Dramatic increases in passenger numbers and morereliable train services on the Derwent Valley Line areproving a great success for local people and visitors, claimsthe Derwent Valley Line Community Rail Partnership. The release of figures covering the 12 months to 31 March2010 show a dramatic increase in passenger numbers andtrains consistently running to time.

A 42% increase in passengers using local stations on theline has occurred during 2009/10 compared to 2008/9. The highest increases during 2009/10 were at MatlockBath and Duffield stations with 62% and 49%increases respectively and during the last two yearsthere was a 72% rise in passengers. The figures show that the service has gone from strengthto strength with the increase in service frequency tohourly on Mondays to Saturdays, serving all local stationswith direct through services to Nottingham. The resultof the improved rail service can clearly be seen with morepeople using the line to travel to work and college as wellfor general leisure trips including shopping in Derby andNottingham.

Councillor Garry Purdy, Chair of the Derwent Valley LineCommunity Rail Partnership said: “The train service has beena great success and the Partnership is really pleased to seemore and more people using the service.”

Last February, after passinghis final medical exams withhonours to qualify as adoctor, my brother Tom wenton a work placement at theAdidas Sports Clinic inAuckland. Participating in sport was one ofTom’s true passions, and it waswhilst he was trying out a newsports activity that Tom (seepicture) tragically sufferedserious head injuries.Back in 2004, Tom and a groupof friends ran the LondonMarathon in memory of WillSheppard. Inspired by Tom, a group of usdecided it would be the perfectway to honour his memory .We wanted to support Headwaybecause it raises awarenessabout the prevention of braininjuries, and it would mean somuch if we could help preventother families going throughwhat we are going through afterlosing Tom.

Headway has also helped RossDurkin in his recuperation. So, donned in butterflycostumes, Headway tops andMeningitis Trust vests, 15 of uscompeted the Virgin LondonMarathon. After months of training in thewind, rain and snow, the dayfinally arrived and we allmanaged to get round the coursein one piece.Accompanied by two otherbeautiful butterflies, Freya andEmma Stewart, I had the mostincredible experience. The crowds were absolutely

amazing;and the times wespotted my dad and the manyfriends and family who hadmade the journey down tosupport us were just brilliant.Seeing your friends at the 23mile mark gives you such anenergy boost and puts the largestsmile on your face – you forgetabout the pain that the previous23 miles have caused! With the three butterfliesfinishing in 5 hours and 24minutes, Freya and I knew mymum would not be far behind. Seeing my mum come runninground the corner with a massivesmile on her face has got to be,and will always be, the proudestmoment of my life. I know Tom will have beenlooking down on her, and all ofus, with exactly the samefeeling. Last summer we set out to raise£1500 each for Headway andthe Meningitis Trust. Followingmany hugely successful

fundraising events andsponsorship from friends andfamily all over England, we areso pleased to say that we haveraised £45,000 for the twocharities, all in Tom’s name.Thank you so so much to everyone of you who has supportedus in some way; most recentlyto Pete Taylor and everyone elseat Ecclesbourne School for thenon-uniform day and sponsoredmile held in March, whichraised £7000. Finally, thank youto Lindsay (Duffield’s ownPaula Radcliffe!), Emma, Katie,Furno, Delves, Dave, Dave,Lee, Gaz and Jamie for puttingyourselves through thischallenge for Tom. And last but definitely not least, thanks to Ian Grostate, ‘Grosie’,for chairing our fundraisingcommittee, for your months ofhard work, for being my mum’spersonal trainer, and for stickingwith her for the 26.2 miles.

NO ELEPHANTS! BUTSOME HIGH CLASS POND LIFE“What animals do youthink we’ll find livingin the copses?”“Birds! Foxes! Spiders!Ladybirds! Frogs!Insects! Rabbits!” There was a chorus ofreplies from the twentyBeavers (children – notthe furry, tree fellingsort) waiting to help mestack the logs and brashfrom the thinning of thethird copse the otherevening. “Elephants!” came alate suggestion. “Now that would beamazing. Keep youreyes open - and can youjust put that big stickdown for a moment?”A potential javelin wasplaced back on theground. The kids did a brilliantjob and the frog theyfound survived beingthoroughly looked atand commented on.Sometimes it is easy tore-enter the world ofchildren. The screaming of theswifts overhead theother day took me backto being seven yearsold, lying in bed halfasleep on an earlysummer evening withlight coming throughthe closed curtains, hearing the swish of mydad’s scythe cutting thelong grass. Dry weather remindsme of playing“earthquakes” usingthe cracks in the lawn;making dens from oldsheets and if lucky,

scaring ourselves aboutthe rustlings of thenight as we slept in atent on the lawn;making perfume fromrose petals; wickedsmelling potions fromany berries and flowerswe could find; turningup rocks looking formini-beasts; beingslightly scared ofearwigs and the devil’s

coach horse withhis scorpion-like tail. So when I recently hadthe chance to go ponddipping, I didn’t needmuch persuading!Armed with newlymade dippingimplements (sticks ontowhich we gaffer tapedplastic sieves fromWilkos), a small plastictable, shallow whitetrays, two foldingchairs, a flask of coffee

(no orange squash andjam sandwiches thistime) and a foldercontaining theidentification charts,my husband and Isettled down at 9.30one sunny morning totest the ponds in theWetland – and instantlyfelt about 10 years oldagain! When I was a kid, Ioften mistakenly tookmy catch home to keep– only to discover thepoor tadpoles andminnows dead within

days or escaped, like the three crayfish Ionce domiciled in anold cast iron kettle! This time was different;we were countingspecies and thenputting them straightback. We watchedcamouflaged caddis flylarvae like living stickscrawl across the bottomof the tray ; water

boatmen speedilyrowing roundconfusing the watersnails; damselfly larvaewith their fancy threepronged tailsdisturbing the largerdragon fly larvae nearlytwice their size. All thetime the edges of theponds were black witha fringe of frogtadpoles, seeminglyfeeling safer innumbers unlike theirtoad counterparts whowere swimming inamongst the reeds. Apart from the coffee, the biggest differencewas it was all in thename of science !London University, incollaboration with theOPAL (Open AirLaboratory)organisation ,areconducting a Nationalsurvey to assess thehealth of ponds up anddown the land. Their chart scores eachanimal and any totalover 31 is consideredvery healthy. Our ponds scored 58 –

very gratifying and arebuttal to the chapwalking his dog theother day who declaredthat surely the pondsweren’t important andhis dog swimming inthem wouldn’t do anyharm. And you know what? It was three hours ofgreat, childish funalthough we didn’t seeany elephants !

Garden sheds are oftenoverlooked when it comesto security. You may think that there is

not much of value in your

garden shed, but by the time

you’ve totted up the contents

and off-set that against your

insurance excess, it’s

probably cheaper to keep

your shed secure. It’s also

worth bearing in mind that

any tools could be used by a

burglar to get into your

house.

Doors - Shed doors are

notoriously easy to get into

so strengthen the door and

frame if you can.

Hinges - Typically outside

sheds have outside hinges so

no matter how effective the

lock, all the burglar has to do

is unscrew the hinges and

then choose what to take.

Consider replacing the

screws with clutch head

screws (or security screws).

These are specially designed

so that they can be screwed

in easily, but once fitted,

cannot easily be removed

(other than by drilling out).

An alternative is to use cross

headed screws (Phillips

pozidrive) and when fitted,

drill out the centre of the

head.

Padlocks - Usually the

locking device on a shed is a

padlock and hasp but this can

easily be removed if the hasp

has exposed screws.

This can be made more

secure if either the screws are

of a clutch head type, or the

hasp is replaced with a

security hasp.

A security hasp is designed

to ensure that the mounting

screws are covered by the

hasp when the shed is locked.

Additionally a padlock

with a closed shackle can

be fitted.

Windows - A window in

the shed helps a burglar to

see what’s in there.

If it can be opened easily

then decide if you really

need to open it and if not

screw it down so that it

cannot be easily opened.

Covering it with curtains

or a piece of cardboard

keeps out prying eyes and

it can be removed if it is

necessary to work in there.

You could use Perspex or

polycarbonate sheet if well

fixed.

Use a window lock on

opening windows and a

strong grille or heavy wire

mesh.

Secure property - Consider

securing property in the shed,

so that even if someone did

break into it, they would not

just be able to walk off with

all your property or use it to

break into your house. Chain

cycles, mowers, ladders and

tools to a strong anchor point

such as metal rings fixed in

concrete to the floor using a

close shackle padlock.

Lock ladders inside the

garage or shed to stop a thief

using them to reach

inaccessible windows. Mark

your property to deter

burglars and ensure

equipment can be identified

if it is stolen.

Alarm - A battery operated

alarm may act as a deterrent

but one which sounds in the

house would be better. If

you have a house alarm, you

could have it upgraded to

include your shed or garage.

Reporting Incidents:

Please do report (non-

serious) crimes and

incidents to the police on

0345 123 33 33 (for serious

crimes use 999). I am

aware that incidents occur

and I’m also aware that they

are not always reported.

If the police do not know

that these crimes are

happening they assume that

all is well and for certain

nothing will then be done

and it could escalate.
