When I asked its meaning I was reminded I was obviously a dumb, Biblically illiterate Yankee and probably a liberal. Guilty! In those days in the St. Petersburg area John 3:16 was also the name of an organization similar to Mary’s Place or PPL. It was outreach, food shelves, job training - you name it. Of course, since those days I have, as we all have, become aware of John 3:16. It is ubiqui- tous - placards at athletic events, billboards; any time a group gathers together it appears. Some have considered it the creed honed down to its most precise statement. The great creedal statement of Judaism, the Shema, is “Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.” The Shema of Christianity might well be John 3:16. At the heart of it is a gift, God’s gift of God’s Self to us and for us. Paul tells us: “For by grace you have been saved and through faith and this is not from you; it is the gift of God.” It’s not easy to think we need or want help. We can do it all by ourselves. It is hard to surren- der ourselves to trust or believe. In the last year and a half I have certainly experienced the fear of surrendering and being out of control. From being placed in a hospital against my will to not being able to walk I think my biggest fear was that I would not ever be autonomous again but would be dependent on others. I certainly had people who were helping me, beyond my ability to ever thank them enough. But the wish is always to get back to normal. What a blessing just to go shopping by yourself, or even more intimate things. One of the rehab nurses at the hospital would call himself one of the ’temporarily able’ to clear up his true relationship is with the ‘disabled’. John 3:16 tells us that we are all, to a certain sense, ‘disabled’ but the remedy has come and sometimes from odd places.
