On the responsibilities of being Memberof Parliament for Phuket with particularregard to the Tourism Industry

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism andSports, we are responsible for tourism not just inPhuket but for the whole of Thailand and so wehave to try to maintain a balanced outlook for thebenet of the whole country. Our department provides

information on the Industry to the Government andmakes suggestions which we think will benetThailand as a whole. For example, when the Governmentinjects money into the market, we closely examinethe effect and evaluate the outcome.

What are the problems that the ThailandTourism Industry is currently facing?

One very important problem is that Thailandcurrently has quite a strong currency compared toour neighbouring countries and Europe. Additionally,as we know, every corner of the world is confrontinga global nancial crisis. Most of our tourists areEuropean, and when world forces conspire to makeeveryone think twice before spending their moneyon a holiday, many people would probably prefer toeconomize by changing their tourist destination to anearer country where the currency is weaker than itis currently in Thailand. In this circumstance we haveto underscore our strong points and luckily for us,no one can truly imitate Thai hospitality and thatspecial Thai touch. Its not just about stimulating

the economy by pushing money into the market,but we have to accentuate our good points andshow the world our beautiful culture. We need toput emphasis on the things we have and the peoplewe are, not the things we want or people we wantto be because theres still no place in the worldquite like Thailand.

We have sea, sun, and sand in Phuket and theAndaman region and we can use these resources tohighlight our strong points. Many foreigners comehere to see the real Thailand. They accept Easterncultures more than the past, and want to know andlearn more about the country.

Three major projects are coming soon

The government will be pushing for a PhuketConvention Centre capable of holding up to 6,000people and is striving to create an open air sportsarena and complex. Also, it intends to raise thePhuket Technical College, Thalang Campus, touniversity status. In this way we aim to improvePhuket to be a hub for many activities which cangather income for the country. As Phuket alreadyhas an international airport, beautiful beaches plusinternational standard hotels and resorts, we arealready making the most of what we have.

And the man behind La Colline is Alain Cohenwhose emphasis on affordability makes the dreamaccessible to all. Phuketindex.com had an insightfulinterview with him just a few weeks ago.

On his background:Alain is a 58 year old Frenchman who has donemany things in his life before deciding to run aproperty business in Phuket. One of his projects

for example, was to open a textile factory inVientiane, Laos in 1993, something he kept runninghimself until just over one year ago.

On starting La Colline:We bought the land about 4 years ago just afterthe tsunami disaster. When we rst went to view it,

we found that it was a really beautiful land here

in Phuket surrounded, as it is all year, by lush

tropical greenery. Weconceived the idea to buildaffordable villas in thebeautiful environment,making the most of theviews. We then contactedA49-Architect 49, one of thebest known architecturalcompanies in Thailand,and asked it to designreasonably sized houses ata similarly reasonable

price, whilst making themost of the space. As Iexpected, they have donea pretty good job.

On the most successful way to promoteLa Colline:

I can safely say that word of mouth has been ourbest advertisement. So far we have sold almost45% of the project, which is great, mostly tofriends, and friends of friends who live in Bangkok,Indonesia, Shanghai, Taipei and even France. Wehave focused our marketing strategy on peoplewho love Phuket and want to live here, or peoplewho love to come here very often. Coupled with ourreasonable price, this strategy has been successful.

On his working principle:Actually, I have many working principles, but Iknow my limitations so I gather good professionalpeople around me. Each task is analyzed thenassigned to the right specialist whom I trust tomake the right decisions. I limit myself to managingthese people, and in this way I let them have theconfidence to work with me and hopefully promotea happy working atmosphere. If we are happy,our customers should, in turn, be happy with the

outcome.

Luckily, the financial aspecthas been secured with La Colline.

Since its inception we made sure thatwe had absolute security with this projectand that is why we do not really haveany concerns at this time. The crisis mayslow down the marketing somewhat,but we are still condent that our project

will be 100% complete by end 2010as originally planned and despite theglobal economic downturn we are stillreceiving enquiries, and those potentialcustomers who have seen the project

are still really showing a great interestin our project and in fact, we have 34houses targeted by prospective customers.

On his greatest challenge:When you ask what my greatestchallenge is, I have to say that it isgiving each and every buyer customersatisfaction. It is sometimes apainstaking process but I believe inattention to detail and making surethat every demand is satisfied to thefull extent of my ability. The customeris always right is my maxim.

On his other projects in the future:Well, actually, I really dont knowwhat will be next, laughed MonsieurCohen. This project has been about2 years in the making, so lets get itfinished first then Ill think about it.A lot of hard work has gone into LaColline, but the way Im thinking atthe moment, I may do two furtherprojects. Who knows? he continuedto chortle, Anything can happen.

On his free time:Most definitely golf. I play almostevery day and do lots of other sports

including swimming and exercising atthe gym. Im not a night bird so I canwake up very early. I try to organize mydaily routine to maximize my free time.

Graham Bibby is a UK born nancial advisorwho has become well known throughout Asia, andeven the world, for his appearances on televisionprogrammes during the present economic crisis. Ashead of the Richmond Group he has had considerablesuccess in Phuket and today we will delve into his past totry to analyze why.

From a very young age Graham was different fromother children in that he was more interested in moneywhilst his contemporaries played more traditionalchildrens games. In his twenties, his interest in thesubject was unabated and he joined one of the worldslargest insurance companies based in the UK providingfinancial planning advice, and he was a foundingmember of the UK Financial Planning Association. Thusbegan his nancial and investment career.

When, during the early 70s, the UK faced one of itsmost severe economic crises, Graham spent a lot oftime and effort trying to gure out why, and how toturn disaster into prot. His studies provided a soundbasis for investment, even in these dark days. Duringthe 80s the UK property market boomed and Grahamwas astute enough to forecast a crash at the end ofthe decade, together with an end to the concurrentJapanese economic miracle. Such foresight put himin the worlds spotlight.

There comes a turning point in every mans life and GrahamBibby was no exception. The aftermath of his foresight

was the development of a strong nancial model givinggood returns based on sound analysis and investorpsychology. He decided to move to Hong Kong in 1991and started Richmond Asset Management; a Hong Kongregistered investment advisory company.

His established track record as the possessor ofdependable foresight and his accumulated experiencesoon earned him a strong reputation in the old Britishcolony, and as a consequence he was elevated toChairman of the Technical Analysts Society of HongKong from 1996 to 1998. He was also authorized bythe Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission as anAsset Manager and Advisor.

Graham rst visited Phuket in 1992 andbecame a regular visitor thereafter. He notedthat Phuket was growing steadily year upon year butstill lacked a basic infrastructure to provide properfacilities and ease of transportation. Neverthelesshe judged the island to have enormous potential

to grow into the holiday destination it is today,and to be a sought after destination for expatriates,retirees and investors. Accordingly he selectedPhuket as a high priority to expand his portfolio.

Originally he bought one rai of land at Bang Tao uponwhich he built his rst exclusive residential project

The Himmaphan. Gradually he increased his landholdings around the Laguna area, which is known todayas an area of high-end development, to very largeamounts. The Richmond Group became establishedas a developer of niche properties focusing on creatingquality homes catering to exclusive markets and theinternational investor community.

Initially Graham encountered many problems asa result of relying upon an outsourced contactor.This situation made him think of doing the wholeprocess himself and as a result he amassed someof the best architects, designers, and project managersfrom around the world to form his own team. Inso doing the Richmond construction departmentwas established providing all aspects of developmentincluding documentation, design, construction andmanagement.

The Basic DietThe standard macrobiotic diet

consists of:50-60% whole grains20-30% seasonal vegetables, cookedor raw.5-10% protein foods - such as shor legumes.5-10% soups

What materials can crowns be

made from?

Over the years, technological

advancements in dentistry have

gradually developed to ensure

excellent modern day solutions

for patients. Some materials and

techniques once used have become

obsolete and newly invented ones

have come to replace them. As such

dental crowns today are made from

a wide variety of materials. Theycan be metal, ceramic, or even

porcelain fused to metal.

Crowns made purely from metal

however are a poor choice for

highly visible teeth because of their

metallic colour. Nevertheless, all

metal crowns are an ideal option

for molars or back teeth since they

are very durable. Porcelain, fused to

base metal crowns are more pleasing

in appearance than metal but less

strong and also can begin to show

dark gum lines over time.

In comparison to the aforementioned;

crowns made solely from ceramic

represent the best choice for a

natural cosmetic look as they

are a perfect choice for front teeth.

Mainly because with no metal,

no discoloration appears when the

gums thin out over time. All the

same they are not recommended

for back teeth since ceramic or

Con: All-ceramic crowns require more tooth reduction.

All-Ceramic Crowns vs Porcelain VeneersAll-ceramic crowns and porcelain veneers are almost

identical. Slightly different in shape, all-ceramic crowns

will cover all the surfaces of a tooth where as a porcelain

veneer covers only the front surface (those facing the

lips and cheeks). Both of them have unique advantages

and limitations that make them appropriate for treating

specic dental concerns. All-ceramic or porcelain crowns

can help improve both the appearance and function of

the teeth. Whereas porcelain veneers generally address

only cosmetic concerns and are used to solve only

minor problems. However, in choosing to use a porcelain

veneer, the tooth surface will be less trimmed as it will

be applied to less of the surface of the natural tooth.

What does the procedure of having all-ceramic

crowns tted involve?

Once you have nished the consultation process and

discussed with the dentist all the treatment options.

If it is decided you require an all-ceramic crown, your

dentist will prepare your tooth for your dental crown

by reshaping it under a local anaesthetic to allow the

crown to sit comfortably over the top of it. Then the

model or impression of your teeth will be taken and

given to a technician for fabrication. During this time,

your prepared tooth will be covered and protected by

a temporary crown. Your all-ceramic crown is then

fabricated in the lab and cemented into place at the

clinic by the dentist after it has nished.

the General Manager, Mr James Sullivan-Tailyour.

Please tell us briefly about your background.I rather fell into the Hotel industry by accident butquickly realized it was something I enjoyed, basicallylooking after people and ensuring their experiencewas a positive one. After finishing a degree in hotelmanagement, I worked with a variety of organizationsin the UK, USA, Africa, the Middle East and throughoutAsia, always focusing in the luxury end of the market.I have been fortunate to be able to work with suchhotels as the Hilton, Intercontinental Hotels,Six Senses Resorts & Spas and Savoy Middle East.

How did you come to be General Manager of the hotel?

My main experience was in Sales & Marketing but Ialways took an interest in how the operations teamsdelivered guest satisfaction. Although it has alwaysbeen a key part of the sales and marketing process,looking at the hotel operation from a customerperspective is considered ever more importanttoday, and certainly that is our focus at The VijittResort.

What is the most challenging part about being GM?

Constantly keeping up with the changing environment.

To get to the top and to stay on top requires constantreview of our own and others concepts, particularlysince the markets and customers expectationschange much more quickly than they used to.However, it is this aspect that I enjoy the mostabout the job.

Whats your number one working principal?

Focusing the whole team on the concept that theyare part of the customer experiences in everythingthey do - it all comes down to the guest and whathe or she wants, not what we want. From a staffperspective fairness is important, as is leading fromthe front. We want our staff to enjoy working hereand to feel that they are part of a family.

Have you ever been afraid to open a new hotel?

I have always enjoyed a challenge. I opened a hotelin Northern Uganda where the completion date wasdelayed several times as a result of attacks fromanti-government factions. However, after finallyopening the resort, and in the process achievingUgandas Investors of the Year award, it all seemedworthwhile. Back then I was single, now with theresponsibility of a family I am not sure that I wouldbe up for that level of challenge. In contrast, Phuketis great place to work.
