    Position Papers In a Nutshell

So, you have a topic. Heres how the Position Paper should go:

    1. Introduction Heres what the issue is, and the history of things that involve theissue (a summary of the development of the issue, resolutions that have been past,

etc.).a. An introduction should not include:

    i. Any opinion in any way. Just facts relating to the introduction and

    history of the issue.

ii.Anything involving your country. We shouldnt even know what your

    country is at this point.

iii.Anything that should be in Current Status. Make sure that you leave

the things that are presently going on to the Current Status. This is

    actually pretty delicate.

    2. Countrys Background The nation of _____ has typically supported (or opposed)measures that would have ______. Perhaps this is due to [some event going on in the

    country].

    a. The Countrys Background should not include:

    i. A brief history of your nation.

ii.Anything involving your nation that does not very directly relate tothe topic of discussion.

    1. For example: Say the issue is Nuclear Energy. Iran, becausethey very directly relate to the problem, will be able to say that

because they are attempting to develop Nuclear Energy, and

should be allowed to do so, just as other nations should. It

would not be appropriate for the Dominican Republic to say so

based on their experience, because, last time I checked there

wasnt any Nuclear Energy program there.

iii.Anything about your nations relations with other countries that

doesnt directly relate to their position on the issue.

    3. Current Status Heres whats going on right now with this issue on the globalscene. Effectively, heres why were talking about it.

    a. Current Status should not include:

    i. Anything about your country unless it directly relates to the issue.

ii.Anything general about the current events on the international scene,

unless it directly affects the magnitude of the issue.

    4. Proposal of Actions & Solutions The nation of ______ feels that ___________. So, thenation of ___________ would support (or oppose) a measure that [does something].

    a. Proposal of Actions & Solutions should not include:

    i. Any opinion other than that of your nation. When you do this, keep in

mind that you have to put the republic of (or whatever the official

name is) _____ feels that The only time you dont have to put that is

when you can prove what you are saying as fact.

    5. Conclusion To conclude, the nation of ______ feels that this is a topic of greatimportance. It is necessary to address this issue in a timely manner, and the nation of

______ hopes that we can begin to work together on a solution that would include:

(what your country wants to do). Keep in mind that you are trying to get countries to

support your ideas, and this is where you would do it.

    a. Conclusions should not include:

    i. Any information not previously discussed.
