I nside this newsletter, I have a LOT of great news about what’s happening in Riviera Bay for 2012. Our new meeting location, our new storage location, our new pizza supplier, our new “First Prize” winning float in the Grand Prix night parade, and area updates along with our other 2012 events, but since this is our annual environmental issue, I want the front page reserved for OUR MOST IMPORTANT EVENT IN 2012: NEXT GENERAL MEETING - THURS, MARCH 15 ST PETE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - 600 83rd Ave. NE (east of 4th St to church at 83rd & Macoma) Speakers from WSI curbside recycling service, Councilman Jim Kennedy, Codes & Sanitation Dept, Public Service Rep, and Coordinating April 14 Cleanup. “OUR CANAL & AREA CLEANUP IS SCHEDULED FOR SAT, APRIL 14, AT 234 SUNLIT COVE DRIVE NE BOAT RAMP STARTING AT 8:30AM TO NOON” “Will try to keep the boat ramp open as much as possible” (east on 89th Ave N off of 4th St N, bear right onto Sunlit Cove Dr NE to boat ramp on right) W e continue to set records each year for most trash collected, most recycled & most volunteers. I know we can top it this year. So please come out to help clean up your neighborhood. Once again, FREE Coffee, Donuts & McMuffins will be supplied around 8:00 am to get everyone off to a great start at 8:30 and lunch will be provided around 12 noon. We need as many volunteers as possible around 7:30 am to help with set-up, check-in, pickup donated food & coffee, pick or get assigned a clean-up area, and break down. We will supply all the bags, gloves, pickers, etc, and all that is needed for a very productive day. We will also have 2 large dumpsters at that location that the neighborhood is welcome to fill after the cleanup. We will be recycling all the glass, plastic and metal, so please leave that material on the side of the dumpster and we’ll take care of that before Mon, April 16 dumpster pickup time. This is also a perfect opportunity to get those high school community service hours needed to graduate. Anyone with a pickup truck or a small boat is encouraged to participate, but you don’t need a boat, canoe, truck, kayak, paddleboat, or even an inner tube to join us, just bring along a desire to help the area become a better and cleaner place for everybody to live. Among other door prize items, we will also be giving away a rain barrel to one lucky volunteer. If you or your company would like to donate anything for this event, please contact me at 727-579-3644 or e-mail [email protected]. I hope to see you all at our March 15th meeting, but if not, that’s just more GREAT Paisano’s pizza for me, Prez Dave

Speaking of recycling, we had 12 people

show up for this cleanup on Feb 25th and we collected 41.2 lbs of trash along 83rd Ave N east of 4th St to the San Martin bridge. Of that 41.2 lbs collected total, we recycled 14.2 lbs of glass, 5.8 lbs of plastic, 2.5 lbs of aluminum, 2.3 lbs of cardboard, and only had to put 16.4 lbs total in the trash bin. See what a difference recycling makes? About a third of everything collected was actual trash! I’d like to thank Lee & Conner Hall, Dave & Donna Hoover, Don Steer, Toni Michalove, Sean, Lizz, Amy & Erin Singh, and Lesley & Joshua Mountain for taking the time out of their busy schedule to help our little slice of paradise become a better place for everybody to live.

I can’t believe we don’t have more residents participating in the WSI

Curbside Recycling program. It only costs $2.75 a month, payable annually. (If you really can’t afford that amount, but would still like to participate, please contact me and I’ll see if we can arrange a neighborhood grant or something.) Throwing Out Is Out! - PLEASE RECYCLE

County is a peninsula, people. Sooner

or later we’re going to have to start paying to have our trash taken somewhere else. I’d prefer it to be much later. Yes, St Pete burns a lot of our trash for energy, but I’ve toured the incinerator and the landfill and there’s also a lot more that can’t/doesn’t get burned. We will have a rep from WSI at our March 15 meeting, along with reps from the Sanitation Dept if you want to ask them any questions before signing up for this service. I’ve been signed up from the start and their service has always been great. They can be reached at 727-572-6800.

Storage at 1159 94th Ave N has also very graciously volunteered to let us use a large storage unit for our supplies. (and another temporary one to benefit our Carefest project, allowing me to have some of my garage and house back.) Third, the very handsome Joseph LoPreste, owner of Paisano’s Pizza ‘n Pasta at 6000 4th St N has very graciously volunteered to provide pizzas for our free pizza socials starting 30 minutes before

every meeting. (and they are tremendously great pizzas too) Fourth. I know I can always count on the eternally lovely Chip Pitts, owner of Babalu’s Restaurant at 9246 4th St N, for delicious food and

gift certificates for our helpers whenever I ask him.

There are also many other companies that help us and we truly couldn’t do it all without them. We also couldn’t put out such a great newsletter without all our advertisers, so please, before you go anywhere else, check them out and tell them where you read about them.

I have some great news I’d like to share with you about how lucky we

all are to have such great neighbors and area businesses that want to help our neighborhood continue to grow and prosper in 2012. There are many others that help throughout the year, but there are four that really stand out that are making a huge difference this year that I’d really like to thank and acknowledge their contributions. Let’s all try to help them grow and prosper along with us. First, the St Pete Presbyterian Church at 600 83rd Ave N has very graciously volunteered to let us use their wonderful hall at the corner of

83rd Ave NE & Macoma Drive NE for the rest of our meetings this year. Please consider checking them out for your worship needs. (Holy Family church on 78th Ave was also great to us and we thank them for last year, but we heard that a lot of people didn’t want to go that far, so hopefully this is a more centralized location and we’ll get more attendees.) Second, the very lovely Suzanne Wieden, manager of Budget Self

Please call me at 579-3644 if you have a child that needs to complete some community service hours at other times of the year, we can always come up with ideas for

help. Whether it’s walking the streets picking up trash in the neighborhood, helping to deliver newsletters or flyers, helping at a neighborhood event, researching the history of the

neighborhood, or even providing help for one of our Christmas candle distributors, we’ll find something for them to do to earn those hours.

GRAND PRIX / FESTIVAL OF STATESILLUMINATED NIGHT PARADE

March 22

Calling All Riviera Bay Youth Groups

Calling all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies, Girl Scouts and other youth

groups. The RBCA is very actively searching for any Riviera Bay youth group that could use $5,000 each quarter for a simple activity in their neighborhood. The only catch is that you’ll have to split it with your neighborhood association so we both would get $2,500. Then, at the end of the year, the neighborhood event of the year and the youth group of the year would win $5,000 apiece as would our youth group. Please contact Prez Dave if interested: 579-3644 / [email protected] newsletter might not get out before then, but we are

entering (and I predict) winning $250 in another parade on March 22nd. In 2010 our decorated boat/float won the top prize of $500. In 2011, our decorated boat/float won the top prize of $250, and I know our 2012 rocketship/float will win the“Best Illuminated” top prize of $250 again. I really want to thank Gary West for coming up with the idea for the unique rocketship/float this year and I’d also really like to thank Toni Michalove for contributing most of the beads we will throw that night, along with everybody else that has dropped off beads at our house, Please feel free to keep dropping them off for future parades at 163 87th Ave N. You can check out our 2012 “ride” at www.rocketshipcar.com

Great news for area homeowners! We are beginning to see signs of

recovery for our local Riviera Bay Community housing market. While doing routine Comparison Market Analysis (CMA’s) for our neighborhood I see increased activity. In the past 90 days 3 Homes have SOLD, 2 of which were on the market less than 60 days. I also see 5 “Pending” and 3 “Active with

Contract” transactions. These 2 categories are pretty similar, both meaning there is a contract between a Buyer and a Seller - but the deal has

not yet closed. Of these 8 homes - 6 were on the market less than 90 days and 3 of them - less than 30 days! Right now there are 5 “Active” listing in the MLS (Multiple Listing Service). All in all, I think we can recognize this recent trend as a definite increase in Buy/Sell activity in our community. Call it Spring Fever - but I like it! Home prices are moving back up and that means our property values will continue to head up also. I live, play, and work as a Realtor here in the Riviera Bay Community so if you have any questions, please call me - Terri Hammer (727) 235-3810 or e-mail me at [email protected].

Keep Tampa Bay

BLUEOur bays and bayous are a part of

St. Petersburg for all to enjoy. By doing our part to minimize our impact, they will remain healthy and productive. Help Keep Our Bays and Waters Clean!• Never dump anything down the storm drains• Sweep up driveways, sidewalks and roads to avoid grass and trash from washing into the canals.• Don’t blow grass or leaves into the street or storm drains• Wash your car on the lawn instead of roads and driveways.• Check your car for leaks and dispose of waste oil properly.• Pick up after your pets and dispose in trash cans.• Use fertilizers and pesticides sparingly.• Do not throw cigarette butts on the ground.

Unfortunately, litter in our waterways and on our beaches lasts a long time, often years. Litter, especially plastics, takes many decades to several hundred years to break down, thereby threatening

wildlife and public health for generations. Consider how long it takes for these items commonly found in our waterways to breakdown:

• Cardboard box, 2 weeks• Orange peel, 2-5 weeks• Banana Peel, 2-5 weeks• Newspaper, 6 weeks• Apple core, 2 months• Wool sock, 1-5 years

• Cigarette filter, 1-5 years• Plastic bag, 10-20 years• Tin can, 50 years• Foam plastic cup, 50 years• Aluminum can, 80-200 years• Disposable diaper, 450 years• Plastic bottle, 450 years• Fishing line, 500 years• Glass, I million years• Rubber tire, infinity
