Puerto EscondidoOaxaca, Mexico
Joe Belamarich
• Surf is seasonal in Puerto Escondido:Waves range from small to medium in size from November – April (dry
season)Small to large beginning in early May (rainy season).
• The seasonal change occurs over the period of one week. This drastic change in weather brings an increase in waves size with it.
• The change in weather also brings in strong offshore winds that can create waves ideal for competitive surfing.
• Due to the strong offshore winds that come in during the rainy season, waves break closer to the shore.
• It is advised that only experienced surfers ride these large and powerful waves.
Waves are typically steep barreling waves with a SSW swell.
Puerto Escondido Water TempWater temperatures are at there highest during the first week of August reaching temps in the range of 84 – 86°F
Temps are the lowest during mid January ranging from 79 – 82°F.
Since the waters off Puerto Escondido are warm year round, a rash vest and board shorts should be more than enough clothing for riders.
• The temp of the water closer to shore can vary from the average of the open waters.
• This is contributed to heavy rains or long periods of strong offshore winds.
• The offshore winds bring colder deep waters to the surface replacing the warmer waters.
Puerto Escondido Sea Floor
• Puerto Escondido has a steep sea floor• If you travel out only 100 feet from shore, you
would be about 100 feet from the sea floor• There is no continental shelf off the shore and
no land mass to interfere with a swell• Waves retain 100% of their power until they
reach the shore
