We need mentors for the North Star Reading Program!

CMS Superintendent, Ann Clark, started the North Star Program to implement in all CMS schools to help our third and seventh grade students that are currently reading below grade level. Waddell needs 50 mentors to successfully run this program. Mrs. Glenn and Ms. Booker will be hosting the orientation within the next two weeks. The North Star Reading Program Vision: -Every third and seventh graders below proficiency in reading will be paired with a mentor who is currently employed by CMS or a community partner. -The mentor will provide social, emotional, and academic support in literacy so that students reach proficiency by the end of the year and are prepared to enter 4th grade as college and career ready. The North Star Reading Program Overview: -Lessons plans will be provided to the mentors -We are asking mentors to complete 30 sessions total/one hour per week -Lesson plans are aligned to the 3rd grade Scope and Sequence and 7th grade Common Core Standards -The lessons are simple and easy for mentors -Mentors will use student’s personal book baggies/novels and including writing activities -Mentors can mentor 1 student or a maximum of 3 students - In order to serve as a mentor you must register as a volunteer at https://www.cms.volunteers.com/volunteer For more information or if you are willing to be a mentor, please contact: Ms. Janella Booker – [email protected] Mrs. Valerie Glenn – [email protected] (980) 343-5815
