The challenge set by Sonywas to design a product, or

products, which could cracktechnology obsolescence andensure the products value tothe user or a lietime.

The project was oered to Brunel design students anda group o seven o us decided to work together on it.

We worked with Sony as design consultants

developing the work over a period o our months. Wesplit the design work between us to maximising ourindividual strengths.

In this project the initial idea o a Core productwas mine and my main role was to supervise theproduction o communication materials with thirdparties.

Project: Intuitive water pump or AricaStudent work : Final year major project

goalTo replace broken pumpswhich have working boreholesto make use o this hugeinvestment.

1 in 3Pumps in Arica are broken. Some studies suggest pumpsare breaking aster than theyare being put in.

$1000The minimum cost to provide aborehole or a pump to accesswater in dry areas.

    10/33

Signifcant time andeort went into thedevelopment o a set oinstructions that would beunderstood by Aricans.

    As the were not the

resources to do this inArica a series o testswere created or samplegroups in the UK to tryand obtain inormationwhich would be useuldespite the culturaldierence.

The design o the pumpitsel was complicatedby the need to havethe components andmanuacturing locallysourced in Arica.

The design developmentocused mainly on tryingto improve the waterextraction technique andexperimenting with locallyavailable materials.

The project had two main ocuses: theproduction o a working pump suitable orthe environment and the creation o a systemo instructions to allow users in Arica toassemble and maintain the product.

  • 7/28/2019 Portfolio, James Burchill, 03/07/2013

    11/33

The output o theproject producedthree main results.

A set o rules was produced with detailed instructionswhich would allow more instructions to be created,

especially how to construct or repair the system. Thesewere created through repeated testing o dierentinstructional techniques.

A pump was also designed which could take all itsrequired components rom locally available materials

and be constructed using local tools and skills. This isa massive improvement over many pumps which relyon imported technology and components.

The fnal achievement was proving that the designcould unction and with urther development extract

enough water to eed a real need.

    Rule 2Changingangle

The ruleIf youmust changeperspectiveorrotatetheproduct, itsbest todo it through procedural images of therotation.

Changing theview stepby stepkeeps peoples orientationwith theproduct andreduces thechances of mistakes.

This principlecanalso beapplied if youneedtozoom ontheobject infora extendedpart of theinstructions,If youneedtocontinueshowing theconstructionof theproductat acloserview point.

    Recommendations

Youshouldnot needmorethanfour photos toconvey atransitionunless it is particularly complicated.Aftershowingonetransitionyoucanreducethe numberof steps showingthetransitionif it is repeated.

Whenshowing transitions donot show theobject revolving

purely onits own.Its moreadvisableto show humansmoving it inthe pictures as seenhere.

Zoom images requires only twoimages;onebeforezooming andone afterthezoom. Both shouldbetakenfrom thesameangleandof thesame content.

    Rule 3Oneprocessper image

    The ruleOnly completeoneprocess perimage.

By only having oneprocess perimagetheinstructions aremuch less likely mis interpreted. Each imagehas only onething tocommunicateandso individuals fndeasier tonoticewhat is going onineach image.

This alsogoes orrepetitivetasks. Forexampledo nottry toshow multiplescrews being placedin oneimagejust becausethey arethesameprocess. This canleadtoindividuals missing components ornot perceiving everyscrew.

    Recommendations

Whentaking pictures o processes donot expect users todoanything they havenot beeninstructedtodo. An imageo anut on ascrew threadis not enough tocommunicatethat nut must bedoneup.

    Rule 4Propertool use

The ruleWhenshowing instructions relating toprocesses suchas tightening screws, show procedural images toimplydirectiono movement.

By adding twophotos insteado onetoshow ausertightening upanut it is moreeectiveinimproving usersuseo tools. Many users oregotheuseo tools andjust usefngers i not properly instructed.

    Recommendations

Whentaking photos try tomakethe movement asunambiguous as possible.Inthetwo adjacent picturesyoucansee thearm clearly moveclockwise. This canbeunderstoodrom theimages becauseit wouldbe highlyunlikely orthearm togo rom thefrst steptothesecond inacounterclockwisemanner.

Inprocesses requiring precisionorsmall amounts o orcethis methodcanalso beused tocommunicateaneedoragentle touch. This is doneby showing pictures o verysmall movements which helpcommunicatethe needordelicacy..

    Rule 1Perspectiveof photos

The ruleWhen taking photos, try to takepictures from a consistentperspectivewhich only varies by small degrees.

It is also important to not changethecropping of thephoto andstay at asingle zoom setting.

Doing this helps peoplestay orientatedwith theprocess.Changing angleof view abruptly can lead to confusionresulting in errors in construction.

RecommendationsTakephotos form a3/4perspectiveto theproduct. It allowsthemost visibility.

When taking photos try to includehumans in the imagebecauseit also provides referenceto both scaleandorientation.

Usea consistent platform orset forthe process becausethis also aids orientation.

Pick yourscaleafter looking through all components andprocesses involvedin theassembly.Being croppedtoowidecan causeproblems if the project has many smallcomponents.

Hex was a design exercise to replace the QR code with a better alternative. The QR code has numerousproblems which has resulting in poor usage by the public and improper use by advertisers. The goal was tocreate a code which could supply the same unctionality as a QR code but targeting some o the problemareas by improving its unctionality and visual appeal

    research design refnement

The development o Hex ollowed two paths: the creation o a code which would theoretically work, and the development o icons to communicate the type o media the code would lead to. This wasshown to be important by user research because users never knew what type o content they werebeing connected to, leading to an apathy over using QR codes.

Hex eventually evolved into the graphicseen here. A small library o icons wascreated to represent the dierent types omedia accessed through QR codes. The concept was completely based onhow QR codes work and as such wouldwork with custom scanners.

Hex had a measurable improvement overQR codes in these actors:

    - It supports analytics providing accurateinormation on who uses Hex and where.

    -Its shape can be customised

-It requires a smaller amount o space tounction

    - It provides pictorial inormation on whatthe content it provides at a glance.

    Common Persona Themes

After looking into potential future personas within the

emergency services and looking into problems that each

individual sector has, it is key to begin to evaluate. By

evaluating the personas and picking out the key issues and

problems that are common amongst all of them you can

begin to build up a better understanding of areas that POC

would need to address. The evaluation of the personas gives

us the common values that each of these people embody

and problems that all of these people face on an almost

The products redesignwas based aroundlooking at types o gripand preexisting solutionssuch as easy grip drilland screw drivers. It wasaided by the creation olow fdelity models to testusers responses.

This was the fnal designthat was developed. It didnt solve all the

problems in the HTA butwas able to improve uponthose rated to be mostimportant to the user.

The existing layout and design o the icons was poor. The vacuum icon usedon the product did not communicate its meaning and was replaced witha icon stylised like a tornado which is similar to some existing products. Themapping was also improved so that the button would sit beneath the icon it

    was initiating.

The design improvements ocused on the shape, as this would resolve anumber o complaints discovered in the HTA. Also improved were the icondesign and mapping as it was currently lacking clarity. Finally a standardisedtest by Elvin Karana was used to evaluate the material and decide on a moreemotionally satisying material to produce the product in.

B I G N EW S: G RE EN WO O D I SFINALLY LEAVING BRUNEL! Yesfolks it is true, I am actually leavingBrunel after a fair few years. As astudent it was amazing and as astudent officer,it has been superbwith many ups and a few downs.

There havebeen some absolutelysublime moments such at the

demonstration and achievingthe sports strategy. I have metsome great people along theway, but I have also met my fairshareof clowns. This balance ofpeople is why being a studentofficer is so great, you can educateas well as being supported onyour campaigns. I would alwaysrecom mend anyone goingfor election because it a greatexperience and a cracking C.V.builder. You are always learningand when I first cameinto the jobI didnt have a cluehow to do it

(and somewould say I still dont)and this is wheremy first thankyou comes in.

UBS staffI saluteyou. Throughyour great training and supportit has developed myself and theother student officers into whatweare today, always fighting thestudents corner.

My second goes to all thepart timers (Sam Middlewoodexcluded) and chairs ofthe Union, especially my sports chairs. Youguys have had a tough timehavingto work with me,but I thinkwe got though it really well in theend, and there will always betimefor a students activities tequila.

To the student officers, it hasbeen immense workingwith youguys. You arethe best collegesanyone could ask for. I hopewehavepassed on all the knowledgewe can to the new lot (they

dont know what they are lettingthemselves in for, but we werenever goingto tell them that).

But my biggest thanks go to allthestudents who I havemet andhavesupport meth rough my timein office. It wouldnt havebeen thesame without you guys (becausesomeoneelse would havegot it!!).

So what is the futurefor me?Well I might become a studentagain doing a masters (dontworry not at Brunel),o r I mighthit thebig bad world and get a

job. I think that optimises how Ihavechanged at Brunel and whatI think ofuniversity life and I shallend it with a quote.
