For twelve weeks during my fourth year, I was given theopportunity to try traditional design. For the program, I chose to re-create the appellate courthouse that is located Elgin, Illinois and torelocate it to a more downtown location. Part of the studio focus

was on new urbanism, so I combined the courthouse, a building used bya select few, with some urbanistic principals in order to create a more

active space. This included master site-planning and the addition of anew city square to front the courthouse. The plan also provided forthe addition of some mixed-use shopping venues built into the exteriorfabric of the courthouse.

Another part of this project was to incorporate and exploresustainable technology. By using a pre-cast concrete structural system,my new courthouse had good thermal mass for cooling and warming.Natural day lighting was also a focus in my design, and the building

made use of interior light wells that would not only bring in light, butalso help with cross-ventilation.

Jared has an unquestioned reputation of integrity among his peers and in allmy interactions with him over many years. He has demonstrated leadership even in

    situations requiring courage.

He is one of the most affable persons and generous team-players in my

    experience.

Jared is a talented designer with high standards for achieving competency: the

Boston City Hall proposal demonstrates his capacity to take on a complex site, with

a multi-layered program, a design partner for another building in the ensemble, a

real commitment to forward-thinking sustainable building design, in a design that is

contextually sensitive to the local building culture.

Jared has more knowledge and interest in how buildings go together than most

students or even recent architecture graduates; having long experience in practice

myself, I know this is a valued factor in architecture rms. His skill with digital tools, both number of software applications and drawing quality, is obvious from his work and

further evidenced in his professional experience teaching these tools to others.

I recommend Jared Natalino without reservation.

For my graduate year studio course, I recreated Bostons City

Hall and its surrounding plaza. One of the main goals of the projectwas to find and identify the problems created by the existing City Halland try to solve those problems with a new design. I believed that theexisting buildings mass did not work on the site and the style of thebuilding did not appropriately represent the civic character of the citygovernment. Boston residents have naturally become disconnectedfrom the building because of the way it misrepresents the character ofthe government and the city it is supposed to symbolize.

My proposal looked to find a style that provided a civic presencefor the city, while also looking into sustainable solutions. The buildingis naturally ventilated and lit through the use of large atriums and

adequate windows. A public market was integrated into the main floorof the building in an attempt to create a building that is more diverse inits programing and engaging to the public.

Ihave had the privilege to know Jared in both aprofessional and scholarly atmosphere, and he excelsat both. Professionally, Jared has enough drive andattention to detail to handle anything placed in hiscare, as well as having the added bonus of being flexiblein response to the demands others might put on him.

Academically, Jared can pursue an idea, and all itsnuances, until brought to full fruition. In tandem, thesestrengths lead Jared to be able to deliver idealisticallystrong product in appropriate time frames...which notmany can say.

Jared is the rare designer that is ascomfortable building digital models of buildings asas he is building the real thing. His constructionexperience informs his thoughtful approach todesigning and detailing spaces; he always looksahead to what needs to be done next...and startsdoing it. His professional manner and absolutelypositive demeanor allowed me to have completeconfidence in his managing of consultants,

studio Talo is a small firm working out of Evanston, Illinois.Studio Talos goal is to create projects that reflect the desires of its

clients, while introducing sustainable principles whenever possible. Ilearned a lot working at Studio Talo because I was able to take projectsfrom schematic design to on-site construction administration. StudioTalo helped me mature professionally and taught me how to manageprojects and work with clients, contractors, and other consultants on

a daily basis. I had the privilege to work on both residential and small-

    scale commercial projects.
