Importance of Grassroots in

the Modern Era By: Eric Anderson

The importance of grassroots efforts in our modern eracannot be understated. With the wealth of new technologiesavailable, the potential impact of grassroots movement has in-creased immensely. Additionally, the ability of grassroots ef-forts to quickly respond and interact with members of a move-ment has brought grassroots campaigns into a new era of adapt-ability. Put simply, grassroots movements are in a stage of growing power, making them a force to be reckoned with astheir potential utility is harnessed.

Recent years have seen new technologies and social

media innovations play important roles in historic internationalevents. These new capacities have aided victims of crises, docu-mented national uprisings and responded to the reaching of mo-mentous milestones. These new technologies have allowed for vastly increased connection and communication, which are twoelements that largely power grassroots movements. As thesenew technologies continue to be innovated, refined and utilized,the power of the grassroots movements can be expected to growas well. Consequently, grassroots efforts have a powerful toolmoving forward; a tool that will only continue to grow.

While the increase in connectivity and communicationmay benefit the organization of grassroots movements, there isalso something to be said for a movements’ ability to hear fromits supports and adapt accordingly. New social media technolo-gies only improve this, as movement organizers can now en-gage in direct dialogue with the people who make a movement possible. Supporters are the lifeblood of any grassroots move-ment, and new technologies offer organizers the opportunity todirectly embrace these people and work hand in hand with themto move an effort forward.

As social media technologies continue to improve, wecan expect the prospects and impact of grassroots movements toimprove in chorus. The wave of new technologies will havewide ranging influences on a number of different areas, andgrassroots movements is one of the areas that is primed to bene-fit the most from this upsurge of technology.

What are your goals? – To raise $25,000 per year inorder to hold pizza & politics meetings, educate and en-courage grassroots participation through precinct delegaterecruitment and support the Pat Carpio Scholarship fund.Encourage and support interns and develop an interactivewebsite and social network. We do these things because it

is “We the People” who have the voice.

Where are you getting your funding from? – Donationsfrom grassroots supporters such as Jane Abraham, Peter Cook, Douglas and Maria DeVos, Dan and Pam DeVos,John and Phyllis Haggard, Ed and Susan Haroutunian,Jim Duistermars, Ann and Tom McCleary, Bill Womer,and Chuck Yob to name just a few.

What is your timeline? – GrassrootsUSA.net is a 527organization and is based on a yearly schedule (January – December). Our goal is to raise $25,000 per year.

What are your benchmarks? – We try to raise dollarscontinuously throughout the year. We like to have raised$10,000 by April 1st of each year.

How will a donor know you are successful? – They cancheck on our more interactive website: Grass-rootsUSA.net. We are also connected on Facebook andTwitter. We also try to generate 4 newsletters per year.The newsletter can be mailed to donors if they choose. Itis also available on our website.

What research do you have to support the need? – Be-ing involved with the political process is an everydaything. For example; by monitoring how many precinctdelegate slots are filled and how many are unfilled knowwhat the needs are and in which locations. Local elec-tions, State elections, and National elections just to namea few of the processes we are involved with.

Do you have partners? – We network with grassroots people in the state of Michigan.

What specifically do you want to support? - The mis-sion of GrassrootsUSA.net is simple – to educate and en-courage grassroots participation in the political process.All citizens, regardless of their views, need to be in-volved, because at the end of the day government has adirect impact on our lives – not matter which side wins.One of the best ways to encourage grassroots participa-tion is to recruit precinct delegates. We also supportscholarship funds such as the Pat Carpio Scholarshipfund.

Do you have a long-range plan? – To continue to en-courage people to get involved in politics at the grassrootslevel, particularly to fill precinct delegate slots, and toraise money to do this.

Do you have a committee? – Our committee members

are Chairman Hank Fuhs, Executive Director Matthew X.Hauser, Contributing Editor Justin Swan, ContributingEditor John Mohyi, Contributing Editor and IT Director Ryan Rodarmer. We also hire independent office servicescontractors to put together our newsletter and completeour mailings.

Exciting New Internship Program

Grassroots USA is currently in the process of creating

an internship program. We want to creative a“mentoring” and “pathways” programs. The idea issimple. We want to create program designed fordifferent age groups. The idea is simple help connect people to a network that will help them get involvedand remain involved in the political process at thegrassroots level.

So many people want to get involved but simple arenot sure were to start. Grassroots USA hopes to aid inthis process, through events and getting articles intothe newsletter each month.

We could use your support to help launch this newidea and help people remain involved. For whathappens on the Grassroots level has an affect all theway to Washington.
