T he most famous gold real estate jacket in the world is turning pink.

For the month of October, Century 21 agents across Australia and New Zealand will wear limited edition pink jackets, scarves and ties for the Cancer Council’s ‘Pink Ribbon’ campaign.

Century 21 Penrith’s Graeme Renshaw is a cancer survivor himself, and said it’s a great opportunity to assist the organi-sation that helped him through.

“I’m a survivor of prostate cancer, and once I saw the opportunity to assist the Cancer Council, I thought, ‘Why wouldn’t I?’,” he said.

“They gave me an 89 per cent chance of survival over fi ve years and I’m taking it!”

Chairman and Owner of Century 21 Australasia, Charles Tarbey, said they wanted to play a part in raising awareness and funds for a campaign to support Australian women.

“Sadly, every day in Australia around 50 women are told they have a breast or gynaecological cancer,” he said.

“Our network’s eff orts last year garnered global attention and I was extremely proud of the way our people rallied behind the cause in their local communities.

“This year we even have an agent who has changed the colour of his car to pink. It will be excit-ing to see what other initiatives are planned.”

Last year, Century 21 real estate agents raised an incredible

$138,770 and hope to beat that result this year.

To do so, they will be taking donation boxes to auctions and open homes, displaying pink merchandise in their offi ces and hosting various fundraising events in their local communities.

There will also be state-based events, including golf days, auctions and ‘Pink’ awards dinners, and many offi ces will donate money from real estate transactions.

Cancer Council Australia CEO, Catherine Sullivan, thanked Century 21 for their ongoing support.

“It’s fantastic to have the world’s largest real estate sales organisa-tion supporting the Cancer Coun-cil in such a unique and visible way,” she said.

both for seniors and the Budget bottom line, Treasurer Scott Morrison has expressed his continued support for a plan to unlock the capital in the homes of older Australians.

The Property Council of Australia said it was very encouraging that the Treasurer had taken such a keen interest in this policy proposal, which would be a boost to seniors’ living standards and to the national economy.

“With an ageing population, under the right settings, we can unlock the capital of older Australians and create a new market for senior’s services and housing in Australia,” Mr Morrison told the Australian Financial Review in a recent interview.

construction was holding steady for the year ending February 2015 to support supply with previous strong increases having eased off at the beginning of this year.

The latest ABS Housing Finance data shows the value of finance for construction of new housing fell marginally by 0.2 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms for the month of February 2015, however there was a 13 per cent increase over the year.

The value of housing finance for the purchase of new dwell-ings increased by 5.6 per cent in February 2015, but dropped 0.3 per cent for the year.

“New housing finance is still creating a reasonable supply pipeline for Australians and seems set to continue to underpin building commence-ments at elevated levels,” said Executive Director Residential, Nick Proud.

Mr Proud said this was particularly good news.

Bits&Pieces Planning Minister Rob Stokes

has welcomed Australian Bureau of Statistics fi gures showing more record-breaking numbers for housing approvals. Nearly 62,865 homes were given the green light in the 12 months to August. This is an increase of 19 per cent on the corresponding period last year. “Today’s fi gures show the continuing strength of the NSW economy, and that we are serious about increasing housing supply,” Mr Stokes said. “The NSW Government is working hard to help homebuy-ers break into the market by unlocking land. Last week, we announced a major land release in the Macarthur region, the fi rst major land release in Greater Sydney for a decade. By increas-ing housing supply, the NSW Government can put downward pressure on home prices and off er homebuyers more choice.”

The Property Council of Australia has described news that Urban Growth NSW has purchased The Store building as

a “Game Changer” for Newcas-tle’s West End. NSW Regional Director, Andrew Fletcher, said the iconic site’s strategic location gave it a special place in revitali-sation of the city centre.

Councillors have deferred a decision to award a landscaping company in Seven Hills a tender to construct a sports fi eld and infrastructure at Glenmore Park Sportsfi eld. The second stage of construction was to be awarded to Landscape Solutions Pty Ltd for almost $1.3 million, but Coun-cillor Bernard Bratusa (pictured)

disagreed. Councillor Marcus Cornish seconded Cr Bratusa’s suggestion to defer the report, and said he wanted it to come back to a briefi ng. “We should be supporting local businesses instead of those outside [the city],” he said. Two Penrith busi-nesses, Josa Constructions Pty Ltd and JK Williams Contracting Pty Ltd submitted tenders, but were unsuccessful. Councillors will now discuss further who should be awarded the tender.

Mr Chisholm said you need to think of the message that the front of your house gives.

Is the gate open? If so, maybe your front door will be too. Show

any intruders that you’re serious about your security. If you’re not using a gate, close it. Even better, lock it. Do the same with your fl y screen and your front door and do it consistently.

He says you should trim trees and bushes in your front garden so (if possible) your front door is visible to your neighbours.

Has your dog left you a

nasty surprise? It’s never a pretty sight on your carpet. First, you need to make sure you clean up the bulk of the poop. Flush it down the toilet or throw it in the bin.

Stain remover: Specific products are on the market, but a laundry stain remover will do the job. Spray the general area with the stain remover, making sure you cover the whole stain and surrounding area.

Cold water: Get a bucket of cold, soapy water and a plain coloured cloth and get to work on removing the stain. Don’t scrub too hard, but scrub with a fair bit of elbow grease.

Vacuum: Get some cheap carpet deodoriser, leave it on the general area for a few minutes and then give the area a good vacuum.

Is it the right time for a brand new bathroom?

T he best time to renovate is any time you are ready! Do your research and some ground work fi rst.

Start with the Internet. There are many online articles and even some apps that can help you with the design or layout you are look-ing for.

Of course there are magazines and don’t forget those TV shows.

Once you have a basic idea then do some ground work. Go into your local bathroom showroom, even the Reece store to get some more ideas and a feel of what you are looking for.

Put your ideas on paper, take photos and keep a diary of what you like and what you dislike.

Then with all that information it’s time to call in your local bath-room renovator (unless you wish to do it yourself).

A local renovator should also point out the fi ner details of your

design and desire. At the same time they should have some tech-nical knowledge to advise if what you want is practical and of course within your budget.

As with all projects get as much

information on what you are wanting with your renovation. This will not only make the project go smoothly but will give a good understanding of the trades you are dealing with.

Making something old new again!

S o much of what we buy these days is mass-produced and quite often doesn’t last the test of

time. So, we think it’s worth look-ing at an older piece of furniture to consider restoring or re-purposing it for something new.

With the popularity of retro and industrial style interior decor, and the appeal of owning something unique, traditional skills such as decorative painting, restoration, French polishing, carpentry, and upholstery are not lost.

It may be an old pine chest of drawers that could look fabulous in a bright colour with funky new handles.

That old chair in your garage may become a feature when cleaned up and treated with a bit of love and care. Or perhaps that table lying on the side of the road could be re-purposed for a new use altogether.

The key is to see the potential in making something old new again.

What you will need• An old piece for furniture• One fi ne to medium sanding

block• 500ml of New Look Primer,

Sealer and Undercoat• 1 litre of New Look Acrylic

Gloss Trim in your chosen colour

• One 50mm wall brush or mini roller kit

How to1. Once you have chosen the

piece of furniture for your makeover, sand the piece back with medium to fi ne sandpaper, ensuring that any old paint or varnish has been removed. Remove all sanding dust with a damp cloth.

2. Paint one coat of white undercoat onto the piece. This prepares the surface for a painted fi nish.

3. Choose a bright colour from the ‘Vitality’ trend range. Here we have used ‘Pineap-ple Punch’. Apply two coats of paint, leaving to dry for at least 12 hours between coats.
