New Exhibit At VISAC GalleryTe VISAC Gallery in rail is proud to present My In-

ner Child by quirky bre artist Kim OBrien. Based inNelson, Kim is becoming well known or her imaginativeand antastical elt wool creations and the VISAC Galleryis excited to host her rst solo exhibition in rail.

Over the past year, I have loved making objects thatbrought me in touch with my earliest childhood experi-ences. I work with elted wool or the joy o its textureand the endless possibilities the medium presents and I

use vintage material because it connects me to the pastand to all the bygone stories that lie in the various scrapso abric or accessories. By weaving my experiences intothe past lives o others, past and present come together, and I adore the new meanings that are created. Showingthe audience the wonder and imagination that comes withsel-indulgent craing, I hope to encourage others intocreating beautiul and creative tributes to their own in-ner child.

Artist reception is Saturday, January 21 from 12 pmto 3 pm. Te VISAC Gallery is located at 1501 Cedar

Avenue in downtown rail. For more information, call250-364-0234.

Te Usui System Of ReikiIn Japanese Reiki means universal lie energy.

In the 1800s Mikao Usui, a Japanese healer, wanted tofnd an eective, natural way o healing that did not de-plete the body o the healer. He was studying at a Buddhistemple on Mount Kurama, in Japan when he discoveredhe means o channeling Reiki energy.

At frst he used Reiki on himsel and amily; then de-veloped a means o introducing the method to others. AReiki practitioner receives a series o atunements to assistn the channeling o Universal Lie Energy.

Te Usui System o Reiki continues to be taught by Reikiasters who are trained in the original traditions o Reiki

nd whose proessional and personal lives are committed

not only to this healing art but the liestyle which it en-genders.

Reiki is a non-invasive treatment where the client liesully clothed on a massage table and the practitioner placeshis/her hands on or over certain areas o the body to openthe ow o energy. Reiki goes wherever its needed and ad-dresses body, mind and spirit. It accelerates the bodys abil-ity to heal physical ailments and opens the mind and spiritto causes o disease and pain. It helps one take responsibil-ity or ones lie and experience the joy o balanced well-ness.

Reiki Principles: Just or today, do not worry. Just or to-day, do not anger. Earn your living honestly. Honour yourparents, teachers and elders. Show gratitude, to every liv-ing thing.

Selkirk College Recycling ProgramSelkirk Colleges Recycling Department is celebrating

20 years o making the college a greener place to work.

Established in 1991, the Recycling Department is run bythe Kootenay Society or Community Living, a regionalorganization that provides support services or a range opeople in communities throughout the Kootenays.

When the department was frst established at the CastlegarCampus it employed three people, and since there was no re-cycling depot nearby, all the recyclables had to be trucked to

Nelson every week, notes program coordinator, Liz Sali whohas worked in the recycling program or eight years now.

Te department has grown signifcantly since its hum-ble beginnings. It now employs 13 people and sisthrough more than our times the volume o materials as

it did initially. Now we recycle paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and tin, says Sali. Very little goes to waste here.We take a lot o pride in that, she added, pointing to thetiny trash can o waste amongst a sea o recyclables.

Sali and the sta also recycle batteries, participate inthe on-side composting program, collect paper clips andstamps or the SPCA as well as do all the shredding or thecollege. An interesting act Sali notes is that some o thepaper shredded at Selkirk College is used in the makingo caskets or Doukhobor unerals. Sali puts in ten hoursa week at the departments acility in the Lower Bonning-

ton area o the Castlegar campus, where about six peoplework at any given time most o whom have been withthe department or many years.
