Prólogo
The events that led to Texas' independen-ce are still
controversial. We hope that thereader will come to see the Texan
rebellionthrough the eyes of various historical charac-ters.
Although great care was taken to accu-rately portray historical
events and charac-ters, for simplicity's sake, some charactersand
events were omitted. The only fictitiouselements are the dialogues,
Seguín's note toAlmonte and his trip to Goliad. In using
thespelling of Tejas, a clear distinction is beingmade between
historical Tejas and modernday Texas.

15 de diciembre de 1835Ciudad de México
Era muy tarde. Un silencio entró en el PalacioNacional mexicano.
Juan Almonte estaba en elpalacio. Almonte era una persona muy
importanteentre los militares mexicanos. No era general.
Eracoronel. También era el asistente del presidentemexicano.

El Coronel Almonte estaba nervioso porquenecesitaba hablar
urgentemente con el presidente.Tenía información importante para el
presidente:un grupo de norteamericanos había invadido1 SanAntonio y
había tomado2 posesión de El Álamo.San Antonio estaba en Tejas, un
territorio mexica-no. El Álamo era una misión española.
Durantemuchos años los mexicanos habían usado ElÁlamo como base
militar.
Almonte caminaba nerviosamente en el pala-cio. Caminaba con
dificultad. No quería hablarcon el presidente porque no quería ver
personal-mente su reacción. Normalmente, el presidentereaccionaba
violentamente.
El presidente se llamaba Antonio López deSanta Anna y era un
dictador corrupto. Era unapersona irracional y muy cruel. No era un
buenpresidente pero era popular entre los mexicanos.Tenía mucha
experiencia militar. Era valiente ydefendió excepcionalmente varias
veces el territo-rio mexicano.

Al Coronel Almonte no le gustaban las deci-siones de Santa Anna.
Almonte era muy inteligen-te y serio. También era buen soldado
porque erarespetuoso y obediente.
Por fin, él estaba frente a la puerta. Miró lapuerta del
presidente durante muchos segundos.Los segundos eran una eternidad
para Almonte.No quería estar en el palacio y mucho menos,frente al
presidente.
Almonte levantó la mano y tocó suavemente ala puerta. Tocó tres
veces, pero el presidente, SantaAnna, no reaccionó para nada.
Almonte estabamuy nervioso. Otra vez tocó a la puerta y le
gritó:
– ¡Presidente! ¡Presidente!– ¿Qué…qué…qué pasa? –respondió
Santa
Anna.Almonte estaba muy nervioso. No quería
hablar mucho con Santa Anna. Sólo quería infor-mar a Santa Anna
de la situación de Tejas. Entró enel cuarto y le dijo:
– Hay una rebelión en Tejas. Los rebeldesnorteamericanos
entraron en SanAntonio, el pueblo más importante en

Tejas.– ¡Yo sé que San Antonio es el pueblo más
importante! ¿Qué pasó? –exclamó SantaAnna.
– Los rebeldes tomaron posesión de labase militar: El Álamo.
– ¿Tomaron El Álamo? ¡Ellos son piratas! – ¿Piratas? Es un poco
extremo –respondió
Almonte.Otra vez Santa Anna quería explotar. Estaba
furioso. Santa Anna gritó:– ¡Los norteamericanos no respetan
el
territorio mexicano! Tejas es un estado deMéxico. Ellos quieren
simplemente elterritorio. Son ilegales. Y yo voy a elimi-

nar a todos los norteamericanos. A todos.– Su Excelencia, no
todos los rebeldes son
ilegales. Y no todos son norteamericanos.También un grupo de
mexicanos partici-pa en la rebelión –dijo Almonte.
– ¡Ellos son traidores! Si ellos son realmen-te mexicanos, ¿por
qué ayudan a los nor-teamericanos? –exclamó Santa Anna.
Era una conversación intensa. Almonte estabanervioso, porque
Santa Anna reaccionó violenta-mente. Pero no le gustaba la opinión
de SantaAnna. Almonte dijo:
– Ellos defienden sus ideas políticas.– ¡No me importan sus
ideas! ¿Es Juan
Seguín uno de los rebeldes?– Sí. Pero Seguín no quiere causar
proble-
mas… –respondió Almonte.– ¡Seguín es un traidor! Él va a sufrir
las
consecuencias porque ayuda a los piratasnorteamericanos.
Santa Anna estaba furioso. Quería responderrápidamente a la
rebelión. Le dijo a Almonte:
– Describe la situación militar en Tejas.

– Hay dos aspectos: Tejas es enorme y losnorteamericanos son muy
numerosos.
– ¿Cuántos hay?– Hay 30.000 –respondió Almonte.
A Santa Anna no le gustó la información. Elnúmero de
norteamericanos en Tejas no era acep-table. Santa Anna
reaccionó:
– ¿Qué? ¡Imposible! ¿30.000? ¡Son ilega-les! ¡Son piratas!
– Es difícil defender el territorio.– ¿Cuántos mexicanos están
en Tejas? –pre-
guntó Santa Anna.– Hay 3.000.– ¡Piratas! Los norteamericanos
tienen
prácticamente todo Tejas –dijo furiosa-mente Santa Anna.
– ¿Qué plan tiene, Su Excelencia?Santa Anna quería responder
rápidamente a
los norteamericanos. Quería eliminarlos de Tejas. – Vamos a
marchar hacia San Antonio
inmediatamente.– ¿Inmediatamente? No es buena idea. Es
una distancia enorme –respondió

Almonte.– No importa la distancia. Tenemos que
atacar a los norteamericanos.¡Inmediatamente! ¡Quiero un
ataquerápido!
– Pero Su Excelencia…– ¡Prepare las tropas! ¡Vamos a marchar
inmediatamente! ¡Vamos a eliminar atodos los norteamericanos.
Permanen-temente. No quiero a los norteamerica-nos en Tejas.

16 de diciembre de 1835San Antonio, Tejas
La calma entró en San Antonio. Los norteame-ricanos no se
imaginaban que Santa Anna planea-ba atacar. Ellos ocuparon El Álamo
y los mexica-nos de San Antonio regresaron a su vida normal.No
todos los mexicanos regresaron a la normali-dad. Juan Seguín estaba
un poco nervioso, porque

sabía que Santa Anna respondía violentamente alos rebeldes. Y
Seguín era un rebelde.
Seguín era un rebelde mexicano. También eraun líder en la
comunidad. Era de San Antonio. Eracarismático, apasionado y
determinado.Organizaba a un grupo de mexicanos que partici-paban en
la rebelión norteamericana. Seguín serebeló porque no le gustaban
los abusos políticosde Santa Anna. Ayudaba a los
norteamericanosporque ellos también estaban descontentos conSanta
Anna.
Su participación en la rebelión no era muypopular. Muchos
mexicanos lo consideraban aSeguín un traidor porque él combatió
contra losmexicanos. Es por eso que los norteamericanos nole tenían
confianza absoluta a Seguín. Ellos no letenían confianza, porque
Seguín era mexicano.
Hoy Seguín no pensaba mucho en la rebelión,porque hoy era un día
especial. Hoy era la prime-ra noche de las fiestas de diciembre:
las posadas1.Eran una dramatización de María, la madre de

Jesús, y su esposo, José, que buscaban un hotel.Los mexicanos
preparaban las fiestas y Seguín noera excepción. Él estaba frente a
su casa. Tenía unburro para la procesión de las posadas.
Mientraspreparaba la procesión, Seguín vio a su amigonorteamericano
que caminaba por la plaza y legritó:
– ¡Bowie! ¡Amigo!– ¡Hola Seguín! ¿Qué tal? –le respondió
Jim Bowie.Seguín le dio la mano. Bowie era el líder de
los voluntarios norteamericanos en San Antonio.Los
norteamericanos no tenían tropas profesiona-les. Había varios
grupos de voluntarios. Ellos erandesorganizados.
Bowie era un hombre valiente, agresivo y des-honesto. Era famoso
por su cuchillo grande.Sacaba su cuchillo cuando estaba furioso y
poreso, tenía la reputación de ser violento.
Bowie le preguntó:– ¡Hombre! ¿Por qué tienes el burro?– El burro
es para la procesión. Hoy es la
primera noche de las posadas –respondió

Seguín. – ¿Primera noche? ¿Cuántas noches se
celebran?– Nueve.– ¿Qué? ¿Nueve? ¡Los mexicanos celebran
todo el mes de diciembre! –le exclamóBowie sarcásticamente.
Seguín sabía que la cultura mexicana era dife-rente a la cultura
norteamericana. Los mexicanoscelebraban con más entusiasmo y por
muchosdías. Seguín respondió:
– Nosotros, los mexicanos, somos expertosen celebrar fiestas.
Los mexicanos sabe-mos cómo celebrar una fiesta. Los
norte-americanos, no. No saben celebrar unafiesta. Son muy
serios.
– ¡Ja, ja! Los norteamericanos son seriosporque Tejas es
aburrido.
– ¿Aburrido? Aburrido es un burro peque-ño que no va a las
posadas.
Fue un momento cómico. Entonces, Seguín ledijo:
– La fiesta va a ser en mi casa esta noche.

Estás invitado. ¿Quieres celebrar lasposadas?
– ¿Tú invitas a un norteamericano aburri-do? –preguntó
Bowie.
– Claro. Necesitas practicar cómo celebrarcorrectamente.
Necesitas celebrar conlos expertos, los mexicanos –dijo Seguín.
– Acepto. Acepto la invitación. Gracias.– Excelente –le dijo
Seguín.
Bowie quería saber si Seguín era uno de losmexicanos que estaba
ayudando a los soldadosmexicanos. Estaba observando intensamente
todoslos movimientos de Seguín para saber si él decíala verdad o
no. Bowie no confiaba en Seguín.Quería saber si Seguín les
informaba a los solda-dos mexicanos sobre los norteamericanos, así
quele preguntó:
– ¿Sabes que corren rumores?– ¿Rumores? ¿Qué rumores?
–respondió
Seguín.– Hay mexicanos en San Antonio que son
informantes. Ellos informan en secreto alos soldados
mexicanos.

– ¿Quiénes son?Bowie miró severamente a Seguín. Pero
Seguín no le dijo nada. Al fin, Seguín le
respondiósarcásticamente:
– No sé.Los dos hombres se miraban cuando Bowie
sacó su cuchillo grande. Seguín lo observaba ner-viosamente.
Miraba a Bowie y el cuchillo. Pensó:“¿Por qué Bowie es violento?
¿Por qué tiene queusar un cuchillo? No quiero problemas con él.¿Por
qué no confía en mí?”. Seguín continuóobservándolo silenciosamente.
Otra vez Bowie nodijo nada. Violentamente tomó una fruta y la
cortócon el cuchillo. Seguín lo miró y pensó: “Quétonto soy. Bowie
sólo quería cortar una fruta”. Alfinal, Bowie le dijo 'adiós' y
caminó hacia laplaza.
