A s we rode into Jacksboro on the Annual Ice Cream Run June 15, I thought back

to the first time I rode with the Chapter there July 2008.

As one of 21 Harleys and a Honda, that run to Jacksboro and Bridgeport (and Denton and Farmersville since we just happened to be passing through) was my first long group ride and my second ride overall.

As we came into town, we went across the south side of the County Courthouse and back up through the parking lot. Everyone backed in facing City Drug Store, got off their bikes, and sauntered on over for ice cream — all very biker-ish, indeed.

During that same ride in Bridgeport, one of the members dropped his Sportster, and the toe shifter broke clean off. I watched as a couple of resourceful members came up with a pair of Vise-Grips and duct tape and made a temporary repair. Even with all that excitement, the thing I remember best is the camaraderie of the members on the ride and how welcome everyone made me feel.

Speaking of ice cream, hopefully everyone has enjoyed visiting the various Ice Cream Run shops, either with the Chapter, individually, or in small groups. And, if you’re out there exploring and spot a new location, make sure you share that with Denise, our Ice Cream Run coordinator for 11 years.

We’ll have our Ice Cream Run finale picnic July 7 at the Hella Shrine Temple Pavillion (2121 Rowlett

Rd. in Garland) complete with hot dogs and, hopefully, homemade ice cream.

On July 14, we’ll return to one of our old favorites — The Mecca Restaurant for breakfast (family-style serving is back). Afterwards, we’ll meet the American Legion Riders from Oklahoma City to receive the Nation of Patriots flag.

The next morning at 07:00 (sunrise is 06:29), we’ll get underway for Abilene. It is usually a nice ride out, but the ride back gets a tad warm. It’s never too early to start hydrating.

Congratulations to Lori Wetsel for submitting the winning pin design for the 30th Annual Lone Star Run (to be held September 22).

Finally, I want to thank Mike Carter for his service on the Board as Road Captain and Assistant Director over the past three-and-a-half years. I wish Former Safety Officer Lynn Lowrie well as he succeeds Mike.

I want to thank Dallas H-D GM Sean Steimel for allowing me the opportunity to serve as the

Assistant Director of the Dallas H.O.G. Chapter. I will do my best to help our Chapter grow and to ride and have fun at the same time.

This year is about half over, so take a look at your national membership card. Is it about to expire, or it good for another year?

You must have a current National H.O.G. membership — full or associate memberships — to be a member of a H.O.G. Chapter. If you have questions regarding memberships, you can contact me or the Chapter Secretary, Paula Lowrie.

We are going to reinstate the DHOG Volunteer Program. Each time you work as volunteer at a D.H.O.G. Chapter event or a shop event, that will

count toward the DHOG Volunteer Patch.

Activities Officer Steve “Paw Paw” Scott and I will keep track of the information in a database so that we do not lose track of who did what, where, and when.

After you have worked five events, you can be awarded a DHOG Volunteer Patch. If you are interested in volunteering for events please see Steve “Paw Paw” Scott or me.

If you are new to the Chapter or a long time member — it makes no difference — you can be a big help to Steve and me as volunteers at the next event.

If you are a D.H.O.G. vet and do not have a DHOG Vet Patch, please contact me, and I will get you one.

Thanks for all you do.Lynn Lowrie

Water is Not Enoughby James Pate

4 | RIDING TIPS

T he Texas heat is upon us. The summer of 2011 had seventy-one days of 100 degrees in DFW. While that is a record for the number of 100 degree days in a year for this area, even

days in the 90s can do us harm if we don’t take precautions.

I used to love the heat. I couldn’t wait for summer time. As I have gotten a little older, hopefully I have become wiser. Let me tell you what happened to me.

In July 2011, Frieda and I were riding from Texarkana to Rowlett. The temperature was at least 100 degrees, and the heat coming off the pavement must have been 120 degrees or more.

I was feeling good when we decided to stop in Greenville for gas and refreshments. When I pulled in to the service station, I got off the bike and tumbled to the ground like a toddler just learning to stand up. I was in a bad way due to heat exhaustion and dehydration. Another customer at the station saw what was going on and came to my aid. He helped me into his pickup and let me sit there with the air conditioning running for several minutes to help me cool off. I was also drinking Gatorade to help get rehydrated.

After a few minutes, I was able to walk into the store on my own where I continued my recovery. The man who had helped me volunteered to go to a nearby drug store to get some Pedialyte to restore the electrolytes in my system. I took the Pedialyte, and after about 30 minutes, I felt fine again. But I let myself get into a dangerous situation by failing to stay hydrated and letting my electrolytes get low.

Thank God for the man at the service station. If he hadn’t helped me, I don’t know what I would have done.

Don’t let this happen to you. Make plenty of rest stops, stay hydrated, and pay attention to the

electrolytes in your system. I now keep two products on my bike at all times: Pedialyte and Electrolyte Stamina tablets. Pedialyte can be purchased at any drug store. The Electrolyte Stamina tablets are harder to find, but are usually purchased at The Vitamin Shoppe.

I have purchased two other items that I use to help with excessive heat. One is a cool vest that I bought at the shop. The other

is a Veskimo, a personal cooling system that runs off the battery on the bike. It sells for about $325 at Veskimo.com. Is it expensive? Yes. But can you put a value on your health?

I had been drinking lots of water before the incident in Greenville. I thought I was hydrated, but sometimes water isn’t enough. We must keep

our electrolytes stabilized in order to maintain safe riding in excessive heat.

What are electrolytes? Electrolytes are essential minerals in your body that are

necessary for nerve and muscle function, the body-fluid balance, and other critical processes. They are particles that can carry an electrical charge and are present in your blood, plasma, urine, and other fluids. Electrolytes exist in the form of calcium, chlorine, magnesium, phosphate, potassium, and sodium that can be obtained from fluids, supplements, and foods.

The balance of electrolytes is constantly shifting due to fluctuating fluid levels in your body. For example, when you sweat as a result of exercise, hot weather, or illness, some electrolyte levels may be low. Vomiting and diarrhea are other causes of electrolyte imbalances, as they result in excessive fluid loss. You must replenish these fluids and electrolytes in order to prevent dehydration — a potentially life-threatening condition.

G reetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. It is that time again, when folks are planning road trips and getting ready to saddle up their iron ponies and go out

on a new adventure. So I thought I would share a few suggestions that I have found to be helpful practices for getting ready for the road.

I will begin with the foundation of the trip, our pride and joy, our scooters. Most of us try to manage our scooters’ regularly scheduled maintenance to coincide with our departure date. I know because I did this for years, and it seemed that each time there was a potential conflict of getting my ride ready before the departure date. Either a part had not arrived, my mechanic came down with an illness — thus delaying the job — or, while performing the maintenance, another problem was discovered.

So, I now make sure that whatever work needs to be performed is finished at least two weeks out from my departure date. This way, there should be no delay on getting parts or with the discovery of something else that needs attention. Plus, it gives me time to test ride my bike to make sure nothing was forgotten to be screwed back on properly.

If you happen to find you are between a scheduled maintenance before your trip, most shops are more than happy to schedule you a time for service when you may have a layover in their town. I know that sitting around a shop waiting for an oil change is not the way we want to spend our time on the road, but it can be time very well spent. Chat up the

employees on a good restaurant for dinner, or meet the other customers and fellow travelers, and learn about some of the local history or adventures they may be on.

Don’t forget to get your roadside emergency service in order. As a H.O.G. member, you have free roadside service through Road America. You need to check out the different levels of coverage

provided to you because there are some great options. I would suggest if you do a lot of riding that involves getting more than a county away from home, you look at upgrading to the Deluxe, Ultra, or Ultra Plus package. Your free coverage as a H.O.G. member has a limited amount of $100 that is covered and is only good for one use during a calendar year.

The Deluxe covers multiple motorcycles with unlimited mileage and times used during the year, while the Ultra adds emergency travel reimbursements. With the Ultra Plus package, you can add your cages to the

service. So, if you are going to be on the road for any length of time, these additional coverages will benefit you and add peace of mind, especially if you find yourself standing on the side of the road like most active riders eventually do.

Next month, I will share some packing tips for your trip and how to make the U.S. Postal Service work for you while you’re on the road.

As always, I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together…

Till next time remember, It’s not the destination, it’s the journey!

T hank you and congratulations to Lori Wetsel for her winning art artwork! Lori’s design was selected for the 30th Annual D.H.O.G.

Lone Star Run ride pins. This year’s run will be Sunday, September 22 at the Hella Shrine Pavillion in Garland.

Registration forms and info will be in the August issue of Pig Tales.

March 2014 will mark our 30th Annual D.H.O.G. St. Paddy’s Day Run, and we will have another design contest for the ride pin. Sharpen up your pencils, and be thinking about your winning design.

On Sunday, July 7 at 6:00 p.m., we will be celebrating this year’s Ice Cream Run finale with awards to the winners, hot dogs, chips, water, and sodas for everyone.

Even if you did not buy an Ice Cream

Run booklet, you are welcome to attend. We had a very good time last year, and

some members brought some great desserts. If you plan on staying and having hot

dogs with us, the absolute deadline to email me to let me know you’re coming is Friday, July 5. If not, you are still welcome to come, but don’t expect to eat.

Finally, safety is everyone’s responsibility; Don’t take it lightly. With school out for summer, there are even more inexperienced drivers on the road during all hours. Add in texting, talking, loud music, a 4,000 pound car, and everything is in place for disaster. Be aware of everything going on around you and stay safe.

I look forward to seeing you soon.At Your Service,

While most customers never get the chance to meet — or even see — the shop’s driver, Curtis, that’s not to say that he’s shy of customer service.

In fact, that’s actually his favorite part of the job, either while delivering or picking up motorcycles. Curtis ensures the quality of care and service used to handle the customers’ most precious cargo — their bikes.

Don’t worry. Curtis gets some riding time too. On the weeekends, he makes sure to rack up those miles on his first Harley-Davidson motorcycle, his ‘03 Road King.

Having started riding at the ripe old age of 16, Curtis built many of his first bikes. And while he’s on his first Harley now, Curtis has always been a fan working at Harley-Davidson drag races and rallies.

When the Texas heat cools off, Curtis’ favorite ride is down through the Hill Country, Fredericksburg, and Llano.

Curtis gives one safety tip: Keep your head. Stay smart, and stay safe.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT | 9FIT, FUNCTION & PERFORMANCE

CurtissBaumgardner

A s I write this the night before my family trip to San Antonio, I hear my wife’s voice in the back of my head echoing when we take

longer rides, “You need a better seat!” Seats it is, then.

Seats play an important and sometimes underestimated role in our motorcycle world. They can be classified into three categories: style, function, and fitment.

Style — as we all know — demands a hefty tax from us when it comes to our motorcycles; however, it is not always the best for our rear ends. These seats tend to be thin, sleek, and ... quite stylish.

My Softail came from the factory with one of these seats, a Badlander. Eight months after I got my motorcycle, I took a trip to ROT Rally. When we passed through Waco, I was numb from the waist down! Six years later, however, I am used to it and I can make a trip to Galveston and back and not bat an eye.

Some of these seats can be just solo versions and also tend to be the best ones for fancy customization.

Getting back to my wife’s voice insisting on my getting a better seat for her rear end leads me to function. These seats tend to be larger, wider, and much more comfortable than the thin seats. One such seat Harley offers is called the Sundowner.

The Sundowner is one of the most popular because it is offered for most models and years. It has a wide, bucket-style shape for the rider and a much larger,

thicker passenger area. Needless to say, I have one of these seats to make my wife happy. Happy wife, happy life, right?

For you touring chassis folks, you have a couple better options offered. The first is the Hammock Seat, and as the name suggests, it hovers you above the frame of the seat similar to a hammock. The second is the Road Zeppelin Seat, which is equipped with a built-in air compressor that plugs in effortlessly into the motorcycle and gives two adjustable zones for the rider and one for the passenger. I swear this seat has more comfort than my recliner at home!

Finally, and not to be underestimated, are the seats for the fitment of the rider to the motorcycle. One such seat Harley offers is the Reach line of seats. They have a dual function, and as the name suggests, it moves the rider closer to the hand and foot controls and has a narrow front area to help the shorter rider find the footing and confidence they might be looking for.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Tallboy Seat which moves the rider further and sometimes higher off the ground.

If you would like to try some of these seats, we have several of these in our Harley Seat Demo Program that allows you to take them on a ride and see for yourself the value of the right seat for the right rear end.

If you have a suggestion for or question about a product you want to learn more about, email Pig Tales editor Valerie Wong at [email protected].

T he weather was perfect as 19 bikes and 24 people made their way to Vicksburg, Mississippi, Memorial Day weekend.

Highlights of the trip included lunch at the Tomato

hours at the Quality Inn and Suites in Vicksburg. A special “thank you” goes to Pat Strange, our tour
