F ebruary was a roller coaster of a month. We had snow and ice and beautiful riding weather, sometimes in the same week.

Good news, Daylight Savings Time starts March 9, 2014 at 02:00

with sunrise at 07:46, and the Spring Equinox is March 20 at 11:57 CDT, so I think the dinner ride to Joe’s Crab Shack that night will be the perfect venue to unveil the “Spring Tie.” We have Diana Miller to thank for that tie as well as the “Winter Tie.” More importantly, the days are getting longer meaning more daylight, and the weather is getting warmer hopefully meaning longer rides.

The Ladies of Harley Valentine’s Day Movie was a great success. We had 60 people in attendance; saw a really great movie, “Jack Ryan,”and the menu had enough variety to please everyone. Darla Webster, our Ladies of Harley Officer, did an outstanding job at organizing this event.

Teams VooDoo Chili (Kerry Turner and Mike Savage), Gypsy Brew (Alisha Turner and Todd Shockley), and HOG Fuel (Steve and Wendy Yeater) competed at the Regional Chili Cook-off at Longhorn Harley-Davidson February 15 (pictured). Team VooDoo took First Place in Presentation and Gypsy Brew Chili took Second Place overall. First Place went to the West Texas Chapter in Abilene, so we’ll be headed out there next year.

March 16 marks the 30th Annual St Patty’s Day Run. Steve “Paw Paw” Scott is taking early registrations now through March 11. The first 100 registered get a pin. This is a rain or shine event, and we have an inclement weather plan as well. See page 6 for the pre-registration form and details.

Speaking of Abilene, the Texas State H.O.G. Rally is May 15 -17, 2014 in Abilene. There was a contingent from the Rally Committee at the Chili Cook-off and they were spreading the word. They’ve got some great rides planned, special showings of “Easy Rider” and “Wild Hogs,” Travis Tritt for the Friday night concert and Three Dog Night for the

Saturday night concert. Early registration continues through March 27, 2014. Even if you don’t register early, you can still register on-site. We will have a ride scheduled to the Rally leaving on Thursday led by our Assistant Director Lynn Lowrie. He is also planning a ride one day as we’ll be in his neck of the woods.

We’ll close out the month with two days of demo bikes at the shop. Haven’t ridden one of the 2014’s yet? This is your opportunity to test ride that bike you’ve had your eye on. There will also be a bake sale as a Chapter fundraiser.

I look forward to seeing everyone out there on the rides and at the events. So let’s get to riding and stop wasting daylight.

R iding in a group has special challenges, whether your group is two riders or twenty. By learning some of the basic guidelines of group riding, you can help make sure your next ride is safe and enjoyable for all.

Good communication is a must, and it starts before the ride. Make sure everyone knows what to do if someone gets separated. Assure that everyone is up-to-date on the hand signals that will be used on the ride. Some that we use are single file with one finger over your head. Signal staggered formation with two fingers up over your head or a hazard in roadway by pointing with your left hand or right foot. Slow down with your left arm out palm down. Stop with left arm out and bent downward.

Riding side-by-side reduces the ability of the riders to maneuver and escape in a dangerous situation. We ride in a staggered formation. Rider number one — the lead rider — is in the left third of the lane. Rider number two is the second rider following in the right third of the lane and rides one second behind the lead rider. Rider number three — the third rider — is again in the left third of the lane and rides two seconds behind the lead rider — rider number one — and one second behind the second rider — rider number two — and so on.

If you have a trike in your group, it will be in the center of the lane and will be two seconds behind the rider is front of him, and the following rider will be two seconds behind him. Say that the trike is the forth rider, we will call him rider number five and number six. We do not have a number four. Rider number seven will be in the left third of the lane.

When riding through tight curves in a group, don’t feel compelled to maintain your lane position if it compromises your ability to navigate the turn properly. It is okay to let a little space open up between you and the bike ahead if your comfort level requires it. It is the responsibility of all riders in the group to respect the different experience and skill levels of all the riders in the group.

One of the biggest stress factors for group riders is the fear of getting separated at a red light. It is better to get separated than to put someone’s safety at risk. If you have less experienced riders in the group, make sure they aren’t all in one group, and each one has at least one experienced rider to look after them.

Intersections are the area of the highest risk. Approach with caution with riders proceeding through only when it’s safe and legal.

Blocking an intersection without permission and a proper escort is almost always illegal. Always put personal safety ahead of staying with the group.

At all stop signs and red lights, line up side-by-side, two-by-two, at the stop. At stop signs, proceed through the intersections two at a time, returning to the staggered formation as you pull away.

At a left turn arrow, tighten the formation to allow as many riders as possible to pass through quickly. Don’t ride side-by-side. At a left turn no-arrow, proceed with caution single-file only when it’s safe and legal.

At a yield sign, turn your head to check for traffic before merging.

When merging onto a multi-lane freeway, do so single-file, then into the staggered formation after entering the flow of traffic. It’s the responsibility of the lead rider to accelerate to and maintain a safe speed and the responsibility of those following to keep up. Traffic may separate your group when you merge. If this happens, take your time re-grouping. A good idea is to slow down a little and encourage other vehicles to pass.

At cruising speeds, the lead rider is well advised to stay alert for merging issues as the group approaches on-ramps. Exiting the freeway should also be done single-file.

Passing on a multi-lane interstate, pass in small groups; On two-lane highways, pass one at a time, safely and only in marked passing zones.

Thanks for all you do.Lynn Lowrie

musings from the duCk pond | 7

G reetings and welcome to you from the Duck Pond. It’s in the air. Can you feel it? You know what I’m talking about….that restlessness creeping in your bones? Is your mind wandering, thinking of new

roads to ride, new cuisines to taste, and new cultures to experience? Freedom and spending quality time with some old friends and making new friends and new memories is in the air. That’s right. It’s the beginning of the State H.O.G. Rally season, and where is a better place to satisfy these longings than the great state of Louisiana, which is leading the charge by holding the first rally of the season down in Cajun country in Lafayette?

We will have a ride leaving the shop at 8:00 a.m. (0800 hrs) on the morning of April 3. We’ll be riding down to the land of boudin, beans and rice, and crawfish boils to spend a few days with the some of my very distant kin. We plan on having some great adventures, and I invite anyone who wants to share in what promises to be a wonderful time to come join us as we Laissez les bon temps roulet, or “let the good times roll.” You can find more information about the rally on their web site, LAStateHOGRally.com, so check it out and join us as we experience lagniappe each day.

Make plans to also join us as we ride out to Abilene, Texas May 15 – 17 to attend the second rally of the season, the Texas State H.O.G. Rally, and take in some west Texas culture. You can find more information about the rally at TXStateHOGRally.com. Their registration deadline is March 27 so don’t delay.

In an effort to improve our ability to communicate

last minute changes to the D.H.O.G. ride calendar, we are utilizing a new text system for the Chapter membership. This text program will only be used to communicate last minute or emergency messages to those who sign up for it. General information will continue to be sent by e-mail and posted on Facebook.

Your partnership in signing up and receiving these texts is voluntary and is not a requirement. If you are interested in signing up for this service, please go to DallasHOG.com and click the link in the “HOT NEWS” section. You can opt out of this service at any time if you desire, as explained in the Terms of Use:

The following terms apply to end users of iZigg Inc’s products. Standard message and data rates may apply. Text STOP to opt out. Text HELP for info. Products/services are compatible with AT&T handsets.

I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together…

Dallas HOG Mileage ProgramNew for 2014 we’re introducing our very own mileage program.

How does it work? It’s easy. Take a picture of your odometer at the beginning of the year and send it to me, [email protected]. At the end of the year, take another picture and send it to me.

I have more than one bike. Will you track all of them? Yes, just send a picture of each odometer.

I am a passenger. Can I participate? Absolutely, just make sure your name is included on the pictures.

Will all my riding count or just Chapter rides? All your rides will count. We want everyone to know that we ride.

Jessie Bunch is no stranger to Dallas H-D. He began as a Parts Associate in 2007 and quickly moved to the service department as a Technician, then Shop Foreman, and now — as of January — Assistant Service Manager.

When he’s not hidden in the service drive, customers might recognize him from service clinics and building custom bikes in the shop’s Annual Bike Build-Off.

Jessie found his love for motorsports at age nine when he began riding dirt bikes and later found himself on track at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. Even outside of work, Jessie is always upgrading and customizing his own personal 2011 Street Glide.

Jessie looks forward to creating great experiences for customers and developing strong relationships between them and the service department.

With Spring just around the corner, Jessie wants to remind riders to make sure everything functions correctly before hitting the road this season.

Rock and Roll!by Aaron Kelly

staff spotLight | 17fit, funCtion & performanCe

W ith the upcoming Boom! Audio Workshop on March 8, I thought I would touch base on what

Harley-Davidson has to offer for its touring model line-up. These can easily be separated by certain year ranges: 1998 - 2005, 2006 - 2013, and 2014.

The only thing offered for the 1998-2005 model years are Boom! Audio High Performance Boom! Bagger Speakers. The 5 ¼-inch Boom! Speakers feature an injection-molded woofer cone with a high-flux neodymium magnet which is sized to be a direct replacement for the stock speakers without any modification necessary. They include a grill-mounted tweeter which provides a high-frequency response.

While these speakers do not increase the radio’s output, they do give you a slight increase in sound. Where they really shine is lower distortion at a higher volume resulting in a much clearer, crisper sound. These are available for the front fairing as well as the Tour-Pak rear speakers.

For the 2006 – 2013 models you have many more options in the Boom! Audio line-up due to the upgraded Harman/Kardon radio. The same Boom! Audio Speakers mentioned above are available for the front fairing and Tour-Pak locations as well as two other additional locations. You can replace the fairing lower glove boxes with Boom! Audio speakers as well as your hard bag lids with lids that accept 5-inch by 7-inch Boom! Audio Speakers. These both feature a 1-inch suspended tweeter which are directionally optimized for improved rider acoustics.

The Harman/Kardon radio can only support four speakers unless aided by a Boom! Audio Amplifier. This amp features a 40-watt

per channel output (160 total) resulting in increased volume, fuller sound reproduction, reduced clipping, and lower total harmonic distortion. If you want to amplify a third and fourth pair of Boom! Audio Speakers, there is a Speaker Expansion Kit offered.

Finally for the new 2014 Project Rushmore models, many of the same items are offered with some differences. The front fairing and Tour-Pak Boom! Audio Speakers are larger at 6.5-inch with a polypropylene cone for improved low and mid frequencies, while the bridge-mounted soft-dome 1-inch tweeters are for improved high frequencies. The Boom! Audio fairing lower speakers are also a larger 6.5-inch. While the Boom! Audio saddlebag speakers are still 5-inch by 7-inch, they have high strength woofer cones and a suspended 25 mm tweeter.

For 2014, the Boom! Audio Amplifiers also get some improvements. These amps bypass the Project Rushmore infotainment internal power amp, boosting the pure source signal to 75 watts per channel (300 total). There is also a Boom! Audio Speaker Expansion Kit available to amplify a third and fourth pair of speakers.

There are other sound system upgrades for the touring models as well as speaker systems available for non-touring models which I will cover next month. Until then, crank it up!

ABOUT THE SALES DEPARTMENTThe Sales Department is one of the best areas in the dealership because we get to enjoy seeing customers obtain their dream bike. More than likely, you will have heard one of our team members ask “what kind of riding do you do or are you planning on doing?” This is because our job is to assist in providing the best solution to your needs as a Harley-Davidson owner. We pride ourselves on having a wide selection of motorcycles, both new and used, so that you can choose your perfect ride!

ABOUT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENTThe Service Department is the circulatory system of the dealership — the blood flow. But from the customer’s perspective, we are the Pediatric Ward, as we are taking care of their “babies.” We keep in mind that each customer’s primary concern is his or her bike. At any given time we can have up to 100 “primary concerns” in our care. Our job is to find the balance to give each one the attention it demands. Whether it’s a repair,

WE TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE!

HOW TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENTMaking an appointment is easy. The best way is to complete the service request form on dallashd.com and we can save you time by having most of the check-in questions answered. Another option is to call 972-270-3962 and ask to speak with one of our Service Advisors. The check-in process will take about 10 to 15 minutes so we can be certain we are addressing all of your concerns as well as notify you about some of the H-D products that may enhance YOUR ride.

EXTENDED WARRANTY INFORMATIONOne of the best products from Harley-Davidson is the ability to add an extended warranty to your bike at just about any time in your ownership. If you have any questions about coverage, please contact Kristin Draves, a Service Advisor, or a Finance Manager in Sales for more info. Beyond the warranty - the possibilities are nearly endless to make your ride, YOURS. Whether it is performance, appearance, or a combination of both, we are here to help you stamp the final four letters into your V.I.N. — “M-I-N-E.”
