A-C Central High School and Eldridge Plays will be presenting No Signs of Intelligent Life No- vember 8 and 9 at 7pm at the high school. This comedy by Bryan Starchman features over 30 students and exam- ines awkward human habits from the perspec- tive of aliens that are living among us. If you think you’ve suffered too many awkward moments or been in the dark in conversations, just think how poor, innocent aliens feel! Hungry to fit in, they do and say things that we humans aren't allowed to. Join in the laughter as these extraterrestrials meet all kinds of humans -- teenagers, rednecks, survivalists and the most enigmatic, tech support nerds. Will these hap- less aliens be able to figure out the daily rituals of dating, gossiping at the water cooler, camping, or even fixing our computers? The aliens have the knowledge to increase food production, create alternative energies, and achieve world peace. Are Earthlings the intelligent life they seek to bestow these gifts? More important, could Earthlings help the aliens get home again?! *Please note, if the football team advances to the second round of playoffs, the per- formance times and date may need to be adjusted to ac- commodate the game. The final competition for the Marching Knights of A-C Central was the Mardi Gras Parade in Pinckneyville IL on Oct. 26 at 7 PM. This night parade has become one of the students’ favorites. The parade kicks off with fireworks and is followed by 15 bands and floats that are all lights! It is quite a spectacle to see! The Marching Knights swept their class in this competition! Placings are as follows: Class A 1st – A-C 2nd – Elsberry HS 3rd – Sesser-Valier HS Outstanding Drum Major – A-C Outstanding Color Guard – A-C Outstanding Drum Line – A- C

It has been and out-standing season for the Marching Knights! The young musicians have lots to be proud of….their hard work has paid off in accolades!

The A-C Central FFA had a wonderful turn out for the FFA Labor Auction. The FFA members were auctioned off to different community members. The community support of our program and for this event was tremendous. The A-C Central FFA members would like to say a BIG thank you to everyone who came and supported the members. The FFA members are very fortunate to have a supportive Alumni and community. We look for-ward to carrying on the labor auction as an an-nual event. Again, a HUGE THANK YOU to eve-ryone who helped make this night a success.

The Porta/A-C Central Lady Jays volleyball team raised $2,400 for the Susan G. Komen Volley for the Cure. The seniors and their parents organized a wonderful and well attended dinner and raffled several pink items. Army Brats Apparel (owner Jason Burris) and West Central Bank both made generous donations for the cause as well. The money is sent to the Peoria affiliate then redistributed back to our local counties for research, education, treatment, preventive check ups, and other things funded by local community health grants . GREAT JOB to the seniors and all other par-ticipants. The volleyball team would like to thank everyone who helped make the night a success!

AN INTERVIEW WITH TIM PAGE Superintendent of A-C Central Schools

Name: Tim Page Age: 46 Education: - Millikin University - Bachelors in Music Education - University of Illinois – M.S. in Music Education - University of Illinois – C.A.S. in Educational Leader-ship Family: Married to Molly with 4 children: Collin, Mi-chael, Rachel and Jack ages 17 to 6. I live in what might as well be a zoo with a dog, 2 cats, 3 lizards, goldfish and a tree frog!

What drew you to apply for the position of Superintendent at A-C Central? I’ve wanted to sit in the Superintendent’s chair for several years. When the position at A-C opened up, and I researched the school district, I saw a strong school district with a community that truly cared about quality education. It seemed like an ideal place to work. What are your initial impressions of the school and the communities? A-C is full of great people. The school has been fearless in pursuing and embracing technology in or-der to provide the best they can for the students. This type of forward thinking is unusual in small rural school districts and the passion that everyone has for quality is inspiring to see. Now that you are a few months in, how has it been working with the school board and staff at A-C Cen-tral? There is always a steep learning curve when stepping into a new position and in a new environment. I have truly enjoyed getting to know the school board, the teachers and the staff at A-C. As I said ear-lier, there is a high degree of commitment to excellence here and it is rooted in true concern for what’s best for the kids and the community as a whole. It’s been a great place to be. What do you see as the strengths of the school? The strengths of A-C are in its willingness to go out on a limb and be a leader in education despite our small size. There is a passion among these stake-holders to do what is best for the kids. These strengths are priceless in a world where we are constantly being told to do more with less and when the state is constantly giving us a moving target to shoot at. What are the principal challenges faced by the school? I believe the challenges here are primarily two-fold. The first challenge is find a way to continue provid-ing a quality education to our kids despite dwindling financial resources from the state. The second challenge as I see it is to examine the issues facing our two facilities and make decisions regarding these buildings that will serve these communities best in the long term. What programs have been added or reduced? When I came to A-C I believe we had just dropped some industrial art classes, and we had moved a Title/RtI teacher into the regular classroom. We have done our best to work within our schedule and provide similar opportunities for the kids despite these cuts. As far as additions, we have not renewed a co-op returning several athletic programs to the middle school which I think have been very exciting for the kids and the community. What programs do you see as being added or reduced in the future? I have no specifics at this time, but I don’t see further reductions in our immediate future. I will add pro-grams as I find ways to fund programs, or rework our current set ups to allow for more opportunities for our kids.

Page 16: November 2013 - Ashland Scoop Newsletter

What is the current status of state funding? The state hasn’t been healthy for a long time. This isn’t anything new. The latest news is that the state is currently anticipating lowering the General State Aid proration level from 89% this year to 85% next year. Without writing a dis-

sertation on how all this works, it boils down to this likely being a $65,000 cut to our annual revenue. This doesn’t begin to address the is-sue of pension reform which is and will con-tinue to be a political hot potato and potential Illinois Constitution problem for years to come. We will have to look for more and more creative ways to find new money – most likely through new private grant opportunities in the future. If you had more funding, what would you do with the money? I would hire more teachers to allow us to expand our curriculum and schedule flexibility. I would put money into our facilities to be sure they are state of the art, and our technological infrastructure supports the ever growing demand of our digital curriculum. What is the status of the new sports programs at the school? I think that the bringing of middle school sports back to A-C like we have done has been ex-tremely successful. Hopefully, this is something that we can grow back into our high school in the near future. How would you like to see the community more involved with the school? I would love to see community groups step up and simply make themselves available to start after school programs for tutoring, mentoring young kids, and even fundraising. Money isn’t the answer to every problem (though it helps!) We need bodies and ideas to make public education work at its best. This is best done locally! What is your vision for the future of the A-C Central School District? I want to see a school that truly prepares kids for life after graduation, whether that future in-volves a four year college, two year college, a technical school, or straight into the work force. We need people prepared for life, who understand the duties and responsibilities of being a good citizen, having good character and work habits, and realize the importance of community. A-C Central needs to provide opportunities and programs that meet our stu-dents’ current needs, whatever they are, and then helps them make wise choices for the fu-ture – in every aspect of their lives. Our communities need well-prepared, well-rounded indi-viduals who make positive contributions to society throughout their life. What is the best part of your job as Superintendent at A-C Central? The best part of being Superintendent is working with great people towards the common goal of doing what’s best for the kids under our roof. I want to have a hand in preparing them for their futures, and for the future of our communities and country. I enjoy working to have a positive impact on all the students and staff, and thinking that I made a difference in their lives. It’s a good feeling.
