During December 2018, total exports fell by 18.4 percent compared to the November 2018 revised value of P6, 231.6 million. The major contributor to the decline in exports value was the Diamond group, which recorded a decrease of P972.7 million (17.4 percent) from the revised value of P5, 596.6 million in November 2018 to P4, 623.9 million in December. The major destinations at regional level for Botswana exports were Asia, the European Union (EU) and SACU with a share of 53.3 percent, 32.3 percent and 9.8 percent respectively, during the period under review.

The results show that there were 7,594 decided cases in 2016, compared to 7,188 cases observed in 2015, a 5.6 percent increase. The highest proportion (9.1 percent) of cases was decided in June in 2016, and the least number of cases of 4.9 percent was disposed in January. The data shows that there were some missing information regarding the date of disposal or closing of the case, this is revealed by the high percentage of the “Not stated” of 12.9 percent.

The 2015 IMTS report shows that imports were valued at P73, 149.8 million, having increased by 1.1 percent from 0the value of P72, 425.9 million during the previous year. Exports were valued at P63, 484.2 million compared to P76, 260.7 million in 2014, giving a decrease of 16.8 percent. The top four commodity import groups were Diamonds at 34.5 percent, Machinery & Electrical Equipment at 12.6 percent, Fuel at 12.5 percent and Food, Beverages & Tobacco at 9.6 percent. The Top two export groups were Diamonds at 83.1 percent and Copper/Nickel at 6.0 percent.

The average inflation rate was 3.3 percent in 2017 as opposed to 2.8 percent realized in 2016. This implies that consumers paid on average 3.3 percent more for the goods and services in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket in 2017 compared to 2016 (2.8 percent). The rise in the average annual inflation rate of 3.3 per cent between 2016 and 2017 was mainly reflected in Transport (from -2.7 to 1.6 percent) and Food & Non-alcoholic Beverages (from 2.7 to 3.4 percent) which account for 20.65 and 16.51 percent respectively of the overall CPI basket.

Botswana Agricultural Census Report 2015

Since 2015 was declared a drought year, the results of the 2015 agricultural census depict contrasting trends between livestock and crop production. Comparison between the 2004 Agriculture Census with the 2015 Agricultural Census figures reveal that livestock production showed a decline, while arable production showed a marked improvement in the production of the three main crops i.e. sorghum, beans/pulses and sunflower. Cattle population dropped from 2.2 million in 2004 to 1.7 million in 2015, goats’ population dropped from 1.6 million to 1.2 million. Sheep population slightly decreased from 243,902 to 242,432.

There were 49,984 registered births that occurred in 2016. The sex ratio at birth is fluctuating between the years, but it still shows that there are more boys than girls at birth throughout the years. On the other hand, the nuptial births have increased from 21.8 to 28.3 between 2015 and 2016. This means that an increasing percent of children are born in wedlock.

The BDS 2017 data shows that there has been little or no shift in the population age structure, there was little decrease (from 12% to 11.65%) in the age group 0-4 while age group 5-9 increased from 20% to 23%. Furthermore, the BDS2017 data shows that there were further decreases in the population of working ages while the over 65 population increased slightly from 5% to 5.4%.

The annual inflation rate in December 2017 was 3.2 percent, registering an increase of 0.3 of a percentage point on the November 2017 rate of 2.9 percent. The inflation rates for regions between November and December 2017 indicated that Cities & Towns increased to 3.6 percent from 3.1 percent, Urban Villages’ went up to 2.9 percent from 2.6 percent and Rural Villages’ rose to 3.1 percent from 3.0 percent between the two months.

The annual average inflation rate of 3.2 percent recorded in 2018 was within the inflation target range of 3–6 percent set out by the Bank of Botswana. On average, the All Items Index which is conventionally referred to as Cost of Living Index or Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 98.6 in 2018, an increase of 3.2 percent on the 2017 average index of 95.5.

In telecommunications, a total of 1,658,784 internet subscriptions were recorded in Q2 2018; showing an increase of 5.4 percent from 1,574,059 subscriptions registered in the previous quarter. Out of this total, 1,605,727 were mobile internet subscriptions while 53,057 were fixed internet subscriptions.
