Psychology Chester Zoo Trip
April 2018
GCSE and A Level pupils went to Chester
Zoo as part of the Psychology course to
investigate animal behaviour. The day
involved pupils conducting their own
structured observational research into
the different species specific behaviour.
The Psychology course involves
understanding the differences between
animal and human communication,
attachment behaviour across species
and aggressive behaviour across species.
Alongside following their independent
projects for the day, all students
participated in a Primate behaviour
workshop run by the education team at
the zoo. This explored the different facial
expressions and sounds apes use for
different purposes and understanding
the social hierarchy within the
chimpanzee enclosure.
A very interesting day while making lots
of links to knowledge required for the
summer examinations.

The new GCSE in Food involves 50% non-examination
assessment. Students were given a choice of two
tasks: a Young Chef competition or a children’s menu
for a garden centre. Students had to research and
practice a series of dishes and then in March they
had their practical food examination. In three timed
half hour sessions, students had to prepare, cook and
serve two identical portions of three dishes with
accompaniments. Everyone chose different dishes
and many students jointed chickens and filleted fish,
others created trimmed lamb dishes. Soups, bread
rolls, cheese straws, savoury rice were some of the
accompaniment dishes. Desserts presented were
panna cotta, chocolate mousse, Eton mess and
crème Brule. The students found the experience
“stressful but fun….. I’m glad it’s over…..I’m pleased I
did well.” Many staff came to help taste test the
dishes and were “blown away” by the standard.
Mrs Hall was delighted by all the hard work and
effort shown by the students involved.

Alicia Davis (Year 11) will shortly be taking her ARSM cornet
diploma exam. She is the first Rishworth pupil to venture
beyond Grade 8 (in which she received a Distinction) to take
this newly-accredited qualification. On Wednesday, 7th
March she performed her pieces in front of friends, family
and teachers in a trial-run. The audience were blown away
with her 30-minute recital of the complete Flor Peeters
Trumpet Sonata and Denis Wright’s Concert Concerto. We
wish Alicia all the best for her exam. Mr. Lewis
On 13th March Peter Stobart, Katie Gloag, Rhys Hunt and
Isobel Crowe competed for Rishworth School in the regional
UK Mathematics Team Challenge.
Bradford Grammar School was the venue, and the pupils
were competing against 29 other teams from Yorkshire and
beyond. The competition challenges the pupils’ problem
solving skills and independent thought and combines this
with teamwork and of course some rigorous Mathematics!
The pupils battled through four gruelling rounds; the team
round, the cross-clue, the shuttle and finally the relay round.
At the half way stage the team were in contention, however
after strong performances from other teams in the
afternoon session, Rishworth came a very creditable 13th.
An enjoyable day was had by pupils and staff alike, and the
four students were a real credit to the school.
Bring on next year’s competition!

We made the trip to Birkdale School’s sports
facilities after school, full of excitement and a
nervousness that was difficult to explain. The
drive this time was uneventful, then having
dumped our bags in the changing rooms, we
got to work in our groups upon arrival;
brainstorming ideas for our lessons and
becoming acquainted with the Birkdale
students. Icebreaker events followed which
gave us time to mingle with them and have a
bit of fun. A hunt for dark chocolate on a plate
caked with flour ensued and many laughs and
generally a big mess was the end result. To cap
the night off, an assortment of cakes and hot
chocolate was offered [TASTY!].
The night proved to be a tough one for some
with the hard floors and freezing cold rooms
not helpful in the slightest. As a group teaching
at Bungamati School, we came up with
interesting ideas for which we thought the
children there would enjoy in subjects ranging
from art and craft to some in-depth biology.
Before we knew it, it was time for the walk. The
weather had taken a turn for the worse and a
lot of snow covered the hills surrounding
Sheffield. As we trekked, many snowballs were
thrown, much to the delight and dismay of the
people there. The walk was completed at a
frenetic pace and in just three hours we were
done and dusted and more than ready to make
the trip back to Rishworth.
After the training, the Rishworth group were all
eager to embrace the culture and custom that
Nepal has to offer.

The Junior Music Festival took place on 7th March, with a good
number of entrants from the four teams. Our adjudicator, Stuart
Gray, Head of Instrumental Music at Egglescliffe School, was very
impressed by the overall standard and the confidence of the
musicians on stage. The following soloists were selected to take
part in the evening ‘Young Musician of the Year’ concert at
Heathfield on the Thursday evening: Eve Walton (piano), Tamzin
Holmes (guitar), Alexandra Harrison (violin), George Ayres
(trombone), Gabe Fraser (drum kit) and Grace White (voice). Each
upped their game substantially in front of a packed house, but the
end, Alexandra Harrison was declared the winner for her dramatic
performance of Czardas, by Vittorio Monti.
The Intermediate and Senior Festivals took place at the end of the
week and the participants were adjudicated by freelance
percussionist Elsa Bradley. The standard was incredibly high, but
each musician left the stage having received some extremely
positive and constructive feedback. The Intermediate class
winners were: Will Orange (piano), Poppy Eccles (guitar), Peter
Stobart (saxophone), Joe Brooke (drum kit), Xiana Harron (violin)
and Georgie Westwood (voice). The Senior finalists were: Beth
Slim (flute), Alicia Davis (cornet), Alexander Gloag (piano), Harry
Stobart (drum kit), Abbie Chapman (voice) and Dominic Friedrich
(guitar). Music during the adjudicator’s deliberations was
provided by Georgie Westwood and Elisabeth Walker, as well as
Mr Brown’s impressive Funk Band. Miss Bradley found the choice
of winner incredibly difficult for the Intermediate class, and in the
end broke with tradition and awarded joint first place to Xiana
Harron for her spellbinding performance of Copland’s Rodeo, and
Georgie Westwood for her sublime interpretation of With You,
from the musical ‘Ghost’. The Senior winner was Alicia Davis, who
dazzled the audience with her warm tone and impressive
technique in her rendition of the first movement of Denis Wright’s
Cornet Concerto.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in the festival. Elsa
Bradley made the following comment: ‘It's obvious just how much
they enjoy music -- and I was genuinely blown away by many of
their performances. They've very much inspired me!’ Thank you
also to our three magnificent accompanists – Ruth Burbidge, Paul
Brown and Daniel Bath.

Centurion Racing from Rishworth School are officially the fastest F1 in Schools Team in Britain. Over the course of
two years, the six-strong team consisting of Laurence Vines, Dominic Friedrich, Lara Quinn-Beaumont,
Max Pendlebury, Erica Essel and Grant Torrington, have twice reached the National Finals stage of the exciting
tournament, this year recording their most successful season yet. F1 in Schools tasks young engineers and
entrepreneurs with designing a miniature F1 racing car to race a 20 metre drag strip. They have to gain sponsors in
order to fund their entry, and create a “brand identity” in order to compete on a regional, national and international
stage. Centurion Racing achieved second place at the 2018 Yorkshire and Humberside regional finals and went
through to compete at the Nationals, held annually at Silverstone. Over two days the team were judged on their
entry and recorded an unbeatable race time of 1.228 seconds! The final results overall showed that Centurion Racing
finished 4th in the United Kingdom. They have done Yorkshire proud!
