Lacanche is, primarily, a pretty Burgundy village near Beaune and the Canche, the river that traverses it.It is also a story that stretches back quite a way. The Lacanche workshops, established at the start of the 19th Century by Jacques Etienne Caumartin around a foundry, over time have become the hub for manufacturing range cookers that are nowadays known as “Pianos Gastronomes”.
In 1982, André Augagneur and his associates decided to buy this business. He had worked at Lacanche for years and did not feel like being reassigned somewhere in La Défense. At 45 years of age, it was quite a gamble, but he decided to take on the challenge and take on this loss-making site. That is when this legacy was laid down…brought to life by the 12 models of the range with names that recall our home region: Beaune, Cluny, Saulieu, Fontenay or Cîteaux. The “Pianos Gastronomes” by Lacanche occupy their place in the high-end and creative market, always at the cutting edge of new and more sophisticated technologies. Whilst their aesthetic appeal has made them a “must have”, their performance and reliability are highly regarded by professionals. Made using materials and components that are essentially metallic, they are more than 90% recyclable.
Each Lacanche oven is a unique piece that is made on demand and personalised thanks to a wide variety of options, colours of enamel and finishing touches. The Château de Béru is a historic family wine estate that is over 400 years old. It is set in the midst of the vines, overlooking one of the most charming hillsides of the Chablisien area, in the village of Béru. In 14 hectares of vines, the real gem is the Clos Béru, whose plot dates back to the 13th Century. The wines from this estate produce the Chablis and Chablis 1er Cru appellations.
Athénaïs de Béru took command in 2006, converting the vineyards to organic production. But this young wine maker didn’t stop there.
She also created a new and complementary brand that bears her name: this is a “carefully thought out selection of plots and wine producers that grow grapes in the manner of the Burgundian terroirs”.
What is more, the Béru family opens the doors of the château itself. Three guest rooms, a gîte and two apartments are available to their guests so that they can sample Chablis from the inside. And don’t forget the ephemeral wine bar in the summer.

Since 4th July 2015, the “Climats” of Burgundy – which are appreciated by lowering your gaze and not raising your eyes to heaven, to paraphrase Bernard Pivot - have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
In this way UNESCO has recognised the Exceptional Universal Value (EUV) of the 1,247 plots of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. With prestigious wines, such as Pommard, Puligny-Montrachet, Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin…
Whilst the “Climats” only take in the Côte-d’Or, it is true that the entire Burgundy wine region benefits from this distinction. 250 kilometres long, it includes five wine-growing hillsides (plus a vineyard in the Nièvre) and six labelled wine routes. A unique terroir that the monks began to classify and enhance in the 7th Century. “Musigny”, “Montrachet”, “Clos des Mouches”, “Rugiens”, “Les Amoureuses”… it is all of this Burgundian subtlety that UNESCO has decided to safeguard. This classification is the result of the efforts of more than 60,000 people that rallied behind Aubert de Villaine, the President of the “Climats” of the Burgundy Wine Region association and, also, the manager of the famous Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

This is a former wine producing property that nowadays pampers wine tourists. The Clos de la Challangette has successfully reinvented itself. Two typically Burgundian guest houses and two gîtes breathe new life into these agricultural buildings, most notably the farmhouse and stables. Jackie David has entirely renovated and decorated the site with great taste, without sacrificing the authenticity of the property. Much more unusual are the two Roulotte gypsy caravans that wait in the garden for lovers of quirky accommodation.The Clos de la Challangette has everything it needs to become an essential feature of the Côte de Beaune. A heated outdoor pool and a sauna space (massages by appointment) make breaks here even more agreeable. This English sculptor, based in Burgundy, creates figurative works in relief… to our delight and to the delight of Queen Elizabeth II.
He creates these works, imposing pieces in bronze, resin or terracotta, in a workshop close to Pouilly-en-Auxois, in the Côte-d’Or.His creations are veritable urban landscapes in relief, large or small, like his miniature worlds that he sets up and that spring to life depending on the angle of vision. More imposing sculptures provide an original view of modern life: “the urban comedy”, a 25 metre long terracotta piece on show at the Galeries Royales Saint- Hubert, in Brussels. “The meeting place”, nine metres tall, represents a couple of travellers in a tender embrace. It adorns St Pancras International
railway station in London. In the Ouche Valley, it is at Bussière Abbey that you can admire many of his works, or in Beaune in the hall of the Lanterne Magique.
A loyal subject of Her Majesty, his talent has been saluted by the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, who commissioned him for the “Battle of Britain Monument”, in tribute to the Queen Mother.

Created by X (Xavier Pauchard), these galvanised chairs and stools appear in the collections of the Vitra DesignMuseum, MoMa and the Centre Pompidou. The extremely famous “Model A”, manufactured by Tolix in Autun, is nowadays an icon of industrial furniture production. Originally, this was the 1st industrially produced chair in France. A trendy cult object, it is still manufactured using the moulds created by Xavier Pauchard, out of molten zinc. Packed aboard the ocean liner Normandie in 1935, in 1937 these chairs also adorned the aisles of the World Exhibition of Art and Technology. At the end of the 1950’s, Tolix and its 80 workers were turning out nearly 60,000 units per year.
Chantal Andriot brought a new élan to Tolix. It was out of a passion and loyalty for the business that this former financial director took over the company with a handful of employees. A woman alone in a man’s world, she surrounded herself with the designers Jean-François Dingjian and Eloi Chafaï (Normal Studio) to assist her with artistic direction. “Their designs questioned the industrial process and freed them from the past in order to showcase the legendary savoir-faire of the workshop”.Today, half of Tolix’s revenue comes from exports, half of which is to the United States.It is an extraordinary destiny for a chair that was dreamed up to equip the terraces of cafés!

This is a success story born from a bonbon made with aniseed and created by monks in the 8th century. The first written evidence of aniseed dates from 1591. In 1814, in the little village of the Côte d’Or of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, there were 8 aniseed producers…It was Jacques Edmond Galimard who would bring the different factories together to form one sole production site. He took the crazy gamble of presenting these bonbons at the Universal Exhibition, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower: the idea was a great success and the reputation of aniseed spread beyond Burgundy!This success continued with the arrival of the Troubat family who had the aniseed sweets sold in automatic vending machines at train and metro stations. Behind this beautiful story is one family and one woman: Catherine Troubat.
After having studied communications and advertising, she came to work under her father, Jean Troubat, at the factory. “Apprentice owner” on the shop floor, she completed her theory training by taking evening courses and, in 1999, Catherine succeeded her father. Heading up a team of 27 employees, she developed sales of the aniseed sweets: in garden centres, in fine delicatessens, at airport kiosks the world over… She revamped the historic oval tins; herself designing the wicked saga of the shepherd and the shepherdess.She launched an organic range and started to welcome visitors: boutique, visit of the abbey and the bonbon production site. The factory has since inaugurated a museum in two of the abbey’s vaulted rooms.

This manufacturing site, based in southern Burgundy for more than 90 years, cheers up the feet of our nation’s ministers. These socks are actually sold in the boutique of the National Assembly and, very soon, at the Senate!
The Perrin workshop has created 4 brands: Perrin, the historic label ; Dagobert is a range of reversible socks; Berthe is for big feet “Berthe, nothing but socks and tights”, an innovative collection that is full of fantasy (models created by designer Régis Gautreau), and La Chaussette Française, a haute couture label that showcases the savoir-faire of this company.
Dior, Burberry, Sonia Rykiel, Jacadi, Tartine and Chocolat, Catimini… they also supply the haute couture fashion houses. The last representative of this tradition of French hosiery has endured thanks to its sense of adaptation and innovation. They have never fallen out of fashion. Quite the contrary! Today the company employs close to a hundred people in Montceau-les-Mines and manufactures 6,000 pair of socks and tights every day. These original and colourful creations are all made by hand. All of their motifs provide a little touch of folly.
Since 2015, thanks to Franck Couturier (you couldn’t make that up!), the dynamic owner of Perrin, you can visit the production site and discover their in-house savoir-faire. It is easy to “find your footing” by following the markings on the floor that are in place for this very purpose.
The visit ends at the boutique where you can find the right socks for your feet!With the whole world at their feet, the Perrin Company, the last sock company to manufacture 100% in France, even exports its products to the Middle Kingdom itself. A real achievement in this Made in China era.
