At STRL, we are moving forward with research on video analysis technology for automatic extraction of different kinds of information from television (TV) video to enable the effective use of archived video for advanced support of program production. This presentation was on a face recognition technique for identifying persons in TV video. A method that obtains a certain degree of recognition accuracy, even under the varying lighting conditions and changes in actor expressions and face orientation in TV video, was described.
The use of an IP network in broadcasting facilities is expected to enable the transmission of various kinds of signals over a single network and to simplify and increase the efficiency of configuring the production system. In this presentation, the technology for introducing IP network technology into the program production system that is currently being researched at STRL was described. This technology includes a “Resource Provider” for sharing production resources among multiple studios and increasing the efficiency of operations.
“Audio Descriptions,” which allows visually impaired persons to enjoy TV programs, requires a lot of manual works in production. At STRL, we are moving forward with research on technology of computer-generating “Automated Audio Descriptions,” which uses real-time data about the sports events. In this presentation, two steps consisting the technology were explained. They are composing textual explanations and conveying them vocally with a speech synthesizer. The experimental results conducted at the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games were also presented.
Organic electroluminescence displays have the advantages of excellent response speed and high contrast ratio. However, their color purity is not sufficient owing to the broad emission spectrum of organic compounds, especially for the color green. In this presentation, the demonstration of an efficient green OLED with very high color purity by employing a novel emitter material and a new device structure was explained.
STRL has been researching integral three-dimensional (3D) television as a new broadcasting service for the future. However, there are problems in achieving a high-quality 3D visualization for 3D scenes with substantial depth because of the restricted depth reconstruction range with the 3D displays. In this presentation, the possibility of achieving the natural, high-quality 3D visualization even for 3D scenes with greater depth than the display’s depth reconstruction capabilities by virtually expanding the depth range based on human spatial cognition characteristics was explained.
Full-featured 8K Super Hi-Vision is the ultimate format of 8K system. At STRL, image sensors that can operate the frame frequency of 120 Hz and a three-chip full-featured 8K camera have been developed. In this presentation, an image sensor for a single-chip portable camera system that was developed toward practical full-featured 8K cameras was described. The experimantal results were also explained.
