GRADE SEPARATION STUDY
More tracks are needed for increased train service and separating the railroad from crossing streets increases safety and limits delays from more trains. The Grade Separation Study explores how best to separate the railroad from the streets – considering things like how high the railroad should be raised and which of the six crossings (Whipple, Brewster, Broadway, Maple, Main and Chestnut) should be separated.
Why It’s Important: How grade separations are designed affects which streets continue to cross the tracks, impacts to nearby properties, and how the tracks and transit center look.
We want your input on how these separations are designed.
TRANSIT CENTER DESIGN
When adding more train tracks, we have the opportunity to build a new transit center, expand amenities like bike parking, convenient pick-up and drop-off zones, and create safe connections between the bus depot, Caltrain platforms and Downtown.
Why It’s Important: Great transit center design could support the vitality of Downtown, create a community gathering place, welcome visitors, and improve travel to and from Redwood City.

Transit District The Transit District plans for shopping, jobs and housing with a new transit center for trains and buses. There could be new bicycle and pedestrian connections through Downtown from El Camino Real to Courthouse Square and surrounding neighborhoods.
Why It’s Important: The Transit District could allow for a mix of retail, jobs and housing served by convenient transit. Coordinating the new uses with better transit center design, expanded transit service, and neighborhood connections is critical for expanding Redwood City’s lively Downtown in a green way.
We want your input! These projects CONNECT to the Transit District:
SEQUOIA STATION SHOPPING CENTER
Sequoia Station is an important shopping center next to the transit center and within the District. The property owners are interested in redeveloping the site - keeping the retail while adding new jobs and housing. New open space and better bicycle and pedestrian routes could connect through and around the center to El Camino Real, Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.
Why It’s Important: Redevelopment of the site is critical to improving transit service. It shifts the CVS and Safeway buildings away from the train tracks, making more space for tracks (needed for more train service), and providing space for transit center amenities and making the transit center easier to use.
We want your input on the amount and mix of housing and on desired on-site amenities.
