I have a small high top table that sits in front of my kitchen window with one upholstered bar stool by it. Recently I put a 32 inch flat screen TV in my kitchen and now I basically live in three rooms of my house; the kitchen, the upstairs office and the bedroom. The other 5 rooms and the garage are for, as George Carlin would say, ‘my stuff.’ You see, years of garage sales have left their mark. Do you need an over a hundred year old scythe? You’ve got one? Okay, how about assorted Red Wing pottery such as sour kraut canis- ters? I have two of them. Then there are Northern Pacific brakeman’s lanterns, 1 mint condition, 1 damaged, or, a railroad engineer’s oversized oil can in good condition. Maybe you want shov- els with CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) stamped on them or a solid steel miniature canon that can shoot a steely through a truck (I know, I did it). That’s just in the living room. You don’t see it happening, but the next thing you know your family is writing to TLC Hoarders on your behalf and begging for an interview. Although I must say in my own defense, it is all well organized and artistically laid out. I just read Laudatio Si, Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment, which made me suddenly reflect on my consumptive ways - at least I buy used stuff. . At last Monday’s Eco-Spirits meeting we did an introductory look at the encyclical which leaves us with questions galore. What are we going to do about global warming? How are we going to see that everyone gets a fair share of creation? How do we judge the value of the land ecologically and culturally? How do we change our consumption habits? (at least I buy used stuff) Pope Francis puts it on the same level as conversion from any other sinful behavior. Part of it is simply education, but part is also asking why we feel so empty to the point we have to fill ourselves with ‘things’. When I look out my kitchen window from my perch on the bar stool I see my large patch of decorative grass. Beyond that I can see the space between my neigh- bor’s garage and mine. He has most of the space and its weed infested. What strikes me when I look at his space are the giant thistles growing there. I know it was not done on purpose, but staring out the window each day I have started to notice something. These weeds attract a myriad of animal life. Maybe those manicured lawns need to be hid. I see count- less butterflies, dragonflies and bird species feeding off that thistle, maybe next year I will plant some thistle just for the animals. It’s a beginning. Peace Before Us: Today we invite you to participate in two immediate and concrete actions for peace:

Stop by our jail cell outside today to reflect on what it would be like to spend years in a 6X9 foot cell, 23 hours a day, with no interaction - and than take action on the inhumanity (and ineffectiveness) of prolonged solitary confinement. Our own Pope Francis has called it a form of torture. The Nat'l Reli-gious Campaign Against Torture asks us to call for an end to this practice as part of a broader reform of our criminal justice

system. Please take a moment to join the groundswell of support for ending this practice. Pax Christi USA (the national Catholic peace organization) is

following the lead of the Vatican and the Committee on Int'l Justice and Peace of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops in supporting an agreement between the U.S. and Iran that would take the world one step closer toward nuclear disarma-ment. You can help make this happen.

SJA Outreach Fund: When you donate to our SJA Outreach Fund, you can be assured that your donation goes toward relieving immediate emergencies for individuals and families in need, as well as providing support to organizations and projects that work for long term systemic change. In this way we respond to the Gospel's call to be people of both charity and justice - all part of the "Good news" we share with the world! FFI on the Outreach Fund and how it works, contact Julie Madden at the Parish Center.

Sister Parish Delegation: Thanks to all who hosted, drove, trans-lated and accompanied while our delegation was with us from Guatemala, THANK YOU! It was an enormous effort, led by our SJA Sister Parish committee, and the delegation was extraordinary. FFI on our Sister Parish

relationship and the next delegation from SJA to Tierra Nueva Dos, please contact Julie Madden.

Thank You, SJA! Your donations helped Blessed Kateri Church assist 160 children with new backpacks and school supplies - what a great start to the new school year! All the families served by this project are most grateful. You are the Beloved Community!

Praying For a Church For All Families: On Sept. 11 at 6:30 pm, at Our Lady of the Presentation Chapel (1884 Randolph Ave. in St. Paul) the Sisters of St. Joseph will host a prayer service focused on families on the margins of our church and our community. Non-perishable food items will be collected for Safe Zone, an organiza-tion serving teens who are homeless or precariously housed.

The Circle of Creation; The Story of St. Francis, Pope Francis and Us! On Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7 pm in the Church, join us for a celebration of the life of St. Francis, the message of Pope Francis, and the journey that a group of SJAers will be taking to join the Pope's visit in Philadelphia. This evening is a special SJA EcoSpirits gathering, and we will share music, prayer, testimony and action steps to save our planet and creation.
