  • 1.0INTRODUCTION

  • 1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDYInternet global system of interconnected computer networks Internet powerful communication technologies and it is rapidly spreading the worldwideLearning become easierThe usage of internet is actually can distract our daily life either it gives good consequences and bad consequences.

  • 1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENTThe usage of Internet becomes a worldwide issue and it seems like to be every people are compulsory to have Internet connection nowadays including university students. According to Kavuk et al. (2011), they stated that people often need computer and Internet to do their daily works such as research, getting information, file transfer, communication and so forth. Some studies have shown that Internet usage can be helpful for students to finish assignments efficiently and effectively (Kim, 2011). However, other researches found out that direct usage of Internet exhibited negative impacts on academic performance (Choi, 2007; Sirgy et al., 2006).

Therefore, in order to deal with the problem as mentioned above, the current research is focused on the pattern of Internet usage among the 3rd year students of chemical engineering course in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. In order to specify and carry out the study, the effect of students academic performance will be analyzed and related to the Internet usage. A few patterns of Internet usage will be studied to measure how far it affects the students academic performance.

  • 1.3RESEARCH OBJECTIVESTo analyze the pattern of internet usage among chemical engineering students in FKK.

To justify students academic performance based on their internet usage and activities.

To determine the students activities on the internet which distract their academic achievement

  • 1.4SCOPE OF STUDYThe 3rd year chemical engineering students of Faculty of Chemical Engineering (FKK).Sample size of the research is 80 respondents from the population of 100 (N) approximately. (ages of 18 and 26 years old) randomly selectedQuestionnaires will be distributed from 2th to 9th May 2015Interview session with the Centre for Information and Communication Technology (CICT UTM)

  • 2.0LITERATURE REVIEW

  • 2.1 USAGE PATTERN OF INTERNETThere are three main parts of usage patterns (Suradi et al, 2008):Usage frequencyUsage duration Usage time

The effects of gender and ethnics was studiedNo significant difference on genderMalay use the internet more frequent than non malay

  • Types of services used by students were education, communication, e-commerce, downloading and entertainment (Suradi et al 2008) Reasons of using internet stated by Bukky (2006) are academic information, email, sport news and pornographic materials. Matthews et al (2003) found that the excessive time spent on the internet resulting in poor academic performance.

  • 2.2PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY INTERNET USERSIn UTM, the authority provides Internet facility through several means such as through Wi-Fi facility and Local Area Network (LAN) connection. Although such Internet facility is provided, students still face difficulty in accessing to the Internet. Bukky (2006) has identified several problems that met by undergraduate students in a university in Nigeria. The problems that Bukky analysed :low speed of the Internet serverinadequate Internet knowledgefinancial problemsinsufficient cyber cafes or Wi-Fi hotspot.

  • A survey of Internet Access and Usage Among Undergraduates in an African University

A total of 1000 questionnaires were distributed to undergraduates of Obafemi Awolowo University, NigeriaRandom sampling used664 questionnaires returned (369 males & 295 females)10 facultiesAge range 17 to 30 years

  • Inadequate Internet knowledge is not regarded as one of the problems as the researchs respondents are students who are literate and equipped with Internet knowledge. Nigeria as developing country likes Malaysia was used as a benchmark since both country faced similar problem.

  • Students Activity on Internet

  • STUDY FINDS LINK BETWEEN FACEBOOK USE, LOWER GRADES IN COLLEGE Aryn Karpinski (2009)Science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and business majors219 students at Ohio State U (87 Males, 132 Females), 102 undergraduate 117 post-graduate students. Of the participants, 148 said they had a Facebook account. Facebook users in the study had GPAs between 3.0 and 3.5, while non-users had GPAs between 3.5 and 4.0.In addition, users said they averaged one to five hours a week studying, while non-users studied 11 to 15 hours per week.Karpinski said it was significant that the link between lower grades and Facebook use was found even in post-graduate students. She said that post-graduate students generally have GPAs above 3.5, so the fact that even they had lower grades when they used Facebook - and spent less time studying was an amazing findingConclusion, FB is huge distraction

Karpinski, A. (2006). A description of Facebook use and academic performance among undergraduates and graduates students

  • We cant say that use of Facebook leads to lower grades and less studying but we did find a relationship there,

said Aryn Karpinski, co-author of the study and a doctoral student in education at Ohio State University

  • 3.0METHODOLOGY

  • 3.1 RESEARCH INSTRUMENTSQuestionnaire20 questions - 4 sectionsBackground informationPattern of internet usageComments for the proper manner of internet usageDifferent question-types ( ranking, yes-no, scales ) Will be piloted to a group of 10 students to access validity
