Building the department store of tomorrow, today.

We’ve allocated

$263 million to upgrade Omnichannel technologies.

We’re proud of our successes, and we recognize that a vibrant future means expanding the ways we do business, setting the pace in an industry that’s all about setting trends.

The retail landscape continues to change, and our aim is to be at the front of it. The future of our business depends on technology, which is why we’re focusing so much in this area: roughly half of the company’s invested capital. New devices mean new points of sale and new opportunities. Following our customers’ online shopping trends makes for more efficient merchandising and planning. And for retailers of our scale, maintaining a complete and accessible online presence is more important than ever.

We need people who have the expertise to put these technologies into play.

This is a place where creative minds are ignited with rigorous academics and real-world experiences, all to develop a strong sense of self, a clear path to success, and a sisterhood of support that lasts a lifetime.

When we say creative minds, we’re not just referring to writers, artists, designers — although we have many of those here. We’re talking about anyone who’s ever felt a charge to push themselves beyond preconceived limits. Anyone who’s ever looked at a problem, and said, “I bet there’s a solution to this, and I’m going to find it.” Anyone who’s ever looked at the traditional path, and then decided to forge her own way.

In February, the Hollins community gathers to honor the life and work of the university’s founder, Charles Lewis Cocke.

After the senior class and a member of the Hollins community place a wreath on his grave, the day concludes with a campus-

wide convocation featuring a distinguished speaker.

It’s one of our most cherished traditions — a night of fun skits and overflowing gift baskets, where seniors secretly adopt junior sisters and present them with

their class rings.

It’s a moving event and one of our oldest traditions. The Concert Choir and Chamber Singers welcome the holiday season with time-honored songs, and a generous offering is given to local, national, and global

service organizations. Its name is derived from the white dresses students used to wear during the ceremony.

LEARNING FROM THE PROS.Each year, Hollins’s Jackson Center for Creative Writing brings acclaimed authors and poets to campus for readings, talks, and workshops with students through our writer-in-residence program. It’s a cornerstone of our creative writing program and a true privilege for any aspiring writer. Two of our recent guests were novelist Karen Osborn ʼ79 (standing, left) and U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Natasha Trethewey M.A. ̓91.

TAKE TO THE STAGE. Our nationally recognized theatre program delves into every aspect of theatre production, from acting and design to stage management and technical production. Between course work and a host of productions, students develop the skills and creativity to stand center stage and also learn what it takes behind the scenes to make a production a success.

INVESTIGATE. DISCOVER. SHARE YOUR FINDINGS. The Science Seminar is a staple of the spring semester and an occasion for the Hollins community to join together and commend undergraduate research. During the campus-wide event, students present posters summarizing independent research initiatives in psychology, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and environmental studies, and faculty members have an opportunity to offer up worthy praise and insightful feedback.

OUR STUDENTS’ CAREER ASPIRATIONS ARE ENDLESSLY DIVERSE, AND SO ARE THE WAYS THEY’LL ACHIEVE SUCCESS IN THEIR LIVES. This is why career preparation at Hollins takes on many different forms—internships, workshops, and everything in between. What’s more, these opportunities enrich one another as part of our interconnected Career Compass program, and are available to students throughout their time here.

It’s these experiences that give our students the confidence and perspective to put their professional lives in motion, and to go boldly where their passions lead them, whether that’s a boardroom, a classroom, or a research lab. Hollins graduates leave with a focused mindset and the capacity to set themselves apart as articulate, imaginative, and engaged leaders.

And, because of our ever-growing and engaged alumnae network, Career Compass is much more than a four-year program. Alumnae will guide you during your time at Hollins, and in the years following graduation, they’ll continue driving you to succeed, just as those who came before you have. After all, women who are going places start at Hollins.

Hollins prepares its students for successful professional lives. This is one of the university’s strongest narratives, but the way it was being told lacked cohesiveness. In collaboration with another writer, I bundled Hollins many career preparation offerings under a unified name: Career Compass. In addition, I wrote these sample pieces promoting the program. MAKING YOUR WAY AthensLEARN ON THE LEADING EDGE. When you’re not mastering the tools physicians are using today, you’ll be navigating a replicate operating theater and emergency room, with high-tech manikins than can be programmed to simulate any number of conditions.

LINK UP FROM ANYWHERE. Our campus sites are spread across Ohio, but here, your learning environment isn’t defined by distance or location. With our large- screen videoconferencing system, you can study with world-renowned physicians, participate in lectures across the state, access the resources of affiliate health care systems, and connect to your fellow students in Dublin and Cleveland.

You’ll gain a comprehensive overview of anatomy early on. From there, you’ll master high-resolution imaging devices that reveal the body’s complex structures in real time.

CARING FOR OUR NEIGHBORS. The same gift from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation that gave our college its name also led to the expansion of the Heritage Community Clinic. Staffed by our faculty physicians, it’s open to southeastern Ohio residents who need care the most, and provides free and low-cost care, including health screenings and immunizations, diabetes treatment, and other specialty care.

Each year our students log more than 4,500 volunteer hours, gaining firsthand insight into primary care, and experiencing the difference they can make in the lives of individuals, and across whole communities.

“My time in the classroom and in the clinic has made me a better caregiver because it has taught me—among other things—that patient care is a collaborative effort. It takes nurses, medical assistants, physicians, and administrators to provide a patient with the best possible care. Medicine isn’t a one-person show.”

CROSS EVERY BOUNDARYCommunity Outreach and Study Abroad

CARE WHERE IT’S NEEDED. Like every other state, Ohio is home to many medically underserved communities. At the Heritage College, you’ll help meet the needs of these populations. Whether it’s through our mobile clinics, which serve 17 counties, or the care we provide to the communities we’re based in, you can help administer free breast cancer and blood pressure screenings, childhood immunizations, and sports physicals.

Medicine isn’t limited by borders, and neither is our curriculum. Here at the Heritage College, your studies will lead you down the road and across the world. To a hospital in downtown Cleveland or Columbus. To a community clinic in southeastern Ohio. Maybe as far away as Botswana or Ecuador. Why? Because our students find that lessons learned in new environments translate into new perspectives on what must be done in their local communities.

21

SERVING THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST.The Rural and Urban Scholars Pathways program engages students who are formally looking to focus their medical career in underserved communities, both rural and urban. Through firsthand clinical experience and individualized education planning, students learn how to tackle these communities’ most pressing health care needs, and make a real difference, every day.

STUDY ABROAD, MAKE A DIFFERENCE HERE. Whether you’re interested in practicing medicine in other parts of the world or you just want to see health care from a global perspective, look into our international programs. Every year, our students fan out across the globe to conduct research, take part in workshops, and receive clinical training.

“As a rising second-year student I traveled to Botswana to work alongside local health care teams and other medical students. Studying and practicing there allowed me to see medicine in a more global light and opened my eyes to new approaches to care. While many countries lack the medical resources we have here in the United States, that isn’t stopping them from tackling their most pressing health needs. We have a lot to learn from those communities of health beyond our borders.”

MAKE AND SHARE DISCOVERIES. After completing your first year of studies, you’ll be invited to apply for one of our most prestigious summer programs— the Research and Scholarly Advancement Fellowship. This ten-week program focuses on an in-depth faculty-led research project, designed to engage students in the experience of scientific and clinical investigation.

MULTIPLY YOUR CAPACITY TO HEAL.Building on our D.O./Ph.D. dual degree-curriculum, the Heritage College now offers the state’s first translational biomedical sciences program. This interdisciplinary program teams graduate students with faculty mentors from two disciplines. The ultimate goal: turning research discoveries into diagnostic tools, medicines, procedures, and education that benefit the health of the community.

AMPLIFY YOUR PASSION FOR CARE. Osteopathic care can play a transformative role in helping kids grow healthy and strong. Likewise, the value of the immersive learning that comes from teaching alongside mentors makes a profound impact on a student’s career trajectory. Just ask the eight candidates who are accepted each year into the OMM and Family Medicine Predoctoral Associateships.

REACH NEW HEIGHTSResearch and Leadership

Here, your required course of study is only the beginning. Between fellowships and summer programs, national medical associations and student government—even pursuing a dual degree—you’ll find many ways to take your education even further. A spirit of collaboration inspires our students to pursue their passions relentlessly, and along the way to improve the whole state of medicine. These programs are just a start.

FULFILL A LEGACY.Albert Schweitzer showed the world how health care can improve life for even the most underserved, and since 1940, the Schweitzer Fellowship has empowered graduate students to propagate this idea. Our recipients have educated at-risk populations about the effects of smoking and the chronic diseases associated with obesity, and most of all, seen firsthand what happens when they put learning into practice.

BE HEARD. TAKE THE LEAD.Attending the Heritage College is one thing. But if you want to shape the college and transform it too, the Student Government Association may be your calling. You can provide your fellow students a strong voice and a clear say in matters affecting the curriculum, all while engaging the greater campus community. But beyond politics, the SGA is an effective way to strengthen knowledge in your field, connect with your peers, and gain leadership skills, here and beyond.

GET INVOLVED WHEREVER YOU STAND.Whether it’s the American Medical Student Section, the Ohio State Medical Association, or the dozens of other student organizations found across all three Heritage College locations, you’ll gain access to rich experiences that connect you with peers and mentors alike.

“This place is more than a professional school; it’s a family. I am proud to be a part of this school. The training here is some of the top in the country. Our board scores are significantly above the national average, we are heading to our rotations feeling prepared, and we had so much fun along the way. I would not change where I went to medical school if someone paid me to.”
