During December 2018, total exports fell by 18.4 percent compared to the November 2018 revised value of P6, 231.6 million. The major contributor to the decline in exports value was the Diamond group, which recorded a decrease of P972.7 million (17.4 percent) from the revised value of P5, 596.6 million in November 2018 to P4, 623.9 million in December. The major destinations at regional level for Botswana exports were Asia, the European Union (EU) and SACU with a share of 53.3 percent, 32.3 percent and 9.8 percent respectively, during the period under review.

Crime Statistics Report 2016

The results show that there were 7,594 decided cases in 2016, compared to 7,188 cases observed in 2015, a 5.6 percent increase. The highest proportion (9.1 percent) of cases was decided in June in 2016, and the least number of cases of 4.9 percent was disposed in January. The data shows that there were some missing information regarding the date of disposal or closing of the case, this is revealed by the high percentage of the “Not stated” of 12.9 percent.

The 2015 IMTS report shows that imports were valued at P73, 149.8 million, having increased by 1.1 percent from 0the value of P72, 425.9 million during the previous year. Exports were valued at P63, 484.2 million compared to P76, 260.7 million in 2014, giving a decrease of 16.8 percent. The top four commodity import groups were Diamonds at 34.5 percent, Machinery & Electrical Equipment at 12.6 percent, Fuel at 12.5 percent and Food, Beverages & Tobacco at 9.6 percent. The Top two export groups were Diamonds at 83.1 percent and Copper/Nickel at 6.0 percent.

Annual CPI Stats Brief 2017

The average inflation rate was 3.3 percent in 2017 as opposed to 2.8 percent realized in 2016. This implies that consumers paid on average 3.3 percent more for the goods and services in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket in 2017 compared to 2016 (2.8 percent). The rise in the average annual inflation rate of 3.3 per cent between 2016 and 2017 was mainly reflected in Transport (from -2.7 to 1.6 percent) and Food & Non-alcoholic Beverages (from 2.7 to 3.4 percent) which account for 20.65 and 16.51 percent respectively of the overall CPI basket.

Botswana Agricultural Census Report 2015

Since 2015 was declared a drought year, the results of the 2015 agricultural census depict contrasting trends between livestock and crop production. Comparison between the 2004 Agriculture Census with the 2015 Agricultural Census figures reveal that livestock production showed a decline, while arable production showed a marked improvement in the production of the three main crops i.e. sorghum, beans/pulses and sunflower. Cattle population dropped from 2.2 million in 2004 to 1.7 million in 2015, goats’ population dropped from 1.6 million to 1.2 million. Sheep population slightly decreased from 243,902 to 242,432.

There were 49,984 registered births that occurred in 2016. The sex ratio at birth is fluctuating between the years, but it still shows that there are more boys than girls at birth throughout the years. On the other hand, the nuptial births have increased from 21.8 to 28.3 between 2015 and 2016. This means that an increasing percent of children are born in wedlock.

The lowest mean monthly minimum temperature recorded during the 2016/17 meteorological year was 1.3oC for Werda in July 2016 and highest mean monthly maximum temperature was 38.5oC for Shakawe in October 2016. The lowest temperature recorded during the 2016/17 meteorological year was -7.98oC for Werda, on the 26th of July 2016 and the highest temperature recorded was 44.2oC for Tsabong on the 29th of October 2016.

Actual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2015 and 2016 reached P146, 065.8 and P170, 588.9 million respectively. This represents an annual increase of 16.4 percent in nominal terms between the two periods. During 2016, Mining and quarrying remained the major contributor to GDP by 20.6 percent followed by Trade, Hotels & Restaurants, General Government and Finance and Business services by 18.2, 14.0 and 13.7 percent respectively.

The number of licensed vehicles in Botswana increased by 5.5 percent from 500,316 vehicles in 2016 to 527,901 vehicles in 2017. National vehicle stock increased at an annual rate of 9.7 percent from 2008 to 2017. Most of these vehicles were passenger cars (62.2 percent).

In Telecommunications, a snap view of the results shows that internet subscriptions rose by 9.0 percent in 2017, registering a total of 1,581,855 in 2017 from 1,451,107 subscriptions recorded in 2016. The BDS 2017 data shows that there has been little or no shift in the population age structure, there was little decrease (from 12% to 11.65%) in the age group 0-4 while age group 5-9 increased from 20% to 23%. Furthermore, the BDS2017 data shows that there were further decreases in the population of working ages while the over 65 population increased slightly from 5% to 5.4%.

Trucks followed passenger cars with 5.1 percent, while motor cycles contributed the least with 0.1 percent.

In Q2 2018, aircraft traffic increased by 41.9 percent after registering 22,273 aircraft movements from 15,696 movements recorded in Q1 2018. Non-scheduled aircraft movements increased by 56.1 percent, private movements increased by 71.3 percent while scheduled aircraft movements declined by 3.3 percent. Maun airport dominated in aircraft traffic, with 62.1 percent of the total. Sir Seretse Khama International airport and Kasane followed with 17.2 and 17.0 percent respectively.

This brief shows that the number of work permit holders has decreased by 0.5 percent between December 2017 and March 2018, from 5,766 to 5,736. Most permit holders were recorded in the agricultural sector at 31.5 percent followed by the construction sector with 12.7 percent. The largest group of work permit holders was issued to the age group 35 – 39 with 18.9 percent followed by ages 40- 44 and 45-49 at 18.5 and 16.5 percent respectively.

Formal Sector Employment Survey Stats Brief Quarter 4 December 2017

In December 2017, a total of 11,280 (2.7 percent) employees were non-citizens. Out of this total, Private and Parastatal sectors recorded 10,163 employees. Construction industry was the major employer of non-citizens (22.8 percent), followed by Education industry (17.3 percent) and Manufacturing industry (16.1 percent). See tables 1 and 2. The brief shows that overall, formal employment increased by 0.1 percent between March 2018 and December 2017 with Private and Parastatals recording the highest increase of 0.2 percent each, followed by Central Government with 0.1 percent, while Local Government encountered a decrease in employment of 0.2 percent. The decrease in Local Government was mainly prompted by the decrease in employment of the Ipelegeng Programmed, recording a decrease of 0.3 percent.

The brief shows that overall, formal sector employment increased by 0.6 percent between March 2018 and June 2018 with Central Government recording the highest increase of 1.6 percent, followed by Parastatal and Local Government with 0.4 percent each. The increase in Local Government was mainly prompted by the increase in employment of the Ipelegeng Programme, recording an increase of 0.5 percent.

The annual inflation rate in December 2017 was 3.2 percent, registering an increase of 0.3 of a percentage point on the November 2017 rate of 2.9 percent. The inflation rates for regions between November and December 2017 indicated that Cities & Towns increased to 3.6 percent from 3.1 percent, Urban Villages’ went up to 2.9 percent from 2.6 percent and Rural Villages’ rose to 3.1 percent from 3.0 percent between the two months.

Consumer Price Index January 2018- December 2018

Periodicity: Monthly

The annual average inflation rate of 3.2 percent recorded in 2018 was within the inflation target range of 3–6 percent set out by the Bank of Botswana. On average, the All Items Index which is conventionally referred to as Cost of Living Index or Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 98.6 in 2018, an increase of 3.2 percent on the 2017 average index of 95.5.

The Index of Electricity Generation (IEG) stood at 195.0 during the Second Quarter of 2018, giving an increase of 21.4 percent year-on-year change from the index of 160.6 during the same quarter of the previous. Comparison of the first two quarters of 2018 shows an increase of 20.1 percent quarter on quarter change from the index of 162.3 recorded during the first quarter of 2018 to 195.0 during the second quarter of the same year.

International Merchandise Trade Statistics Monthly Digest January 2018- December 2018

Periodicity: Monthly

In 2018 Imports were valued at P64, 279.4 million, having increased by 16.6 percent from the value of P55, 121.4 million recorded during the previous year. During the same period, Exports were valued at P67, 191.6 million compared to P61, 226 million in 2017, showing an increase of 9.7 percent. The top four import commodity groups were Diamonds at 28.2 percent, Fuel at 13.2 percent, Machinery & Electrical Equipment at 13.1 percent and Food, Beverages & Tobacco at 12.3 percent. The Top two export groups were Diamonds at 89.9 percent and Machinery & Electrical Equipment at 6.0 percent. Most of Machinery & Electrical Equipment are re-exports.

Indices of the Physical Volume of Mining Production First Quarter 2018 Stats Brief

The Index of Mining Production stood at 86.9 during the first quarter of 2018 showing a year-on-year increase of 12.6 percent from 77.1 during the first quarter of 2017. The main contributor to the 12.6 percent increase were Diamonds contributing 11.2 percentage points, followed by Gold and Soda Ash contributing 0.6 and 0.5 of a percentage point respectively.
