Re-Echoings FALL 2010

Life’s journey takes us through cycles and milestones which weave the fabric of our lives. On Wednesday, June 7, 2010 the St. Hubert Catholic High School Class of 1960 reached one of those milestones. Who would have guessed that these vibrant, beautiful women had graduated fifty years ago? On this day, at Holy Family University, they would don gold gowns and prepare to lead the St. Hubert 69th Graduation Procession. We venture to name some of the emotions felt by these women, pride, honor, loyalty and a sense of gratitude for all the gifts given them over the past years and especially for the Catholic principles they learned

during their high school years. The two hundred and three graduates of 2010 look to these women as mentors and models of faithful Alumnae, proud of their Alma Mater. Eighty four women in this class walked in the graduation procession and on Thursday, June 8, 2010 one hundred seventy five attended their reunion. The entire St. Hubert community thanks them for their dedication, loyalty and generosity with a class gift of $1400, we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize the committee who worked so hard to make it a success.

From the Office of the PresidentDear Alumnae and Friends of St. Hubert,

When you receive this edition of our newsletter, we will be well into our school year, and the season of fall. As you will see from Ms. Craig’s letter, wonderful things are happening at St. Hubert, and I you will share the pride of knowing that your Alma Mater continues its proud tradition of excellence.

You will notice that there are reunions planned for those celebrating special anniversaries and I look forward to meeting many of you at that time. They are always joyous occasions and an opportunity to get reacquainted with old friends. In addition to those reunions, I will be planning a couple of reunions in Florida at the end of February, as well as one in the Baltimore area, and if all goes well, I may even get to California this year.

Another scheduled event that provides an opportunity for classmates to get together would be our annual Communion Breakfast. The details are in this issue. Perhaps you would consider getting a group of friends and having a table for the “Class of…We would love to see you there. Anytime that Bambies get together is a fun time!

As we celebrate this month of the rosary, a very special way of honoring our Lady, may Mary intercede for you and all of your intentions. God bless you.

Sister Mary E. Smith, IHMPresident

PrincipalDear Alumnae and Friends,

It is my privilege and my honor to report all of the happenings in our school for the upcoming year. Your alma mater is doing great! Our freshmen enrollment exceeds projection, many new programs were started, and our sports and activities roles have grown. Overall, we are excited and looking forward to a great year!

Our open technology environment has expanded the classroom in amazing ways. Students access their online textbooks in class, with the benefit of the laptops and netbooks they are permitted to bring to class every day. Virtual tours, online activities and connecting with other schools anywhere are all possibilities now. Through videoconferencing, we join with two universities in courses for college credit, and are helping an elementary school gain high school credit. New programs in theology, social studies, math, science and world languages, as well as online textbooks and online homework programs help us to lead our students forward. Even our guidance program is on line, creating huge advantages for our college bound students. While we are just beginning to learn the process of education in the 21st Century environment, we are certainly jumping in with both feet, and working every day to prepare our students for their bright and unlimited futures.

Our activities and sports programs have expanded as well. This year has seen the beginning of our robotics program, and a resurgence of our golf team. This is only September! Most of our teams and activities rosters are burgeoning, and our students are certainly enjoying the new opportunities. This year, we are learning as we move ahead. Our teachers are working diligently to master all as-pects of our new initiatives, and our students are certainly engaged. We are laying the groundwork for Saint Hubert to thrive in the 21st Century!

Sincerely,

Regina Craig

Initiated in 1992, the St. Hubert Distinguished Graduate Award recognizes an alumna who has remained dedicated to her Alma Mater, serves as an active member of the volunteer supporters and is committed to the success of St. Hubert for generations to come. It is with great pleasure that St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls announces the 2010 Distinguished Graduate, Sister Maureen MacElderry, SSJ, Class of 1977.

Born on July, 19, 1959 in Northeast Philadelphia, Maureen was the only child of Arthur and Julia MacElderry. She attended St. Dominic grade school where she learned to play the trumpet and won her first music award in a solo competition of “I Left My Heart in San Fransisco”. In 1972 Maureen heard the St. Hubert Orchestra for the first time and at that moment she knew that she was called to be a Bambie. During her four years in the orchestra she was section leader, won the music award for four years, and was selected to play in the All-City Band from 1975-1977. When Maureen attended Chestnut Hill College her love affair with the trumpet continued, and she received her BS in Music Education with a Major in trumpet. Later

she received her MA in Humanities with a Fine Arts and Music Concentration from Arcadia University.

In addition to her academic and fine arts education at St. Hubert, Maureen was introduced to the Sisters of St. Joseph and experienced their charism first hand. She entered the community in 1983 and received final profession in 1992. Sister’s professional experience includes elementary school, high school, and college. During her time at Kennedy-Kendrick High School she wrote and had published their school song. From 1999 until 2010 Sister Maureen was Program Coordinator and Scholarship Counselor for The Connelly Foundation and was responsible for the scholarship recipients in the 20 archdiocesan high schools. In this capacity, she had the opportunity to visit her Alma Mater several times a year. At present Sister Maureen serves as an Area Delegate for her religious community.

Please join us on November 21, 2010 as we honor our Bambie of the year. A special invitation to the class of ’77.

Conducting experiments, writing lab reports, handing in monthly reading reports, and studying for those challenging unit tests are all familiar activities to 40 graduating classes of Bambies who experienced science classes with Mrs. Sulik. Fernanda Margraff Sulik joined the SH faculty in September

1970. Fresh from graduating with honors with a science degree from Penn State University, Mrs. Sulik was welcomed to the Science Department by then chair Sister Mary Philip, IHM. Her science roster has included Physical Science, Biology, BSCS (who can forget counting those red and green-eyed drosophilae), and Chemistry. Mrs. Sulik assumed the chairmanship of the Science Department in 1990 and remained in that position until 2010.

Recent Bambies know Hube Tube but more seasoned Bambies will remember Monday Morning Live from the TV studio initiated by Mrs. Sulik and Father Cribben. Mrs. Sulik was already Audio-Visual Director and urged the building of a TV studio in the old gym locker area. The TV studio was made possible with equipment purchased under Act 195.

Technological innovations were just part of Mrs. Sulik’s endeavors at SH. She encouraged the development of new science courses and the updating of the labs, including the establishment of a Physics lab in what was previously the cooking lab. Computers were added to the Chemistry lab and portable computer stations were available for classroom use. In addition to her science duties, Mrs. Sulik took care of orders for materials to be purchased under Act 195 and 90. The faculty could always count on Nan to find funds to help them acquire needed resources.

Mrs. Sulik often stated that her main purpose in education was to encourage her students to think for themselves. She challenged them to be creative but logical and to substantiate their opinions with facts and relevant data. The goal of a scientist is to awaken curiosity and energize change. Well-done Mrs. Sulik—goal accomplished!

The St. Hubert Community wishes you a happy and healthy retirement and thanks you for 40 excellent years of service!

On Thursday July 29, 2010, 18 SH Bambies, their family and friends left from New York City for 9 fabulous days at sea aboard the Caribbean Princess. As we bid good bye to Lady Liberty we set off for a full day at sea before reaching our first port of Bermuda. There were many sightseeing excursions and shopping trips, along with relaxing on the pink sand beaches. That evening we set off for our next ports of San Juan, St. Thomas, and Grand Turk.

While our days were full of more trips and shopping, we all managed to relax by the pool, visit the spas, enjoy the elegant meals, and thoroughly enjoy each other’s company. We took full advantage of what the ship had to offer in entertainment and amenities. We even had a few Bambies that went to every dance class, and made their debut on the video offered by the photo center of our vacation.

We arrived back in New York on Saturday August 7th with souvenirs packed in our suitcases, and many memories of the great time we had. As we boarded our bus to return to St. Hubert we were looking forwardto seeing our photos and planning the next vacation.

Look for information in an upcoming Re-Echoings or on line about our next trip planned for 2011. Hope you can join us.
