Sometime this week, USA Today is expected to run an editorial questioning the wisdom of the federal government’s support of homeownership and arguing that public policies that encourage people to own a home should be phased out. The National Association of REALTORS® was given an opportunity to present an opposing viewpoint which included the following points, in a viewpoint column written by N.A.R. President Vicki Cox Golder: • Specific government incentives for home ownership in this country have existed for more than 150 years. That’s because homeownership helps foster communities, creates social stability, builds wealth over the long term, and contributes significantly to the U.S. economy. • One of the great bonds of trust between the federal government and the American people is the equal opportunity to own their own home. • Homeownership is how many American families begin to accumulate wealth. According to the most recent data from the Federal Reserve Board, a homeowner’s net worth is 46 times that of a renter’s. (Median net worth of $234,200 for owners versus $5,100 for renters.) • Who wants to tell the next generation that the American Dream of homeownership is gone? The recent tax credits, along with the dip in home prices have allowed many people for whom homeownership was just a dream, to become homeowners. Much like the tide, sometimes an ebb allows for treasures to be found that would otherwise be unattainable when the tide is high.
