I arrived home to find a boxof apples on my doorstep... .not an unusual occurrencein our home village ofTurmditch where neighboursoften leave each other avariety of produce fromcourgettes, beans, tomatoesto soft fruit, homemadejams, flowers, cakes andeven fire wood. It all helps to ensure Turnditchstill maintains a villageatmosphere and a communityspirit. We have an excellent primaryschool (awarded outstandingstatus in 2012), two characterpubs, a church and a UKaward winning butcher anddelicatessen. The shop of course is thesource of all information ofwhat is going on in the villagealong with the parishmagazine which hasinteresting articles and is fullof details on the local socialcalendar. The school is very versatile inthe activities on offer such astheir garden with flowers, vegetables and grassed areas. They link with other schoolsincluding athleticcompetitions, footballtournaments, a tri-golfcompetition, cycling events, etc. Culturally they also excel andhold events such a poetryreciting competition. Theannual stage performance bythe primary school is also anevent not to be missed. The village hall is a hub ofactivity where several groupsmeet including WI, indoorbowling, tap dancing, keep fitand a plethora of other eventsand now and again a dance, concert or curling evening. There is also a walking groupto take advantage of thefantastic countryside and thewonderful views and anopportunity to have a goodpub lunch in one of the manywatering holes in the area. Asponsored walk also raisesmoney for nominated charities.

We enjoy the wine tastingevenings but there are still thetraditional coffee mornings, toddler groups, yoga, whistdrives, etc and there are manyevents such as the summerparty which is hosted eachyear by a resident, theproceeds in aid of the localchurch and the Summer Fayre

which provides a boost for theschool funds. The WI is also very active andtakes part in national as wellas regional and local events, social activities, organisedtrips and competitions. There is a wealth of talent inthis group of creative womenwho also raise money forvarious charities and projects. They have lively debates andinvolve the group in a varietyof issues creating awarenessand inspiring others. Monthly speakers entertain ona variety of topics, a recentone was Pollyanna Pickeringwho talked abut her visit toChina, seeing pandas in thewild and how it inspired herartwork. The big event in September isthe Turnditch and WindleyShow. This has trade stands, all things horsey, the localvillage garden competition, vintage tractors, flowers, art, cookery, photography, handicrafts and much, muchmore. The heart of the villagehowever has to be the peoplein it. We have an eclecticmix of characters with avariety of interests includingbee keepers, MG and classiccar collectors, artisans, anangler, traction engine andrailway enthusiasts (yesthere is a traction engine in

the garden) and classic bikecollectors. Whilst in the front gardenpeople speak or stop to chat,be it dog walkers, seriouswalkers, and evening passingcyclists. Here the postman speaks andwe still get things deliveredsuch as papers, milk and localtraders like fishmongers alsocome to your door; services

long gone in many areas butwe can still get our shoppingdelivered from thesupermarket as well via ourbroadband order if we sowish. The other stars of the villagemust be the wild life that visitsthe gardens. We have anextensive variety of birdsincluding jays, woodpeckers, and various colourful smallbirds, sparrow hawks andfamilies of pheasants. The pheasants strut their stufffrom garden to garden. Theyare individual characters,Percy, the alpha male, hasbeen around for a while now.The evening entertainment isprovided by bats which arefascinating to watch as theyemerge and fly in silhouetteagainst the night sky. The village holds a gardencompetition as well and whenwe were new to the village thegarden open day enabled us tomake many new friends as wewondered from garden togarden. So Turnditch has managed tohold on to a few of the oldfashioned, traditional valuesand rural lifestyle. We help each other with ourskills and advice, fromcooking hints, computersupport, gardening help togiving people a lift into thenearby towns.

We socialise together frompopping in for coffee tobarbecues, dinner and lunchparties and look out for eachother when on holiday, takingcare of greenhouses, puttingout bins, taking in parcels etc.Whilst enjoying village lifewe have the best of bothworlds as we are only threemiles from Belper andDuffield both with trainstations (just over an hour anda half to London) and alsoclose to Wirksworth with aheritage railway and farmers’markets and Ashbourne withelegant architecture and highquality shopping. We are also in a good locationfor many of the touristlocations such as Carsington,Buxton, Bakewell, Crich,Matlock and many more andare blessed with a variety ofNational Trust properties inthe area. Whilst on holiday recently Imet someone from Derbyshireand she had never heard of ourvillage where residentsinclude teachers, solicitors, doctors, business owners, farmers and even estate agents(they know the best places tolive). Clearly our existence isnot widely publicised. So if you are living, likemany do, where you do notknow your neighbours’names, probably never speakto anyone down your road andthink fraternizing with eachother as something that willnever happen then Turnditchproves to be a refreshingchange. When we moved here ourneighbours came round tointroduce themselves bearingwelcoming gifts. We wereinvited to join in local activitiesif we wished to do so. This friendliness creates afeeling of belonging andinclusion which is sadlylacking in many communitiesand why we feel veryprivileged to be a resident inthis little known historicvillage.

TURNDITCH... REALLY FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURSby

Scouts Update

1st Duffield Scouts attended a District Water Weekend at Carsington organised by Rob Morley (1st Holbrook) with the Bell Boating and Open water canoeing run by our very own District paddle guru Matt Davenport. Needless to say it was an action packed fun wet weekend.

Bell Boating on Carsington reservoir, not everyone has quite grasped paddling

Two teams from the village undertook the fiercely competitive Kinder Walk Challenge, a 10 mile hike starting out from Chapel en le Frith into the Peak District. The winning team completed the arduous course in 2 hours 15 minutes with Duffield close on their heels. Teamwork, orienteering and fitness are crucial to success. Above all it’s important to have fun.

All smiles, after completing the Kinder Challenge.

For more information on 1st Duffield Scouts please contact Alan Hudson (Group Scout Leader) on 01332 840377. We’d be delighted to hear from you.

Set in the OuterHebrides by an author I havenot read before and a murdermystery this title fittedperfectly into the NewWorlds section of thechallenge. When a bloodymurder occurs on the Isle ofLewis bearing the hallmarksof a similar slaying inEdinburgh, police detective

Fin Macleod is dispatchednorth to investigate. I thoroughly enjoyed thisatmospheric story; it is athrilling beginning to theexcellent Lewis Trilogy. The weather and sense ofplace and communitycombine to create a fabulousand very hard to put downnovel.

It was pouring with rain, thepaths were muddyunderfoot and the river wasrunning high with brownwater when I took a visitoraround the Meadowrecently. The leaden grey sky andlashing rain presented a dull, almost colourless picture withlittle sign of life. The drippingtrees and sodden plantskeletons did not look at theirbest and the last few lilac –blue cranesbill flowers werebent double with the heavyraindrops. Even the bright redrowanberries hung low undertheir weight of water and werefewer in number havingalready been eaten byblackbirds and the visitingredwings. As we trudged along in themisty grey gloom, I chatteredon trying hard to conjure thepicture of the meadow in fullbloom, trees ablaze withblossom and of the plethora ofbirds and insects to be found. I described marvelling at theclouds of butterflies gracingthe flowers but the relentlessdownpour and its cold, dampmood was not easily lifted. That is until later, when Istood near the corner of theMeadow where there is aRowan tree, an Elderberrybush and a large Laurel tree. A chorus of sound came fromamongst the wet leaves asblackbirds ‘chinked’ theiralarm calls and a marvellous, silvery twittering of about 30goldfinches (cardueliscarduelis) gave the lie to thedull day. These beautiful, colourfulbirds were oblivious to me astheir liquid conversationcarried on until there was acollective decision to moveand they flew out en masse

towards the meadow.Perchingprecariously andusing their longpointed beaks, they teasedseeds fromtheir chosenfood plants(although onlythe males areable to extractteasel seedsbecause theyhave a longer beakthan the females)before flying off againin a noisy group to thebushes. It is easy to see why it was afavoured cage bird in ancient

times (and to the present dayin some countries). Theplumage of black, red andwhite head with a brightyellow band on the black wingand white and buff chest isvery attractive and their songwas much sought after for itsbeauty and mellifluousqualities. There is evidence that in the8th century BC bird cageswere common, the Greeksdepicted them on vases

around the 5th and 4thcentury BC and in

Medieval timesmany castleinventoriesand costaccountsmention birdcages. We refer to agroup ofGoldfinches

as a “charm” -maybe in

reference to theblended voice of a

choir - and Vivaldiclearly agreed, writing a

concerto in D major where theflute mimics the sound of “IlGardellino”. These fabulous

little finches are our mostbrightly coloured bird and alarge proportion remain overthe winter (approx. 100,000which is about a third). They stay wherever they canfind food, moving ever moresouth if need be and ourMeadow is a very good sourcehaving thistles, knapweed andteasels during these earlywinter months – a follow onfrom the dandelion, groundsels and ragworts.

The rest migrate to mainlandEurope and in years gone by,this regular migration was thecause of major dips inpopulation. In the mid 19th century forinstance, 130,000 birds weretrapped near Worthing and theRSPB made campaigning tostop this its first priority whenformed in 1904. There was also a steep declinein numbers during the 1970’sand 80’s thought to be theresult of lack of weed seedsdue to the intensification ofagriculture. It is worth pointing out herethat in this country, it is illegalto capture or sell wild birds(Wildlife and Countryside Act1981). The change in our habits hasalso encouraged moreGoldfinches to overwinter. The amount of food that wenow provide in garden birdfeeders is what keeps themaround – especially if it issunflower hearts and nygerseed. The latter is a small seed thatonly they seem to reallyfavour due to their slim, pointed beaks that differmarkedly from other finches’bulkier ones. So as winter begins to bite andwe lose the light, look out andlisten for this delightful nativebird as it is bound to brightenyour day. We also hope that the return ofthe cows will do the same! The reason the flowers do sowell is down to the grazinghabits of the wonderfulcreatures that get rid of thetough, matted grass. Look out for the notices anddog walkers, please respectthe need to keep your dogson leads during this period, which should begin inNovember.

This month’s articlecontains an item Irecently received from thepolice warning people toprotect their homesagainst criminals as thedarker nights draw in.In the last year, there hasbeen a 12 per cent drop inthe number of houseburglaries across Derbyshire, but there is often a seasonalrise as opportunist thievestake advantage of the darknights to target homes.Safer Neighbourhood teams willbe stepping up patrols, targeting known offendersand going door to door withprevention leaflets.Officers are also urgingresidents to take steps toprotect their homes frombeing targeted bycriminals, such as fittingburglar alarms wherepossible and keeping

valuables out of sight. The police have said that areduction in burglariesacross Derbyshire is verypleasing to see but at thistime of year, as it becomesdarker at an earlier time, itis definitely worthchecking your homesecurity to reduce the riskof being targeted as muchas possible. There are some simpletechniques to help you dothis. As it gets dark, it’s easier totell when a home isunoccupied so it makessense to introduce somesimple security measures tocreate the impression thatsomeone is at home, suchas the use of timingswitches on lamps. This not only helps todeceive burglars but it alsoreduces the chance thatyour home will be targeted.

Timer switches can ensureyour lights areautomatically switched onbefore you get home.Switching on lights beforeyou go out is anotheroption but remember todraw your curtains to stoppeople from seeing insideyour property.Security advice offered bypolice includes:• Do not leave anyvaluables lying aroundwhere burglars could seethem and store small, highvalue items and bankingdocuments in a safe or asecure, discreet location• Ensure that your propertyis secure and windows anddoors are locked evenwhen you are at home• If possible have a burglaralarm fitted to yourpremises• Mark valuable propertywith a UV pen so that if it isstolen and recovered by thepolice, it can be reunitedwith its rightful owner• Register any valuableproperty using an assetregister such aswww.immobilise.comRemain vigilant and reportsuspicious activityimmediately to the policeeither on 101 or 999 in anemergency. You can also passinformation to Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555111.

Drop-in sessions: OnThursday 21st Novemberthe Mobile Police Office willbe on Town Street between10.00am - 11.00am andbetween 11.15 - 11.45 onHazelwood Hill, Hazelwood.

These sessions are forresidents to visit withqueries or problems or toobtain advice on thingssuch as security or otherissues that are of concern.

Reporting incidents:Please report non-seriouscrimes and incidents to thepolice on the non-emergency number 101.For emergencies, such aswhen a crime is inprogress, when there is danger to life or whenviolence is being used orthreatened, 999 should beused. Chiropractic is about health! When a patient complainsabout shoulder pain there may be many differentcomplications. It is your chiropractic doctor’s job todiagnose and confirm that this particular disorder, orcause of dis-ease, is something that we can deal with. If not, we need to refer you to appropriate care. That meanswe cannot deal with your complaint, and probably surgery orsome other form of treatment is necessary. Nociceptors send messages up to the brain. Those messages get translated into an emotional reaction inthe limbic system of the brain which dictates how we react tothe stimulus. Every single person reacts differently to those messages andit is our job to work out how and why. Always we look for a primary cause of dysfunction. This means that all the adaptation and compensating that wedo to relieve pain finally has a reaction. It may be that veryshoulder pain that has been compensating for your neck orlower back pain that caused it to finally give in. The good news? It is purely chiropractic treatment that can make it better. It iswhat we call a kinetic chain reaction. The whole body is afunctional unit, and must always be seen as this organic, living particle, which lives with and reacts to motion andforces that it deals with all day long.
