1 Thursday 2 nd June 2011 President’s Pen Last week I reported the 700 club naming Skinter as a member of the club – oops, I know you are close, but it should have been Kingsley McGuire, sorry Kings. This weekend we traveled to Narrogin for a disappointing draw with Pirates, as we had the majority of play & shots at goal - maybe we are not accustomed to travel? The 2’s had a great victory with a hard paced game. Well done guys. I think the boys had a great time at Dougs’ farm, sleeping around the bon fire out in the open. Thanks to Dougs & his family. The back to the club night will be on Thursday night with the ones and twos playing, so please come down and support the boys and the club. I hope to get a few sponsors down there to show our support. And guess what, the "MONSTER" IS ARRIVING ON THIS NIGHT so we can have a bit of fun. We will be drawing our raffle on Thursday night, and with a prize value of over $500, why not pick up a few tickets at just $2 each? If you can’t be there on the night, just leave your name and number on the ticket stubb. Also I would like to congratulate Timmy Geers & Ross Hall for making it into the future squad of the Thundersticks. Well done guys, make us proud. Last Thursday was like a ghost town down at the club. What’s happened, the cold too much?! Come on everyone lets get behind the best club there is & enjoy the family atmosphere that we are proud to brag about. Fine wine, good food & drinks at club prices, take advantage of what we offer, get involved, have a night off from cooking, enjoy watching the top squads train, sit with us & give useless advice to anyone that wants to listen but best of all, be part of the club. That’s all for this week, enjoy the long weekend off. Steve McEntee President

PREMIER LEAGUE Mens Premier Alliance vs Curtin (Won 5 - 2) Goals: M. Bowater (3), N. Tate (2) Our first Friday night game for the season saw the boys pull in a good win, even though we all thought we had hypothermia by the end of the game. Good to see Mathew Bowater finally get some goals... about time if you ask me with the amount he's missed this year! Good win boys...try not to drink to many exports over the long weekend! Ladies Willow Bridge League vs Hale No report Ladies Promotion 2 vs Hale (Drew 0 - 0) Best: Team Effort This game showed that we are a quality team. Our teamwork and commitment were second to none! The solid tagging by our defenders shut down Hales right wing attack. Thanks to Tracey Cousens for stepping into goals at short notice and for Megan Silvey and Jeanette Leach's invaluable support on field. PROVISIONAL LEAGUE Mens Provisional 1 - BYE Ladies Provisional 1 vs Hale (Won 3 - 0) 2011-05-28 Best: E. Woodberry, U. Papendieck, R. Oakey Goals: S. Coggan (2), E. Woodberry Great work by the entire team to get our first win on the board. Not sure if it was the team dinner last week, the purple ribbons worn today or the fact that the team is gelling now and beginning to realise its potential. Don't let the progress slide over the long weekend - enjoy the break and come back hungry for more games like today. Ladies Provisional 2 Gold vs YMCC (Won 2 - 0) Best: M. Vince, E. Douglas, A. McCall Goals: M. Vince (2) Stella game girls! The first half was fantastic and we really clicked as a team, moving the ball as a group. Our on-field communication and possesion of the ball were much better than in previous weeks. We must have had 80% possession in the first half mainly thanks to our excellent press in the attacking half. Game highlights were Marion's two goals (just brilliant)and how we really pulled together as a team and played our game. Thanks to Bec and Nathan for giving up their Saturday evenings to come and coach us - we really apreciate it! We need to keep our team focus, keep training hard and look to the next game. Top job girls! Ladies Provisional 3 Gold - BYE Mens Provisional 4 vs Canning (Won 7 - 0) Best: J. Thomas, J. Yates, G. Thomas Goals: G. Thomas (2), A. Wragg (2), H. Love, Z. Hill, J. Yates I think last week was a wakeup call for most of the players because this week they showed some real class and poise to produce some fine hockey. Our ability to pass around opposition players with ease was evident in patches of plays however we will need to keep it up throughout the game if we are going to show our true potential. It was a great return of our famed in and out player Chilli and some real good runs through the centre then out to the wings with Jackson and Joel combining very well.

METROPOLITAN LEAGUE Mens Metro 1 vs WASPS (Drew 4 - 4) Best: B. Wake, K. Armitage, R. Weddikkara Goals: A. Halliday (2), K. Armitage, R. Weddikkara Unlike the Eagles we were able to come away with a point against the reigning premiers. Went into the break down 2-1 after missing a couple of chances. The sliced oranges and lemon lime cordial at half time worked a treat as we put away 3 quick goals to go up 4-2. Unfortunately the sugar buzz wore off which saw WASPS put away a couple late to finish all square. Kudos to Mr Wake for a stand out game in the net (just ignore the fact he let in 4) and thanks to Jimmy for filling in. Ladies Metro 1 vs Cowan Uni No report Mens Metro 2 Gold vs NC Raiders (Lost 1 - 3) Best: A. Criddle, D. Shiers, C. Antonio Goals: N. Keene A well fought out game by the boys with us being very undermanned. We were in the game until the last 5 minutes however we were just unable to put away our chances. Congrats to Neil for notching his first goal for the club.

Mens Metro 3 Black Best: D. Wake, M. Willis, T. McEntee/D. Walker/M. Coelho Goals: D. Wake Another disappointing loss. Again, we got up to speed too late and then fell apart when the opposition took the lead. Again, boys, we just need to focus on the basics. Better luck next week.... VETERANS Mens Midweek Masters vs NC Raiders (Won 4 - 1) Best: M. Watton, J. Cooke, B. Rushton Goals: D. Joseph, M. Starling, M. Watton, D. Wilson With the top three sides ahead of us this was an important win - only marred by a dummy spit of herculean proportions by Crowey, who couldn't handle the pain of being reminded of just how ordinary a keeper he is when Raiders deprived him of a (lets face it, thoroughly undeserved) clean sheet with a shot that wouldn't have troubled Stevie Wonder to save ...

Ladies Rae Blunt Pennant vs Uni Soaks (Lost 0 - 10) Best: N. Johnson, G. Forbes, D. Smith What can we say? That was close.... No not close - when you lose a goal in the first minute you know it is not going to be close! We were very much outplayed and outwitted. Special mentions to Nat in goal - where would we have been without you and to Gillian and her desperate efforts to be attacking - we won't lose next week as we have a bye!!! Ladies Masters Div 3 vs CT Pirates (Lost 0 - 3) Best: S. Brockman, L. O'Sullivan, H. Doyle What a game. We couldn't buy a goal, we had some great play, we just don't capitalise on all our hard work. It was unbelievable they scored 3 goals with half the effort. Thanks to Mhairi for coming at short notice. Mens Masters 40-1 vs Kalamunda (Lost 0 - 1) Best: A. Etelaaho/W. Harries, A. Scanlon A VERY disappointing result - definitely one that got away. Crowey, the Eric Cartman of Vets hockey demonstrated once again that he needs more chops than just the vocabulary of a wharfie and the body mass to generate his own gravitational field ... sigh ... Mens Masters 40-4 vs Blades (Drew 2 - 2) Best: P. Paino, D. Stonehouse, M. Knuiman Goals: M. Knuiman, S. Girling We played away to Blades this week. We still had a few players out from the bruising game against Fremantle a few weeks ago and another few away. Luckily (for us) the 50s had a forfeit and Bob joined us. Blades are a good team and beat us badly last year so we were all on our toes and started off strong. The game was fairly even and both teams had their chances until Blades scored late in the first half. The second half started a bit slower but then we scored two quick goals midway through the session and the game picked up again. Blades were rattled but then regained their composure to level at 2-2. The last 10 minutes saw end to end hockey as both teams ran out of legs. A big thanks to Tony who provided the post game cheer in honour of his birthday. Mens Masters 50-1 vs NC Raiders (Won 3 - 1) Best: P. Meacock, A. Reynolds, W. Hudson Goals: G. Hunt, A. Reynolds, D. Dedman Congratulations to Pat Matthews on your 600th game. If our boys needed an incentive to win this was it and the fact there was chocolate cake waiting on the sidelines. It was a slow and frustrating game but with coaching from the sidelines the boys pulled together and won the game. The star of this game goes to Catherine Timmel for baking and decorating Pat's 600th celebration cake. She set it all up on a table for the boys to help celebrate with Pat after the game. From everyone that was there a BIG THANKS goes to you Catherine for making this win a whole lot sweeter. Mens Masters 50-2 vs Westside Wolves (Lost 1 - 2) Best: B. Morrison, E. Nell, C. Avent Goals: G. Coleman This was far from a great effort in a game we dominated early only to end up losing. We missed too many goals and took too many unrealistic shots at goal. Not a great day at all really. Mens Masters 50-3 vs Rockingham No report

Mens Masters 60 vs Wolves 2 (Won 2 - 1) Best: G. Riley, T. Parker, J. Smith A match we might've expected to be easy, against a team with only one previous win, but definitely wasn't. The Dockers home game, the top team game in Narrogin, work and travel all conspired to see us play most of the game one short, while the opposition were able to call in sweaty but strong reinforcements from a previous 050s game. In the end, a well fought win, helped by convincing the opposition that we should able to call in a reinforcment of our own for the last 15 minutes. Thanks to Frank for making an impact in that time & to goalie Geoff for playing in spite of a crook knee.

JUNIORS Boys 11/12A vs WASPS (Lost 1 - 8) Goals: N. Tate Just check that score again. (sigh). As mentioned last week the Ferrari wasn’t quite on song. Like the Australian movie ‘The Big Steal’ I suspect someone has swapped engines because I didn’t even recognise a tune this week. If the opposition was sharp, Melville was blunt. The post mortem suggests death by malnutrition. What is evident as you roam the savannah is that hungry beasts are the most dangerous – if you want to eat, start hunting. And if you can do it in packs, all the better. Thanks to Ben Joseph for filling the goals this week. Girls 11/12A vs Wolves (Lost 0 - 3) Best: K. Silvey, J. Miller, E. Stove No Report Boys 11/12B Black Maroon - BYE Boys 11/12B Black White vs Joondalup Lakers (Lost 0 - 1) Best: J. Pierluigi, J. Whiley, L. Dymond Unfortunately one of those games where the score does not reflect the game. We had 6 or 7 shots and couldn't make it count whereas they only needed the one on target to get the points. That said, once we start putting our chances away we'll be a force to be reckoned with in this grade. Thanks once again to our fill-ins, Tom, Jacob and Alex Girls 11/12B Best: B. Lawrence, S. De Melo, S. Bailey The girls went into the game coming off their first bye, with high hopes for a win. throughout the first half of play the opposition (hale blue) outplayed them ending the half with a 2 - 0 lead. After some firey words from the coach the girls came out with a new look about them. With some great passing all round the girls were able to claw back the 2 goals with two brilliant strikes from Sondren Bailey. From then the scores would stay level and the game would end in a draw. Throughout the game sore great performances from fill in player Brittany Lawrence and Shannon De Melo, and great communication from full back by Tori Vince. Overall the girls played a great game and will hopefully get that 2nd win next week.

Boys 9/10A vs WASPS (Won 7 - 2) 2011-05-29 Best: Jayden Lawrence, Jack Davoren, Bryn deBes, Ashley Ranford Goals: F. Hay (2), J. Coleman, B. De Bes, J. Lawrence, A. Ranford, M. Tate The boys put on a strong performance over a much under rated WASPs team. It would have been a closer score line if it wasn't due to the excellent tackling the defensive group showed. There were passages of excellent passing that opened the game up and allowed some great attacking moves that resulted in goals. Girls 9/10A vs Pirates (Won 4 - 2) Best: G. Bowyer, P. Hudson/L. Lefroy, R. Harrup Goals: G. Bowyer, N. Clay, L. Lefroy, A. McNess A great win by the Melville girls. A real team effort with everyone doing their bit to ensure our second win of the season. Two nil up and cruising along then we went to sleep after half time and pirates hit back two all. Girls we really need to stop this happening, but to our credit we fought back well with a great goal by grace, and a new short corner variation sealed the deal close to the siren. Special mention great job stand in coach don and also Monique for stepping up from 7/8 a great save on the line. Well done to all. Girls 9/10A Reserve - BYE Boys 9/10B Black vs OGMHC No report Girls 9/10B Gold vs Wolves Grey (Lost 0 - 3) Best: R. Brims, T. Challew, E. Girling, A. Widger, A.Wangpen On a stunning Sunday morning at the Mecca of hockey – Perth Hockey Stadium we enjoyed another tough week of hockey, and another week of playing with little luck. It was a real team effort which was reflected in the best player votes with a very even spread of votes. The game produced flashes of brilliance in amongst the hard slog; Risa’s slap hit shot at goal missed by centimetres and Avril’s great hit into the D which was unlucky not to deflect into the goal. Fantastic saves from our goal keeper, Elena, who was extremely cool in a crises!! Great clearance hits and strong defensive work from Cara and Maddie, plus impressive stick skills from Tanesha on many occasions were signs of the improvement achieved to date. Probably most improved this week though goes to our midfielders/wingers Emma Chloe Alice Gillian and Eliza but it was a hot second half from Rhianna that saw her get into the best on for this week.

the ball to remain channelled through the centre rather than pushing it out to the wings. Kalamunda was very strong in their defence and although we carried the ball down to the goals we were unable to score through simple errors which resulted in easy turnovers. Samuel played a great game at centre but a lack of support saw him trying to do too much on his own. With players being moved through positions because of injuries it was difficult for them to settle into their role. Following a halftime “rev up ” by the coach, the boys played more as a team. This half we focussed on extending our game, which forced Kalamunda to play a more defensive game. Jordan Munns made some great leads and despite several attempts was unlucky not to score. It was great to have our goalie back this week. Jordan Kirk did a great job in defence. It’s just unfortunate that when he kicked the ball out of the D it went over heads resulting in a short corner. Thankfully we have a strong defensive team in short corners who ensure that the opposition are unable to convert. Kalamunda played an excellent game and were fortunate enough to secure a well deserved win. The boys now have two weeks off which will give them plenty of time to regroup and channel their focus back into playing their game, whilst spending time at training improving their fitness and teamwork. The Umpire’s Award went to Alex this week for playing a solid defensive game as fullback. Alex was determined in his defence but also showed strength when on two occasions he had the opportunity to run the ball down the field to put us into a scoring position.

Boys 9/10C vs Kalamunda (Lost 0 - 1) Best: J. Cornwall, J. Munns, A. Kelly/J. Kirk The game last week left our boys confidence shattered. This week they needed to shake it off and find the form they started the season with. But with several key players carrying injuries it was going to be difficult to do. Kalamunda fielded a full side and were determined not to go down without a fight. In the first half the boys played a shortened game which resulted in some easy turnovers. When our player had possession of the ball, the team struggled to provide him with support and options. This forced

Boys 7/8A Best: J. Rayfield, B. Hall, H. Edwards Goals: A. Rayfield Our Melville Boys played top of the table Vic Park in a very tough game.Vic Park started well and controlled the early part of the match and went to half time 1-0. The second half was a very even contest with Vic Park scoring 2 more goals. Our defence held up really well to intense pressure and we were really well served by our Goalkeeper Jonathon Rayfield who put in a superb effort. We were good enough to score a goal from a clean short corner and flicked perfectly by Alex Rayfield. Ben Hall was solid in defence and Henry Edwardes provided some flair in the midfield. Good effort boys against a very good team. Girls 7/8A vs Wolves (Drew 1 - 1) Best: Hopkinson, Sommerville, Matthews Goals: B. Anderson Probably our best game for following'the plan'. Some great efforts, Mon S's run without giving up, Sophies tenacity, Nat's run through the middle and of special mention, Emily's efforts in Goal. The question we have to ask ourselves is "Do we want the ball and do we want the ball more than the opposition? Wolves were hungrier. We had 12 entries into the D in the first half but no shots! Back yourselves girls to have a shot, you are all good enough. Boys 7/8A Reserve vs UWA (Lost 0 - 2) Best: Each and Every Player, , This was a fantastic game and each and every player is to be commended for their performance. Although the outcome does not reflect such praise the boys should be very proud of the way they played on the weekend. A change in game time and illness meant the boys were actually down a player (thankfully Daniel the younger brother of Nick was more than happy to assist by taking a high forward position - thank you so much) and the team held off an extremely physical and competitive attack by UWA until the closing five minutes. I think at this point most boys had runout of a little steam. Rather than mention each individual by name I think there is more value in praising the team as a whole for the continued and relentless pressure they placed on UWA. As distinct from previous games where the team has relied on a few players with strong work rates - this week each player took ownership of their position and could be relied upon to demonstrate their skills at every opportunity. All players fought until the bitter end. Although this was not good for the pulse rate of the slightly older spectators I can speak for all when I say we all enjoyed your performance. You are functioning as a team which is a pleasure to watch.

Boys 7/8B Yellow vs Westside Wolves Red (Lost 1 - 8) Best: J. Parker, E. Olivares/Mason, C. Addison Goals: J. Parker Although it was a loss, I hoping you learnt a lot from this game including moving much faster and covering your opposing players. The opposition's skills were very well matched to your own, they just moved faster on the free hits and into their positions. By working on this as a team, we too can get better at this. We were a player down with only 10 on the field and you kept your running up, which was fantastic to see! Girls 7/8B Black vs Wolves (Won 1 - 0) Best: A. Marler, A. Dowsett, M. Brown Goals: C. Dawes We took on Wolves at Vic Park this week and again had most of the play. Unfortunately we only scored one from many opportunities. Aimee-Lee had one bounce off the post that we just couldn't put away. The Wolves goalie was given a good work out. Our first goal was scored from a great turnover play. Although our only goal was in the first half, our hockey was untidy. The second half saw more accurate passing which opened the forward line and resulted in some better looking hockey being played. Well done on the win girls. Boys 7/8C vs Kalumauda (Lost 2 - 5) Best: L. Hill, R. Breuer, B. Gilbert With only eight players on our team this week the outlook looked grim. To the boys credit they still managed two goals, thanks to some great play in the forwards and dedicated defence. Congratulations to Milorad for hitting the two goals. With a full team our boys will be difficult to beat! Girls 7/8C vs Modernians (Lost on forfeit) Girls 7/8 Gold vs Willetton Reds (Lost 1 - 3) Best: C. Sader, R. Vanderzwan, K. Atkinson Goals: K. Atkinson It was our first turf game of the season and we were ready to go. Unfortunately it looked more like a game of "ping pong" as we hit to the opposition too many times making life hard for ourselves. There were many glimpses of good play with Claudia working well up the right wing and Rebecca having a consistent game at half back. This all eventuated in Kate scoring our only goal. With a two week break we can now re-group and start over - we have the talent and next game we can show everyone what this

Page 17: President’s Pen · family atmosphere that we are proud to brag about. Fine wine, good food & drinks at club prices, take advantage of what we offer, get involved, have a night off

17

talent can do! Boys 5/6A vs YMCC (Won 1 - 0) Best: D. Whibley, S. McKinnon, T. Dickson Goals: S. McKinnon A Hard fought win from the boys in what was quite an evenly matched game. Full credit to the boys for taking on board Craig's advice from training and executing it well. Big thanks to Tim and Matt Harvey for filling in today as we struggled with injury worries. Thanks also to Nick who took on the role of goalie and even though he has never done it before showed what a versatile player he is. A diving save was the highlight and it cut off a certain goal and kept them scoreless. The boys have worked on autoplay this week as we knew from last year YMCC like to use it often. We beat them at their own game and showed them a thing or two as well. Sam gave us the winning goal and it was a lovely piece of work. It just shows that if you keep your head in the D and move quickly with purpose, the goals will follow. Well done boys, enjoy a week off if you are not going to Bunbury and lets get charged up and ready for the Wolves on the 11th. Girls 5/6A vs Westside Wolves (Lost 0 - 4) Best: M. Hagen, L. Gleave, Z. Hopkinson We played a very good team and it showed in the first half. They had most of the play but there were encouraging signs in that we often worked the play up the field with passes rather than relying on “hit-and-hope”. In the last 20 minutes of the game the girls were definitely holding their own and Wolves were forced to crowd their defense to keep us out. The forwards then worked hard so that in their 16’s, we were then able to put on pressure and that meant we were playing the game in the right part of the pitch. Yet again, the girls worked hard all the way to the end of the game both in attack and cover-defense. Best players this week were for Molly’s effort, particularly in the last quarter, Lisa did well in coming out at their attackers and Zoe chased continuously Girls 5/6B Black Maroon vs Westside Wolves Grey (Lost 0 - 3) Best: A. Swan, E. Armitage, S. Chisholm It is great to see the team improving each week. The girls are really starting to work together, calling for the ball, running their hearts out and remaining positive - and more importantly, they are hitting nice and wide and getting the ball out to the wing and down to our goals - which is fabulous. Their enthusiasm to swap around with positions, adapt to the changes and have a go is fabulous. Amelia, Alice and Zoe were fantastic getting the ball down our end, with the help of great hits from Eilidh and Rachel who were

consistently hitting the ball nice and wide. Samantha was great in the goals and it was great to see her using her initiative to call out to the girls - well done Samantha. Emma is doing a great job attacking the opposition and staying alert for their next move. Next week our aim is to keep our sticks on the ground and keep getting the ball out nice and wide. Well done girls - its great to see such a happy team starting to use the field well. Girls 5/6B Black White vs Willetton Reds (Won 3 - 0) Best: S. Brown, K. Dumas, E. Donaldson Goals: L. Mellor (2), E. Donaldson The coach ran late this week as her alarm clock failed but arrived in time for the start of the game. The girls were amazing and handled her brief absence with maturity and got on with the task at hand. Willetton Reds were a strong defensive side making our girls work hard for the goals they scored. With some shuffling of positions today, Grace showed she has the strength and stability to become a very good fullback. Poppy and Sophie continue to impress with their ability to step into any position when required, this will be a much sought after ability as the girls progress through the age groups. Our wings were given the task of staying high and wide today, which at times was difficult because it often meant they saw very little play. Stella played an amazing game and found some good positions to receive the ball from the inners which put Willetton on the back foot as she made a dash for our goals. Emma, on the opposite wing, was rewarded with her first goal in a hockey game after a great pass found her all alone. The girls defended well in the second half against a fired up Willetton who were determined to score a goal. Danika we hope your foot is okay it was a great way to stop play as a fullback but I’m sure your stick would’ve been less painful. The amazing footwork from our goalie Emily kept Willetton scoreless. Keep up the great team work girls, your coach has assured me she will be there early next week as she has bought an old-fashioned alarm clock to make sure she gets there on time. Boys 5/6 Regional Black Maroon vs Riverside Lions (Won 6 - 1) Goals: J. Lukan (2), R. Bright, C. Burgess, A. Hall, H. Scurry Another great win Boys! You almost kept them scoreless if not for their PC conversion after the final whistle. Key message - Focus until the end Boys. i25's = 18-2; lots of forward pressure and great work by the half's to keep the ball in our forward half constantly. SoG = 10-1 (great conversion rate) we would have had more goals if not for their goalie making some great saves. (Even with a "flying" Cohen across the goal face).

Thanks to Cohen and Stephen for their efforts today in goal. Thanks Scanners for Umpiring (again). Boys 5/6 Regional Black White vs Rockingham (Lost 0 - 1) 2011-05-14 Best: L. Berry No report Boys 5/6 Regional Black White vs Riverside Lions (Lost 0 - 2) 2011-05-21 No report Boys 5/6 Regional Black White vs Fremantle Black (Lost 0 - 2) 2011-05-28 No report Boys 5/6 Regional Red Maroon vs Melville White (Lost 1 - 3) Goals: C. Surtees An exciting chance for the team to play on turf against Melville white. The game got off to a good start with a strong performance by the forwards who moved the ball well passing and eventually scoring. Despite a strong start, poor position holding and structure in the back line and midfield saw us go down early in the second half, we never really recovered, being unable to move the ball from the backline and midfield. Without Joel in goal I think the scoreline would have been more unfavourable, so good job Joel!. The opposition scored a good break away goal in the final minutes with little resistance from the team. Overall though much improved from our previous games. Everyone agreed the turf was lots of fun! Boys 5/6 Regional Red White Best: T. Harvey, M. Harvey, H. Watkins Goals: T. Harvey, J. Lawrence, H. McKinnon A great win! Need to work on auto play, system passing and improving ball control skills. Great position play and working into the D. Girls 5/6 Regional Black vs Weside Wolves (Won 2 - 1) Best: K. O'Sullivan, B. Miller, H. Jones Goals: B. Miller, K. O'Sullivan The girls played a solid game and really good teamwork resulted in the 2 goals scored and the game being won. Well done girls!!!
