DrivetrainThe drivetrain is a category of components made up of the chain, cranks, cassette or freewheel and pedals. These components work together to drive your Islabike forward. These are crucial in maintaining the optimum performance and life of your Islabike. To keep these running smoothly we advise the following.

1. Chain cleaning and lubricating - We recommend oiling periodically or after excessive use. Your Islabike is supplied with a fully enclosed no tools chain guard. To Oil simply apply general purpose maintenance oil to the port hole whilst simultaneously turning the cranks backwards to ensure full chain coverage.

2. Chain tension - If you have to remove your rear wheel for maintenance or puncture repair you will have to re-tension the chain. To do so re-fi t the chain to the sprockets and pull the wheel rewards to tension the chain. Once the chain is taught, alternately tighten the wheel bolts to the required 8Nm whilst ensuring the wheel remains central in the frame. There should be 6-12mm of chain movement.

Ensure the rear brake is re-connected and check before allowing your child to ride

For chain guard removal, installation and maintenance please refer see ‘maintaining your Cnoc chainguard’ on our ‘Info hub’ web page

Tyres and TubesTyre wear – Regularly check tyres for general wear and tear. Over time your tyres will become more worn and the tread depth will diminish, you may also note damage to the sidewalls. This can make the tyres more susceptible to punctures.

Tyre pressure – Regularly check the tyre pressures on your Islabike as they will gradually lose air over time. To check simply push your thumb hard into the tyre, if you can touch the rim the tyre will require more air. Alternatively, most quality bicycle track pumps feature a pressure gauge.

You should not exceed the maximum tyre pressure printed on the sidewall of the tyre. We recommend approx. 70% of the maximum tyre pressure illustrated on your tyre. To infl ate presta valves you must fi rst open the valve by unscrewing and tapping the valve end to relieve it if stuck. Infl ate to correct pressure and then carefully re-tighten to close the valve.

WheelsPerhaps considered one of the greatest inventions and key to your bike’s performance are its wheels. Here is some advice and checks to help keep them rotating.

Rim wear - Routinely check your bicycle rims for any wear. Our bikes have a wear indicator line that runs the circumference of the wheel braking surface. As the wheel wears this gradually becomes fl ush with the rest of the rim and disappears, indicating it is time to replace the wheel.

Rim trueness – Depending on the type of riding your child does the wheels may become damaged or untrue due to an impact whilst riding. This means they will not spin straight and can wobble from side to side. To check this please refer to step 3 Brakes. If for any reason the wheels do become untrue, they can easily be repaired by a qualifi ed cycle mechanic. Please contact us on +44(0)1584 856 881.

Hubs – Your hubs are fi tted with sealed cartridge bearings. These cartridge bearings are not adjustable or serviceable and should be replaced when they become worn.

Step 3 of 3

Adjust saddle height

1. Loosen seatpost clamp 2. Move to desired height 3. Tighten clockwise max. 5Nm

Seatposts are clearly marked with minimum insertion mark. Please do not raise saddle above this line

Safety fi rstBefore you head off we would like to give you some advice for safe cycling. If you are the responsible adult, parent or guardian we recommend the following precautions. If you choose for your child to wear a helmet, ensure that it is adjusted correctly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions

Ensure your child is wearing sturdy footwear and nothing can become entangled in the pedal or drivetrain

Avoid riding by any busy streets or highways

We pride ourselves on light action brakes, if your child is unfamiliar with cycling or has used other bikes previously our brakes will be more responsive. To check your child can come to a stop safely using the brakes, ask them to walk beside the bike and pull the brakes to feel their responsiveness

Ensure that your child familiarises themselves with their new bicycle in a safe environment

Your Islabike is set up so that the right brake lever operates the front and the left operates the rear. If the destination country drive on the right hand side of the road, then we set up the bike so that the right hand operates the rear brake

BrakesConsidered one of the most important safety features of your Islabike. It is a good habit to check the brakes on a regular basis. This should be done depending on the type, frequency or duration of riding. If your bike has not been used for a period of time we recommend a quick check before riding.

Pull the levers a few times to ensure function – The action should feel smooth and the levers should not pull all the way back to the handlebar. If the brakes are diffi cult to operate, please contact our technical support team: [email protected]

Check pads are contacting the rim correctly when braking - Pull on one brake at a time and take a closer look at the brake pads. Check to see if they are touching the rims nice and evenly when applied. If the pads are not contacting the rims, they are uneven or touching the tyre please contact our technical support team or visit our website for further information: http://www.islabikes.co.uk/info-hub

Check brake pads are not rubbing on the rim - Lift the front wheel off the ground and give it a gentle spin, check to make sure the pads are not rubbing on the rim. Repeat the process with the rear wheel. Please ensure children are at a safe distance as they could hurt themselves if they put their fi ngers in a moving wheel. If either wheel does not spin correctly or catches on the brake pads please contact our technical support team on +44(0)1584 856 881 or visit www.islabikes.co.uk for further information.

Check the brake pads for wear - Brake pads are subject to wear and tear and should be replaced from time to time. Again, this will depend on the type, frequency and duration of riding. Our brake pads come with a wear indicator line. If your brakes are now worn down to this line you should consider replacing your brake pads. If you cannot fi nd the line, please replace immediately or seek advice.

Maintenance Keeping your bike clean and maintained comes with many benefi ts. Not only will your Islabike perform better but it will be safer, last longer and look great. To do this we have listed some regular checks to help you along the way. Of course, if you are unsure of anything we strongly recommend you seek professional advice or contact us.

Firstly, moving parts on your cycle will need lubricating from time to time. Weather conditions are generally the biggest factor that determine frequency of maintenance and lubrication. However, it is also heavily dependent on the frequency, type and duration of riding.

Be aware braking performance and grip will be drastically reduced in wet conditions

Always observe national legal requirements if riding on public roads

Tumbles are an inevitable part of growing up and riding a bike. Sometimes the bike can get damaged. It is very important to inspect if an accident occurs. In particular, check the following:

- Wheel trueness - Handelbar grips - Saddle damage

As with all mechanical components, the bicycle is subject to wear and stress. Different materials and components may react to wear or stress fatigue in different ways. If the design life of a component has been exceeded, it may suddenly fail, possibly causing injuries to the rider. Cracks and scratches or a change of colour could indicate that the design life of the component has been reached and it should be replaced. Extra care should be taken in inspection of parts that are subjected to high levels of stress

Our bikes have been vigorously tested and exceed the required standards. However, use in hazardous conditions, including changeable and uneven surfaces can exert high and unpredictable loads on the bicycle and any components fi tted to it. Lack of rider skill and experience can add to these loads, leading to the possibility of serious damage to the bicycle and injury to the rider. If you choose to use your bicycle in these conditions, then please carry out more frequent and thorough maintenance and checks. Carry out regular inspections of the frame, fork, stem, cranks and handlebars for signs of damage, and discontinue use immediately and contact [email protected] if anything untoward is noted
