FOOD ORDERS TO KILIAN CAMPUS

If a pizza or sub craving hits during your long hours

of studying here at Kilian, having food delivered is

no problem. However, please make sure that you

are waiting to pick up & pay for your delivery. The

front desk staff cannot leave the desk unattended to

come and find you when your food arrives, and we

don’t want to turn away the delivery driver!

COFFEE

Coffee is available by the cup to all students, staff

and faculty for a charge of 25 cents per cup. So

that coffee is available to all students, please do not

fill up large travel mugs with the front office cof-

fee. The staff in Student Services makes every ef-

fort to ensure the coffee is hot & fresh, but please

understand when other duties come first.

COPIES, FAXES & LAMINATING

Do you know that the front desk staff can make cop-

ies, send faxes and laminate pages for you?

-Copies = 10 cents per page (copies made front &

back to save paper unless you specify otherwise)

-Faxes = $1.00 for the 1st page & 10 cents for each

additional page (please have your cover sheet ready)

-Laminating = $1.00 per page

Senate Recycle Sale

Faculty Senate would like to become

a more significant part of the col-

lege. To do this, we want to raise

money for faculty development and

possibly other areas at Kilian. Our

first goal is to reinstate the Master

Faculty program, which we have al-

ready earmarked our Recycle Sale

funds to cover. But we need your

help.

We are looking for donations for our

Recycle Sale. The only items we do

not want are clothes and shoes. Oth-

erwise, any clean, working items you

are looking to get rid of we’d love to

sell at our Recycle Sale. Vintage

things, antiques, toys, home décor –

anything you’d find at a rummage

sale we’ll take. Ask your family,

friends, even businesses, to donate

items for our Recycle Sale. We will

price these items to sell; anything left

over will be donated.

The date for our Recycle Sale is

April 24 from 8am-2pm here at Kil-

ian. All donations can be brought to

the front desk or to Room 144 be-

tween Monday, April 12 and Fri-

day, April 16 so that they can be

priced and organized in time for our

Recycle Sale.

first fundraising event!

Kilian Community College

Human Services will be offering a new

day cohort in Chemical Dependency

starting in the Fall. Please see your advisor for further details.

Student Success Center Give Away

Enter the Student Success Center weekly give away. Every week the success cen-

ter will give out prizes such as calculators, staplers, pens, pencils, etc. To enter

students must fill out the form in the SSC and drop it in the container. The draw-

ing will be held on every Tuesday at noon.

- You can only register once a day

- Your name must be on the sign in sheet at the SSC

Library Cards

Students who are not residents of Minnehaha or Lincoln County can be reimbursed

for the expense of obtaining a library card from the Siouxland Public Librar-

ies. Please see Jan in Room 111.

The main branch of Siouxland Libraries will be closed Monday, March 29,

through Thursday, May 6. They will reopen on Friday, May 7, at 12:00

noon. The book drop will be open.

FAMILY CAREGIVER EDUCATION SERIES At the Avera McKennan Educational Center Auditorium - Orthopedic Institute

Each Wednesday night in April the Alzheimer’s Association is hosting a free educational pro-

gram for family caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Wednesday, April 7, 2010 7-8 pm

Dr. Matthew Malone will present a basic medical overview of Alzheimer’s disease, the diag-

nostic process, medications and current research.


Marc Feinstein will address the legal, financial, and medical choices facing family members.


Dr. Mark Vande Braak will discuss grief reactions and emotions of caregivers.


Dr. Matthew Malone, Marc Feinstein, and Dr. Vande Braak will return and join State

Executive Director, Jane Aspaas, RN for a panel discussion on Alzheimer’s disease.

All sessions are free and open to the community. Please pre-register by calling

Kilian Student Leadership Association

The initial phase in the development of a new on-campus student organization is in

it’s final stages. A group of students have been meeting to develop the framework

for what has been named the Kilian Student Leadership Association. The group has

decided upon the following mission and vision statements for the group.

Mission Statement:

―Building Leaders, Kilian and Community‖

Vision Statement:

―The Leadership Team’s vision is to build informed student leaders that can promote

personal, college and community growth.‖

In the upcoming weeks be looking for more information about this exciting new

initiative at Kilian.


FROM THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE

In the rush to register each semester, it’s easy to forget that

you are taking out loans to finance your education. While

student loans are an excellent investment in yourself and your

future, it is still important to stay informed! The following

information comes from Great Lakes Higher Education Cor-

poration.

When do I start student loan repayment? Repayment of

the federal Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidized loan begins

when your grace period expires. This one-time grace period

begins when you drop below a half-time enrollment status

and lasts for six months. The first payment will be due after

the grace period ends. Be aware that for a Stafford Unsubsi-

dized loan, interest continues to accrue during the six-month

grace period. Any unpaid accrued interest is added to your principal balance when the loan en-

ters repayment.

May I make payments on a loan while in school? Yes – if you can, this will reduce your debt

load upon graduation. The less debt you have, the better lifestyle you can afford. The payment

received will first be applied to unsubsidized accrued interest, if any, then to the principal bal-

ance..

Is there a way to find out information such as balance on all of my student loans? Yes – go

to www.nslds.gov – a student access website. This site can be used to make inquiries about your

federal loans, grants, outstanding balances, loan status and disbursements. You simply need

your PIN number to access your information (the one used to sign your FAFSA). Kilian’s Finan-

cial Aid Office would be happy to show you how to access NSLDS.

Can I set up automatic payments? Great idea! Call Great Lakes at (800) 236-4300. They

can mail you the authorization OR assist you with setting this up online. If you wish to make a

payment in addition to your auto-pay, they can help you with that too!

Will I receive reminders about loan balances, repayment terms and repayment op-

tions? No. This information can be found on your Disclosure/Repayment statements that you

should have received. Check NSLDS or call Great Lakes to get your account information.

What if I can’t make my payments? First, it’s important that you do not borrow too much in

the first place. Use caution and always be aware of what you’re borrowing. There are many op-

tions such as graduated repayment, income sensitive repayment and consolidation. Contact

Great Lakes for more information.

COUNSELING SERVICES AT KILIAN

Counseling services from a licensed, professional

counselor are available at no cost to our students. The

counselor is available to assist the student in dealing

with personal or social concerns and academic or vo-

cational issues. The counselor will refer students to

outside agencies when appropriate. All students are

encouraged to use this service. Appointments can be

made by calling 605-221-3121 or by stopping by the

counselor’s office in Room 121. Walk-ins wel-

come! Counseling services are confidential and ad-

here to FERPA guidelines.

What are the consequences if I default on my student loan? When a loan defaults, the

guarantee agency initiates collection activity against you until the loan has been repaid in

full. Failure to repay your loan(s) as promised may result in any or all of the following:

Report of the default to the credit bureau(s) causing adverse credit reports – affects your ability to finance a car, a house, etc.

Report of default to the Internal Revenue Service causing federal tax re-funds to be withheld and applied to the loan balance. This is also true for state tax refunds when applicable.

Involvement of your employer due to garnishment of wages. Accrual of collection costs. Loss of other federal or state payments Loss of eligibility for further federal student aid (including grants!) Loss of eligibility for repayment options such as deferments Denial of professional licenses (in some states) Lawsuit & liability for court & legal expenses.

CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS

If animals had a school and they taught, say running, climbing, flying and swimming – and all

the animals had to take every subject – there might be some problems.

Ducks … are great at swimming but it would be a disaster at running, and practicing would

ruin his webbed feet, which made him so good at swimming in the first place.

Rabbits … would get an ‘A’ in running, but they’d probably drown before they learned how to

swim very well.

A squirrel … would be top of the class in climbing, but only a ‘C’ or ‘D’ student in flying.

Eagles … would be the valedictorian in flying, but would be labeled ‘learning disabled’ in

climbing and swimming.

If John Elway or Joe Montana … were asked to be offensive linemen their team would probably

never win a game.

If every guy on a team was exactly alike, they would have a lousy team. So what do we do?

There is a difference between a team of champions and a championship team. Championship

teams have players who commit to individual peak performance, yet through their celebration

of personal differences, encourage each other to do what they do best to collectively contribute

to the benefit of all. Only when each of us commits to being all we were born to be, can we put

our best foot (or paw) forward to form a championship team.

We are getting a lot of garbage in the blue recycle containers, liq-

uids, paper, gum and other unfit items. Please remind the new

students only plastic and cans that are empty can be put in the

containers. Any containers that are not empty of liquid should be

put in the common trash cans.

Please be certain to access your student e-mail. This is important

as more and more information is being communicated that way

from the various departments here at Kilian.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS...

If you have not already completed your 10-11 FAFSA please do

so now. You may direct any questions to Patti (105) or Erin

(106) in the Financial Aid Office.

ATTENTION GRADUATES

Are you planning to graduate by the end of Summer 2010? If so, please complete an Intent to

Graduate Form with the Registrar’s Office. This will ensure that you receive all of the

graduation ceremony information that you need. Packets will be mailed to graduates

soon! The form can be downloaded at Kilian’s website under Registrar & Forms.

CONGRATULATIONS UPCOMING GRADUATES!

Graduation will be held on Monday, May 24th at 7:00 pm at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux

Falls. All graduates should arrive by 6:00 pm! If you have questions, please see Janet Garcia.

WHAT IS EARTH DAY?

Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970. It is a day dedicated to the environmental

health of our planet. By 1990 Earth Day became an international event with more than 200

million people in 141 countries participating. Fairs, festivals and speakers explore topics such

as pollution, habitat destruction, renewable vs. non-renewable resources and more. World-

wide volunteers pick up litter, clean up streams & reservoirs, restore parks, plant trees and par-

ticipate in many more earth-friendly activities.
