Dallas Brings Party To San Antonio

Dallas H.O.G. Chapter members attended the 2013 Texas State H.O.G. Rally in San Antonio May 16-18.

What can I say about May? It has been a packed month. We started with seven members taking an Experienced Rider Course and I’m pleased to say everyone did fine and learned some things about their bikes.

We departed Dallas H-D at 8 a.m. with 26 bikes and picked up five more at the first stop in Hillsboro. We traveled 310 miles incident-free, stopping at Horny Toad H-D and Fort Hood H-D for Texas H-D Tour passport stamps. After lunch in Killeen, we headed for dessert at the Blue Bonnet Café in Marble Falls. Everyone agreed the pie did live up to expectations.

We pulled into the Alamodome just after 5 p.m.

At the rally, there were plenty of activities to choose from. We had members — Gloria Barnes (left) and TL Peters (right), who took 3rd place in the Novice Category — compete in the precision riding competition.

Others opted to go on the rally’s guided rides to the missions and winery lunch. Some of us rode to local sites — the Canyon Lake Overlook and the Museum of the Pacific. And, of course, we met some of the locals. Thanks, Maggie, for all the pictures and a special thanks goes to

“Papa Duck” Kennerly and Steve Yeater for helping out on the rides.

W ell, here comes my last article for the D.H.O.G. n e w s l e t t e r , which some will be thankful for.

I had no idea it would be so difficult to come up with the words to express what I feel right now. But, here they are:

Evelyn and I have enjoyed so much of this journey that we have taken with many of you during my term on the board. It has taken us to so many destinations on the bike that we would otherwise never have experienced. The friendships that we have made were made possible by Harley, the dealership, the Chapter, the board, and all the effort that went into the rides and events. I thank you all for making this possible. But, the most important part of this journey has been — and always will be — the people who ride with us and experience the thrill of riding a Harley, and riding with the people whom we have this Harley bond with. We are the reason we ride.

It has been a pleasure to work with Sean Steimel, our GM. His dedication to us has been terrific. But most of all, I value his friendship and a common bond that he and I have — the vision to provide you, the Chapter members, with the best product that D.H.O.G. can give you. You can be comfortable in the fact that Sean has that vision for you guys. Thank you, Sean, for your support and friendship.

I would like to share some of the dedicated members and officers that you guys need to extend a big handshake

to for their service to you. And I only mention them because they are unique in what they do for us:

Kerry Turner has a gift for discovering unique and interesting rides that always have something special in them. He is devoted to that end, and it is appreciated.

Julie Steger has that special ability to get you involved — to draw you out of your shell — and can sell you anything, or raise money for any cause. And she delights in doing this to us. I know this because she has done it to me.

There are many others who devote their time and energy to you, the members of D.H.O.G., and you know who they are. Let them know you do appreciate it.

Harley-Davidson’s goal and desire for the members of H.O.G. is to have nothing more than good, fun, and safe rides to get Harley people together to ride, and then ride some more. That is what this Chapter thing is all about.

I also take pride in knowing that I have consistently honored those who have served us in giving time out of their lives to protect our great United States of America, our veterans. My hat is off to all of you for your sacrifices, and of course, some gave their lives. Please continue to pay D.H.O.G.’s respect to our vets.

Evelyn and I will see you down the road, and we wish you a safe ride to wherever life takes you. For now, thanks for the opportunity to serve you as your Assistant Director. It has been my pleasure.

Memorial Weekend Ride to Vicksburg, May 25 - 27

Greetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. Well, Angela and I are still winding down from the 2013 Texas State H.O.G. Rally held in San Antonio. Clothes are in the washer, bike is dropped off for

her regularly scheduled service, and dogs are picked up and returned to their routines. I hope that all who were able to attend the rally had an enjoyable time either hanging with our group or going out and exploring on their own, but most of all, making special memories.

I wrote last month about how each rally experience is different for each of us, and I believe this rally certainly provided that opportunity. There were bike games for those wanting to show their skills in competitive riding. There were great opportunities for riding the back roads of a wonderful part of our great state, and there was the river walk for those who needed to kick back and decompress from the daily stresses of the day. It seemed that wherever we walked or rode, we crossed paths with Dallas Chapter members enjoying life. That, my friend, is what it is all about, and I hope everyone brought some of that enlightenment back with them.

Angela and I have had the opportunity to ride most of the roads in this region and in the Hill Country, but we had not had a chance to ride the section of State Highway 16 that runs from Fredericksburg to Bandera before.

This, folks, is one really great road that needs to be one of your ride destinations the next time you are in the area — tight, twisty turns, blind curves, and enough ups and downs to make you think you were on a roller coaster ride. They have put down rumble strips on the road to get your attention as you enter these curves along with electronic speed monitors to warn you of excessive speed. They are a good idea. Fortunately, we only encountered one curve where a two-wheeler failed to make the turn, but the barbed

wire fence kept the bike from going further down the hill. I hope the rider was able to walk away but the ambulance had already transported them by the time we passed by, so we do not know their condition. So, when you ride this road, or any road, keep your wits about you, and ride safe.

Finally, I want to congratulate Roy Wetsel for earning his road name on this trip. As we entered Fredericksburg, the group was split up at a traffic light with Roy in front of another two bikes, and Angela and I were at the tail end. The lead group had crossed through the signal and then turned left at the next street, but Roy hadn’t seen them. When the light changed, we proceeded to the next street, but Roy kept going instead of turning, so “Papa Duck” had to go chase down his “Runaway Duck.” Roy was riding like a country boy on his first trip to the big city, but eventually we caught him, and soon he was back in the flock, safe and sound. It was great riding with you, Roy!

Over all, we had great food (especially breakfast at Mi Tierra’s in the marketplace, lunch at Buffalo Nickel in Fredericksburg, and lunch at Smitty’s BBQ in Lockhart), some minor scooter breakdowns and a flat on a trailer, but most of all, great traveling and being with the best folks around. You can’t beat that. Thank you “Chief” Ballard for your leadership, both on the bikes and on the ground and to everyone who shared their time with Angela and me.

And special thanks go out to the Gillespie County Sheriff’s Department for ensuring my stay in Fredericksburg met the letter of the law.

As always, I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together…

Rally Made For New Friends, Experiences

S o with all the great rides, shop events, great folks to visit with, and some really good food along the way, there is really no reason to sit at home.

Learning how to ride better can save your life, your passengers life, and my life if I’m in front of you.

Safety is our primary concern.

We have a blast, and Monday nights are becoming addictive.

Remember to pack a couple bottles of water on all upcoming rides. The heat can get to all of us from time to time.

If you ever find yourself not feeling well on a ride, please let us know immediately.

Shawna started at Dallas Harley-Davidson last November — a fact easily forgotten considering she has already established friendships with customers and staff that would otherwise take years.

She’s the owner of the bright smile that greets those who walk through the front doors, and for Shawna, that’s the best part. She loves getting to know the customers.

When she’s not at the shop, you can find her having fun and making new friends at bike night and other outings.

Shawna grew up riding dirt bikes and four wheelers in the country with her family. Although she has completed her motorcycle safety course and could never decline a blue Deluxe with ape hangers if given to her, she prefers to be passenger so she can enjoy the view. Her dream ride is the California Pacific Coast Highway.

Her advice to other passengers is to ride with a safe and trustworthy driver.

W ith all of the upcoming rides and rallies this time of year, I want to inform riders about

the Harley-Davidson Security System available, specifically for 2007 and newer models.

There are disc locks, cable locks, and even bike covers with audible alarms, but I wanted to concentrate on the security system you can get factory-installed or installed at any time at the shop.

The Harley-Davidson Security System has a feature that automatically arms itself. And with a hands-free security fob, you can start your bike without having to disarm it.

Once you turn off your motorcycle, the security system will arm itself within five seconds, disabling your starter, ignition, and electronic fuel system, leaving you worry-free.

If someone does try to start your motorcycle or even move it, the turn signals will begin to flash and, of course, the motorcycle will not start.

When the key fob is within 10 feet from your motorcycle, the security system will then allow it to be started.

If you lose the security key fob, the fob battery dies, or you break the fob into a million pieces, fear not. You are not stranded.

You can override the security system with a 5-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) with the turn signal switches, allowing you to start the motorcycle.

If you do not know the PIN, you can have it changed anytime your motorcycle is in for service. I also suggest practicing the manual override, so you are well-versed in

its use if the need arises.The addition of

the Harley-Davidson Smart Security Siren II comes in handy when the security system is activated (either by trying to start or move the motorcycle). A very loud, high-pitched siren

will sound to alert anyone nearby. You can also add a pager that will alert

you up to a half-mile away when the siren is activated. The pager is available in both a battery-powered and rechargeable version.

Most pre-2007 models can also have a security system installed with one main difference: The key fobs are not proximity-based. Instead, they are button-activated.

Parade Route: The toy run will end at the Hella Shrine Temple located in Garland on Rowlett Road @ Roan Road. The toy run will be police escorted.

Pre-registration begins September at Dallas Harley-Davidson at $10 per person.

Proceeds benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Money and toys will also be collected at the Grand Prairie and Garland Police Stations and other designated locations.

All donations are tax deductible.
