RESIDENT PROFILE

When Chris and Wendy planned to meet their friends in Phoenix they had no intention of buying a house. On the road for the past two years, they were busy volunteering in the state parks from Florida to Califor-nia. Thoroughly enjoying the experience of working with the rangers and campers in a variety of parks, they thought they would try another couple of years, at least until they found the perfect stop for them.

When their friends invited them to visit Festival and said that “...this place just feels right” they were skeptical, at least until they got out of the car. It took only a few weeks before they bought a house and put the RV in storage. That was last June.

It has been over forty years since Chris lived in the valley. He was in flight training at Williams Air Force Base, now closed, and remembered there was just

one stop light to get there. The remarkable growth and development of the area is still amazing to him. He remembers low flights over the desert where there are now high rises and communities. Later, while based in the Philippines, he was the water safety in-structor for the base, teaching swimming and diving.

Chris is California born and raised, and a gradu-ate of Brigham Young University. He has worked in construction, heavy machinery and equipment, and automotive. He spent most of his career with GM in Detroit where he trained technicians through distance learning (TV) and wrote and edited many manuals. He is fully Red Cross certified and teaches rehabilita-tion swimming lessons here at the Festival pool. This is a special course designed for people with joint replacement and neck problems, and the results have been gratifying.

Wendy had a career in education as a classroom teacher, teacher trainer and principal. She would like to meet other UCLA grads (Bruins) in our community. She has focused on children’s literacy and worked for Scholastic as a national literacy consultant. Currently, when she is not editing books, she is elbows deep in clay at the pottery studio or practicing yoga.

And the friends that directed them to Festival? They also bought a house here a few months ago because “...it just feels right.”

Wendy and Chris Cottam

Festival Swimmers Club

The Sun City Festival Swimmers Club had a small contingent of competitive swimmers travel to Chandler, Arizona on February 23 to participate in the Arizona Senior Olympics, a qualifier for the world’s largest National Senior Games. This meet brings out the finest swim-mers from west coast states and snowbirds from all over the United States who are interested in qualifying for the National Senior Games held the following year. Festival Swimmers had four swimmers who gathered 15 medals total. Thomas Jacob (55-59 age) 1 gold, 2 silvers, 1 bronze. John Kelly (65-69, and John’s second swim meet ever) 1 silver, 3 bronze. Coach Don Schaefer (70-74 ) 2 silver, 1 bronze. Phillip Moore (55-59) 4 golds.

Moore, Jacobs and Schaefer all had times presently ranked in the top 50 in the U.S. The outstanding race of the meet was turned in by Phil Moore in the 50 Butterfly where he swam a 19th nationally ranked 27.98 seconds, beating several swimmers seeded higher than himself.

The Festival Swimmers Club is made up of fitness swimmers (the majority), open water, tri-athletes, and competitive swimmers. We welcome and encourage anyone who can already swim four lengths of the Festival pool and are interested in working on stroke technique and fitness improvement to join us. The workouts are tailored to each swimmers ability with emphasis on improved endurance and fitness.

Left to Right Coach Don Schaefer, Thomas Jacob, John Kelly, & Phillip Moore

We are constantly bombarded with information about the best way to exercise. How do we know what is fact and what is fiction? Continue reading and have some of the myths busted.

Muscle Turns Into Fat: Muscle and fat are completely different types of tissue and have totally different functions. One type of tissue cannot turn into another type. When consistent exercise stops, muscle tissue will atrophy (get smaller in size). Calorie burning decreases and fat storage increases causing fat cells to get larger.

Stretch Prior To Exercise: Traditionally, people believed stretching functioned as a warm-up and prevented injuries. Recent research published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine showed stretching prior to exercise did not prevent injury and reduced muscle force output. Stretching is most beneficial, and safest, when done after five to ten minutes of light activity (warm up) AND after exercise is completed.

Lifting Heavy Weights Will Make Women Get Bulky: Women don’t have enough of the muscle-building hormone testosterone to get bulky. Regular strength straining is still very important to maintain age-related strength and muscle loss and to maintain bone density. In addi-tion, strength training helps boost metabolism and improve the hormonal profile.

Calorie Readout On Equipment Is Accurate: Research has shown that calorie burn listed on some exercise equipment can overestimate calorie burn by 40 percent. Treadmills and stationary bikes tend to have more accurate calorie readouts than elliptical machines and other equipment. To get the most accurate reading for a particular machine, enter your age and weight. And, other factors such as gender and fitness level, also play a role in numbers of calories burned.

Abdominal Exercises Reduce Abdominal Fat: This is the myth of spot reduction. This applies not only to the body’s abdominal region but it also applies to every part of the body. The location from which fat is burned cannot be controlled. Stored body fat is burned only by creating a deficit of caloric intake vs. caloric burn.

Many times, fitness information we get seems too good to be true. Other times, information is dated and recent research has refuted previous beliefs. Feel free to stop by the Fitness Office with questions you may have about any fitness information.
