Michael TrocherieFounder and CEO of Wine Connection

PeopleFocus

One man travels around the world with his pledge he made to himself. He is searching for a collection of the best wines to feature in his stores and it is the commitment to deliver the best wine experience to customers glass by glass. If “Wine

Connection” is the name of the child, the name of its father must be “Michael Trocherie” - a man who is in our focus from now on.

Michael is the founder and the CEO of the Wine Connection. The company is Thailand’s leading wine importer and known among wine lovers for its quality selection. There are more than over 500 different wines and other booze available in its 25 stores throughout Thailand in various locations namely Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Samui and Phuket plus one online store.

“It was about 15 years ago when I started doing my wine business in Asia. It’s the 12th year in Thailand and now seven years in Phuket particularly. Our work is to select the wine, bring them to Thailand and make wine available for individuals, supply them in our own store, to the hotels and to our business friends in Thailand,” told Michael.

When we asked about his business in South East Asia, it’s kind of surprise to learn that Michael has no plan to further expand his business into other countries – at least for now. “At present, apart from Thailand, we are also already in Singapore and Vietnam – three countries. I didn’t plan to go further to any other country. For Thailand, we are the main importer by now. I don’t know what level we achieved but I’m sure we are one of the biggest.”

He however never thinks to stop.

“We have a future plan to develop what we currently have in hand though. There are three main directions we are focusing on. One is our own wine store. Two is the wholesale dealership on catering to hotels and restaurants. And last it our newly developed concept ‘Wine Connection Deli & Bistro’ - our own restaurant. So we have three ways to expand depending on the opportunity. We will probably open more stores, more Deli & Bistro’s or more branches within hotels and restaurants.”

About the tip Michael used as a compass for his success, he said there is no other way but to work hard and suggested people “try to do something different that the others don’t do yet. Always be a little bit inventive. A lot of people like to copy but I don’t. I only take the inspiration I saw from other countries and bring it into Thailand.”

Welcome to the world of wine

“Try to do something different that the others don’t do yet. Always be a little bit inventive.”

www.phuketindex.com 17

Page 18: Phuketindex.com Magazine Vol.9

How about a perfect match? “There is no perfect match in the world of wine. It’s just a choice. Nobody says you have to drink this or don’t drink that. It depends on the situation and your feeling at that moment. The weather, your emotion, and your friends are involved as well. You have to listen to yourself.” As a big fan of wine and an amateur of Thai cuisine, Michael affi rmed, “Wine can unques-tionably get along with Thai food. Rosy wine is very suitable. White wine, especially those aromatic wines like Riesling, are pretty perfect in my opinion. For those who prefer red wine, it can be all right too but it’s little bit ‘warm’ for tropical climate. However, you have to keep in mind that this is enjoyment. It’s not about reading text books. There is no limitation.”

To start exploration, “You may need a fridge to store the wines. It is good to keep it below 20 degree Celsius. When you drink, the wine shouldn’t be too warm. The best temperature for red wine is 18 degree Celsius and 8 degree Celsius for white wine. Remember to drink at the right temperature, this is really important. The same wine, you drink at right temperature you will enjoy but when you drink it too warm you will not.”

Still, I had a doubt in my head about selecting good wines, but Michael explained, “Every country has good wines now. But it doesn’t mean you can have good wines everywhere and you cannot say that French is good, Chile is bad. Every country produces both good and bad wines. It’s very confusing I know. That’s why it’s good to have people choose for you. That’s why we are here. That’s why you come to my store. When you pick the wine, it is ok already. I don’t care if it’s cheaper, I don’t care about the brand. I care only about its quality and its good value. Therefore I travel around the world, pick some wines and bring them back to my shelves.”

While wine seems incomprehensible for many people and may be the reason why people hesitate to start, Michael wiped out our anxiety. “You don’t need to know anything. Don’t make it complicated. Just take it easy. When you visit a restaurant, you order a glass and see what happens. It is that simple. I’d recommend you to start from the new world i.e. Australia, Chile, Argentina, or South Africa because they are usually easier to understand. You can start with the medium range wines, no need to buy the expensive wines but don’t choose too low, so that you can enjoy it.”

Very many thanks to Mr. Michael Trocherie for his valuable chat. You have enlightened us and made us be courageous to start drinking wine.

PeopleFocus

Wine is considered foreign for traditional Thai culture. It is generally seen as a privilege of the elites and has been regarded as an indicator of social ‘class’ for many Thais. But this is not something that will easily discourage Michael; he said “I don’t think the attribute is the problem. Actually wine is not only for elites. The idea of Wine Connection is to make wine available for everyone. For example, now you can buy a bottle of wine at only 350 baht and I believe a lot of Thai people can afford it. It’s not expensive. That’s why we go everywhere even in suburb areas. We open our stores in many places where other people don’t, not only in the business areas. And I’m glad we see more and more people open their minds for wine drinking and consume it more often.”

“In my opinion, wine is the most interesting beverage that contains alcohol. It associates with culture and discovery. There are thousands of wines you can explore, not only products itself but also for its culture. It’s like a journey that you can learn and share with others. When you drink, you don’t drink alone, right? So wine drinking is about socializing too. I feel like I am reading books from many countries.”

Its concept is a higher level of standard which Kata Royal Residence’s team of professional set for the condominium market in Phuket. It goes beyond luxury and comfort to better perspectives and adds perfection in every detail. On this occasion we grabbed a chance to interview with Mr Soponsil Boonchompaisarn and Miss Pimpa Phitya-isarakul, two executives who determined the project’ vision, designed its character and created a creation that exceeds the expectation of customers.

How did Kata Royal Residence begin? The project began when we executives formed a team ourselves. Based on our experience in the real estate industry, whether it be designing, construction, finance or marketing which we are accustomed to, that made us a complete Kata Royal Residence team. We chose Phuket as we regard it as a 2nd Hawaii of the world and because we believe Phuket has the potential to develop and grow much more. Later, we were looking for a good location to launch our fi rst project. It ended up in Kata as the area is becoming interesting and the location is strategically good.

Talk about the idea and concept that drives the project? Not different from others, we hold onto every basic feature a good condominium should provide - let’s say: comfort and convenience, tasteful design, and a complete range of facilities. But one entity we bring to our concept is sublime scenery. The residents will be able to enjoy multiple sunset views of the Andaman Sea. We are confi dent there are not many condominiums in Phuket that offer this specialty. And we believe this aspect will raise up the project and create distinctiveness anyone can remember at Kata Royal Residence.

By focusing on its selling points, ‘Kata Royal Residence’ boasts the ability to enjoy dramatic views of every sunset over Kata Beach, wherever you are in the building. This 53 unit condominium project ‘Kata Royal Residence’ is therefore being watched closely by both buyers and other players in Phuket’s property market for its remarkable kick off.

www.phuketindex.com 21

Page 22: Phuketindex.com Magazine Vol.9

What are the style, design and size of the units? The design concept of Kata Royal Residence, for both exterior and interior, is tropical modern giving a feeling of a vacation home. The project comprises 53 two-bedroom units packed with cutting-edge facilities and technology. With functional space varying from 105-170 sqm., each unit can cope with a large family as it is even spacious enough for a small party. The building features lifts for different zones that have been divided to make it easy to facilitate together with restaurant and fi tness centres.

What are the prospects of the project? We concentrate on foreign clients - the European market - those who choose a destination like Phuket for their vacation and a group of new generation business people. Kata Royal Residence has been designed to fulfi ll the requirement of this segment – not only for living but for investment purposes as well. We estimate that it could make not less than 30% in value gains.

What would you like to say to the readers? We would like to introduce everyone who is searching for 1) convenience 2) views 3) vacation home in Phuket, to consider Kata Royal residence and our futures projects. We pledge to carry on the idea, no matter how many more projects come up. This also helps our position in the market become clearer and understood easily. The project’s fi nancial back up is trustworthy and certainly secure. To reduce complications about banking, we have our own fund to support foreigners especially, to loan directly through the project. So please believe in our potential & readiness and feel free to talk with us.

ChefTalk

When and how did you fi rst become interested in cooking?Chef Angelo: My passion for food started back in my childhood. My mother, she is an excellent cook, so as a kid, I already began to enjoy making my “hands dirty” while helping big “Mama”. Now the relation with the kitchen has become a real passion and this is the way I like to express myself and my feelings.

What about your career path?My experience as a professional chef started in Italy, at the famous Grand Hotel Helio Cabala in Marino (Rome). I have to say that I was very lucky to have as Master Chefs some of the best, worldwide-known Italian chefs such as Gianfranco Vissani, Gualtiero Marchesi, Sergio Mei and Antonello Colonna; all chefs whose restaurants received ‘Michelin Stars’. My other experiences, that surely need to be mentioned, are at the five star Hotel Schwaitlalm in Salzburg where I was focused on Austrian cuisine and the‘Raffaello’ restaurant in Mexico city where I had the chance to develop a good knowledge of Latin and South American cuisine. After that I moved to Germany in Mainburg where I spent another two years in a German kitchen. Another experience, which helped me to develop my passion and knowledge for food, was working with the UN and the FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) and my last employment, before Impiana Resort Phuket, was at the Sheraton Shenzhen in China.

Where does your inspiration come from?Chef Angelo: It is the result of my experience in two different worlds: Italian and Asian cuisine mixed together like making sauce for Italian dishes with curry, basil, and lemongrass.

What is the characteristic of your own creations? Chef Angelo: As I’m an Italian native, I prefer to keep

the taste of my food authentic. For me, it’s not the presentation but taste that is far more important. However when I came to ‘Sala Bua’, taste and presentation have to combine together.

Who have been the biggest inspirations for your career?Chef Angelo: Mama has inspired me a lot as I told. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my mum since I was very young. I learnt more and more about cooking from her. She’s very good at cooking fi sh and that is the reason why my favourite dishes are all fi sh.

What made you decide to join Impiana Phuket?Chef Angelo: I have been in Thailand before and can’t help falling in love with it. Impiana Resort, where I chose to stay at that time, left me a good impression so I decided to come back again but now as a chef, not guest.

What is the best part of your job?Chef Angelo: I will be very happy to see the guests enjoy their time or dinner with my food.

Please tell us about a memorable experience in your career life?Chef Angelo: It was when I had a chance to run cooking shows on international channels while I still was in Italy. It was fun and a good experience.

What is your suggestion for those who want to become a chef?Chef Angelo: Enjoy your life, job and meals!

What is your next goal?Chef Angelo: To work as a chef on the moon!

Thank you Chef Angelo for this interview and we wish you success with “Impiana Phuket Resort”.

Kitchen Plus staff told people that it is a new style restaurant in Phuket and invite everyone to try it

out. Phuketindex.com couldn’t resist sending us out to prove the claim. At Kitchen Plus located in HomePro Village Chalong, we walked around, grabbed a seat, tasted the food and talked to the owner; Mr. Teerasak Phonngam (Kim) and Restaurant Manager; Mr. Thanaphat Nuansakul (Kob) to learn all about ‘Kitchen Plus’.

Are you food lovers? We two enjoy eating as much as loving to cook. The idea quietly came up when we were travelling around - visiting this and that restaurant - and started to think about our own childhood dream. It took a while to open the restaurant though, crafting the menu, and searching for profi cient cooks: these processes took time as we all knew that cooking needs elaboration.

Eats & FunDining

Li festy le

Do you serve to all tastes? You are all welcome at ‘Kitchen Plus’. Thai cuisine is the main focus of our restaurant but we do add western items as well, to attract foreigners, for example in the menu we have soup, American breakfast, spaghetti and steak. Talking about Thai restaurants in Phuket, people might think that we cook to please foreigners, and the taste or spice may be cooled down. But for ‘Kitchen Plus’, taste & spice is standard Thai except when the customers require a mild fl avour or no spice.

With two guys in the kitchen, do you have to be ‘able’ to cook?(Kim) Yes, I was a cook on my own before. When I was studying and living abroad, I always cooked for myself and took food to a temple. Further than this, it was my mother who was very good at cooking and I think it passed down and I learnt her way. So for me cooking is reckoned as a real ‘heart catcher’. Kob himself has to do it as well. (Kob) When our cook is absent, we have to be able to replace her. I sometimes have to enter the kitchen, cooking Som Tam and everything myself.

Uncover ‘Kitchen Plus’ Daintiness you order

K

28 www.phuketindex.com

Page 29: Phuketindex.com Magazine Vol.9

What are on today’s menu? They are all are some of Kitchen Plus’ popular dishes. Pad Thai with our own homemade sauce - somewhat spicy; Stir-fried Shrimp with Curry Powder in which we use fresh White Shrimps - not cultured nor frozen shrimps; Deep Fried Sea Bass with Fish Sauce to eat with Mango Spicy Salad - crispy outside but tender inside. Other popular dishes are Spicy Mixed Vegetable Soup with Prawns, Sea Bass with Curry Powder, and set dishes like Thai Red Curry Soup with Thai goramy fi sh especially for Thais’ favourite choice. Here we have over 200 dishes and all of them are cooked with the freshest ingredients we get daily.

How do you get employees’ hearts? We see everyone as a family member which is all important. Whether they are a steward, a waitress, or a cook, we treat them equally. For ‘Kitchen Plus’, we are just like a father, a pillar of our family.

Have there been diffi cult experiences?(Kob) Running a restaurant is totally new to us. So diffi culties were inevitable. I graduated with an engineering degree. Kim has been engaged in the property industry. We had no restaurant experience before. It’s kind of lots of work with hard homework to do. We realized that part of the success is ‘teamwork’. We then tried to give our staff our hearts and hope deeply they will give theirs back in return. (Kim) We had so many problems to cope with when we fi rst opened. It was September and we planned to run a soft opening but things turned out to be far beyond our expectations. With good feedback and word of mouth power, our restaurant was crowded with customers. We underestimated its popularity. There were only a few people at that time to run the operation and deal with complaints of slow service. Everyone had to help each other. But now everything is set in its place. We have experience and learnt the lessons. I have to admit that it was really stressful. We don’t want to let anyone in with a negative fi rst impression that will undoubtedly ruin our business.

What are your future plans? We plan to expand with more branches when everything is systemized and settled. It probably will be in a franchise pattern. There are a few customers from other provinces showing their interest and discussing this with us. So we consider them and wait for the time we are really ready to move on. For Phuket, new branches might be at Central Festival Phuket or Jungceylon - a tourist zone with high potential.

What are the keywords for running a restaurant? This is easy; one is honesty and another is service-mind. With these two things, you can do it. It is very tiring but if you have the heart, you will get good feed back.

What are your lifestyles like? (Kob) Lifestyle has a lot of infl uence on our restaurant. We are easy-going people and that is refl ected in our food presentation. We keep it simple and focus on a comfy atmosphere instead. (Kim) I like travelling, eating, experiencing something new and interior design. These inspire me a lot in my own restaurant. The concept is not limited to one style. It’s the mixture, the blending of our characters that is different in each corner.

What’s your message to the readers?(Kob) - We try to serve the fi nest food with the best service. If you are looking for an easy restaurant with a good price, please come. (Kim) I would like to invite everyone. It’s true that we are a newly opened restaurant - our food is not though. You can enjoy our signature cocktail. Come and be entertained with nice folk songs by a Philippines live band every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Say hi to us and we will recommend you some dishes.

Taste modern food ‘Aroma Restaurant’…A great location at Cape Panwa in Phuket has made ‘Novotel Phuket Beach Resort Panwa’ beachfront accommodation that everyone dreams of. One of the special moments staying overnight here is a perfect dining experience served in ‘Aroma Restaurant’ …

‘Aroma Restaurant’ is surrounded by panoramic views of the sea and the sky that make the food and beverage on white tablecloth even more impressive. Smooth jazz music lulls the customers who are waiting for their favorite dishes. Most of the dishes at Aroma Restaurant are International Modern Cuisine & Thai Cuisine, yet its other outstanding dishes are cooked in Mexican style as well.

The best selections of the restaurant are Thai spicy appetizers, namely

Yam Som O and hot Mexican - Latin menu Fajitas with Spicy Sauce. The common spicy taste of the two dishes make our digestive juice begin to work.

Then, it’s the time to savor the restaurant’s recommended main

course, Salmon Escalade in American Sauce, a modern fusion dish of salmon

topped with the restaurant’s exclusive sauce and served with Thai steamed rice. The dish goes well with a glass of good beer and stunning ambience surrounding the restaurant.

Dining Out on Kata Beach ‘Oasis On the Sea’

‘Oasis On-the-Sea’ are the new creation of Mom Tri Devakul – the owner of Phuket’s famous Boathouse and Mom Tri’s Royale Kitchen in Villa Royale, both fine dining locations and boutique hotels in Kata.

You can go in from Kata Beach, almost adjacent to The Boathouse. This southern

Kata venue looks out over the beach and is cooled by sea breezes. If

you are driving, park up on the nearby hill at Villa Royale - there is a shutt le service to bring you back down to Oasis.

The Décor of Oasis on the Sea follows a colour scheme with

non-slip stone floors, lots of white columns, plenty of greenery and, of

course, that lovely view of Kata Beach, one of Phuket’s most beautiful strands. Part of the restaurant leans toward a cosmopolitan touch with French ballads and lots of passers by on the busy street outside, while Oasis features plenty of space and a jazz combo from Wednesday to Sunday.

Oasis has a split personality like the atmosphere of many a fine-dining venue nowadays, Oasis-On-the-Sea is cheerfully lit and decked out with bright colours. The restaurant also has al fresco dining.

Mediterranean fare is the theme at the Oasis On-the-Sea Restaurant. Chef Darren’ dishes are innovative, daring and creative. Starters include: a beetroot and sorbet soup, rare seared tuna spring rolls Sliced buffalo mozzarella and much more.

“Four Immeasurables” weekend retreat experience with Dr Allan Wallace

Health& Beauty

Page 41: Phuketindex.com Magazine Vol.9

Some experiences take a long time but cannot be longer

in the memories than the time they took. Other experi-

ences, though taking little time, impress so much that

they can cause great changes after.

My weekend retreat experience with Dr. Allan Wallace was in

the second category.

Rather than spend my weekend hanging out as usual, I used

one weekend to participate in “Four Immeasurables Weekend

Retreat” at Phuket International Academy Mind Centre. It

was a good feeling and the best time for learning to be true with

myself and learning a way to live well with others.

The retreat was conducted in the specifi cally designed meditation

hall during 18 - 20 June 2010. Ordained as a Buddhist monk

by the Dalai Lama and living as a fully ordained monk for 12

years, Dr. Allan Wallace showed up at the evening of the first

day and began his teaching telling us how the 2 day retreat was

going to look like and pointing out the universality and opening

of Buddha’s dharma. We went through the story of Kalama Sutta

(The Buddha’s Charter of Free Inquiry) that encourages people

to not passively accept anything easily but, rather, constantly

question and personally test to identify those truths. Buddha did

not impose anyone to believe him and likewise I was required to

practice enlightenment myself.

The major topic of the retreat: The “Four Immeasurables”,

was about loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and

impartiality:

Loving Kindness is unconditional love without attachment.

By the mediation practice, this love was cultivated towards

ourselves then our loved ones, friends, teachers, strangers,

enemies, and fi nally towards all sentient beings.

Compassion is wanting others to be free from suffering without

discrimination. It happens when you feel sorry for someone and

really want to help. It is more than pity; it is taking action. Com-

passion helps uplift one’s mind to the thought that all sentient

beings are the same. There is no ‘me’ and ‘others’ that will lead

to heatedness or heated arguments.

Empathetic Joy is being happy with someone’s fortune or

Heal th& BeautyFeature

happiness. It refers to the potential of bliss and happiness of all

sentient beings. There will be no jealousy when we see people’s

achievements. It is an unselfi sh and very positive mental attitude

which is benefi cial for oneself and others.

Impartiality is not to distinguish between friends, enemies or

strangers, but regards every sentient being as equal, with a true

understanding regarding the principle of impermanence, the

principle of not-self, and the reality of existence. One will not be

happy or make it worse when others are suffering or are in trouble.

We should also help prevent one from doing negative actions.

Imagine when you are in Shamatha, not focusing of sense of

being, but in stability and clarity of the aspiration of Loving

Kindness, Compassion, Empathetic Joy, & Impartiality, and then

you are less self-centred and take in equally the joys and sorrows

of all people, friends, loved ones, relatives, and those who we

never met. When we keep in mind that we can all suffer under the

same condition; it is the uncertainty, the nature no one can deny.

What can bring us more pleasure when we see others’ happi-

ness?

The teachings went along with guided meditations, and discus-

sions regardless of whether we hold beliefs to any religion,

regardless of whether there will be a next life. It is peace and

happiness Dr. Alan said and we felt at that moment, a genuine

happiness that is deeper and lasts longer than hedonic pleasure.

Every person can also explore and experience more too.

Phuket International Academy Mind Centre will host two other

retreats this year. One is a six-week training programme for

instructors & those interested in “Cultivating Emotional Balance”

on Jul 18 - Aug 24. Another is an eight-week residential retreat

focused on the practice of “Shamatha” and the “Four Immeasur-

ables” on Sep 16 - Nov 11. For more information, please look

‘Cool Spa’ is located among the luxury pool villas of Sri panwa. The spa was named after its blue painted buildings that best reflect the cool and refreshing ambience of the leafy trees embracing the spa. As with the pool villas, ‘Cool Spa’ was built along the sloping hill with a great blending design of tropical contemporary and Sino – Portuguese architecture following the simply luxurious concept of the resort. So, you can be sure that being treated in the spa must be extremely delightful.

Apart from the verdant surroundings, the artificial waterfall falling down the spa terraces makes the spa really succulent or tempting as a juicy fruit. The splashing sound of the waterfall is like a melody lulling people’s minds while they are treated here.

Let arts lead the way

It is said that one ‘sense’ of the arts is a kind of talent which cannot be copied. It is signifi cantly valuable in any industry that asks for creativity, to make common an uncommon, to better the good or even extraordinary. The booming real estate industry in Phuket also

demands this ‘sense’ to add value to buildings. A house does require furniture, accents and proper composition to fi ll up vacant spaces, doesn’t it? But emptiness then becomes a real haven.

Phuketindex.com magazine, this issue, is going to introduce a smart woman who knows well what she should do with the gift she was given. Her ‘sense’ of the arts lead Mrs Nattanit (Nina) Suwit to a vibrant future with a furniture supply and decorative design business she started and dedicated herself in - called ‘Nina Decorative Design’.

The Target“Large or small, the orders sti l l have the same importance to us.” This was being emphasized in part of our conversation when we asked about her target customers. “We welcome anyone with a house or villa or apartment who wants indoor or outdoor furniture, or outdoor features.” She added: “We have stock in our showroom but specialize more in custom orders for clients such as hotels and projects requiring specifi c furniture or artifacts. We also get a number of clients who are just looking for something different for their house. “

The ProductsNina Decorative Design supplies indoor and outdoor furniture including art, lamps, mirrors, pots, water features, statues and many other ranges. “We are very strong on our ability to supply custom-ordered art out of our offi ce in China and have a good range in stock. The materials we use are very diverse from teak, mahogany and mango woods to aluminum, copper, stone, GRC (Glass-fi bre Reinforced Concrete), resin, Terrazzo, glass mosaic, fabrics and all the natural weaves like water-hyacinth, sea-grass, rattan and Abacca.” Really all kinds and all styles.

The Inspiration“I love finishing a room setting and seeing the client very happy or when the client visits the showroom it feels really good helping them choose beautiful ranges for their house or project. Making them happy is part of my job and what inspires me a lot.”

Many thanks to Mrs Nina for sharing her valuable time with us, as she likes to use most of her spare time traveling overseas to source ranges and taking care of her lovely 8 year-old son.

Home & DécorDécorTalk

The BeginningMrs Nattanit or ‘Nina’ told us about the beginning of Nina Decorative Design; it started about three years ago. “Before this, I was working with projects and hotels in my last company supplying awnings and cushions and I noticed there was always a need in Phuket for good quality, well-priced furniture. I heard clients complain about furniture being too expensive and taking too long to arrive. In the case of indoor wood furniture from Thailand, they had many problems splitting later. Hence, I decided to source indoor/outdoor furniture from Indonesia.”

The PrincipleWe still wonder how come a person with no degree or educational background about art or decoration would risk herself in this industry. She revealed: “Actually, I have been involved in manufacturing and providing awnings and cushions to retail and project clients over the last 15 years. During the time I have developed a good eye for colour co-ordination and product mix especially at the concept stage of a project. I have considered some of the design courses available but have always found there is no substitute for practical experience and natural ability.”

The ConnectionIf you are not the only one or the fi rst mover, you have to try hard to not drown and fi nd yourself a standpoint in the industry. For Nina Decorative Design, in her case she was a follower; Mrs Nina explained it was a connection that played the leading role. “I am fortunate my partner, Alan, has a wholesale furniture company in Australia supplying over 200 shops and has an outdoor furniture factory and warehouses in Indonesia. He also supplies hotels with artifacts and furniture all over the world. So getting the same prices and support in Indonesia has enabled me to supply my clients in Phuket with products at a very good quality and price.”

ProjectOverview

Being in a high hill position where we are now allows us to see a lot of developments rising in Phuket, from north to south, from east to west. Many projects we also visited were likeable. Some projects amazed us with the creativity of designers. Some show great attention in every detail. However, there were only a few we totally fell in love with, during our very fi rst steps inside. There are few projects that can evoke our thirst for buying. Sincerely, La Colline is one of those.

Phuketindex.com visited La Colline’s show house one day by invitation of the developer “Property 55” and its discerning director, Mr. Alain Cohen. We were greeted warmly by the team even though they were busy and putting their concentration into the project’s accomplishment, on the verdant hills overlooking the Andaman Ocean, in one of the quietest corners in Phuket, near Layan beach.

La Colline’s show house has a bit of a strange layout - though still very much impressive. Entering by foot from the front, you go under its arched entrance and walk along the sidewalk which is beside a nature loving idea, a lovely

The villas were built on an open plan layout and designed to take advantage of the tropical climate. The wise use of natural materials and well positioned fl oor-to-ceiling windows maximise the flow of natural breezes and let natural light in all year round, for comfort and energy saving.

Three guestrooms are discreetly isolated from the main building which means guests can independently access their rooms without disturbing the owner. All bedrooms with

en suite bathrooms are spacious, well appointed and allow a direct access to landscaped garden. The master bedroom & bathroom en suite can be reached by the corridor and another staircase on the left side of building. It is top notch with a spacious bathroom featuring an outdoor Jacuzzi, home automation solutions for lighting, entertainment and security, 180 degree ocean vistas and the privilege of a swimming pool – just a step away. A swimming pool laps up to the lounge area. Backed behind the deck is a refreshment zone with storage and bar counter island - ideal for both everyday relaxation and occasional parties. A modern kitchen on the upper floor is equipped with a fridge, dishwashing machine, state of the art oven etc. (optional). Connected to the kitchen on a higher level, the dining room and living area provides lots of space. With huge windows on either side, you can enjoy a picturesque view of the Andaman Sea just metres above the sea level and a fresh sea breeze without an obstruction.

Scheduled to be complete later this year, the whole project consists of 17 villas, a club house and two pond water reservoirs for internal use. Each villa is being built on an elevated level of a lush hill. The design and layout of the buildings are optimized to ensure an unobstructed panorama. There are only three villas now left to sell. Buying one could make you a neighbor of a famous name you don’t normally expect. For the rest of you, let the pictures help your imagination.

its entrance road from Cherng Talay vil lage has attracted many entrepreneurs to open shops, businesses, restaurants, and real estate projects nearby, trying to ‘cash in’ on the affluent tourists and now residents passing by, perhaps on the way to the trendy Surin beach or lively Patong beach also nearby.

Now the vacant land, that used to be the last space before the village,is being developed as the new ‘The Explorer Phuket’ residential and retail project, by The Explorer Co., Ltd. It is set to raise the bar again for high quality shops, houses and buyers. The project is on a large 57 rai or 22.5 acres of land plot on the west side of the road from the Cherng Talay junction to Laguna Phuket entrance. It will comprise

The Plaza is now under construction and will be complete in July 2011 as the first part of the project. It features its own parking spaces, covered walkways and 3-storey commercial buildings. When finished, there are bound to be a number of brand-name restaurants and stores to enjoy. The usage space in each is 237.5 sqm. and if interested be quick, as the units are now on sale at 15 million baht and apparently going quickly.

The pool villas will comprise 78 units in two types: A for 39 units with single storey 2 bedroomed units, while type B is for 39 units with double storey 3 bedroomed units with the master bedroom and Jacuzzi on the upper fl oor. Both come with a car space and maid’s (or driver’s) quarter, so your maid or driver can park the car(s) for you and be on your beck and call almost immediately! The condominiums’ penthouses are special, not just special, with a rooftop swimming pool and clubhouse for relaxation. They should also provide nice Andaman sea-views with the Bangtao beach just a kilometre away.

The fi rst phase of the residential project is scheduled to be completed in July 2012. Looking at the plans, there are no signs or plans for a big shopping ‘mall ’,

conference centre, nor a four star resort hotel as reported elsewhere, so ‘The Explorer Phuket’ should provide a relaxed sophisticated ambience to explore nice niche shops near to hospitable homes. You can imagine, or really experience if you go there, enjoying some hassle-free shopping, then a cup of latte coffee or a glass of wine with fellow customers and clients in a chic cafe, or clubhouse, and then inviting them back for a short stroll to your impressive villa or condo, without having to call the driver for the car! It was another special occasion when we had a chance to chat with newly appointed General Manager of the Renaissance Phuket Resort and Spa. The hotel is the first Renaissance property in Phuket and the new brand voice of the Renaissance opened early this year. General Manager Jason Nuell left us an image of a professional, an enthusiast and a positive thinker – obviously you can see this from his profi le, personality and conversation if you read on.

Please tell us a bit about your career path? My previous role was as Area Director of Operations in Marriott Hotels South East Asia. Prior to this assignment, I was the Director of Operations

at JW Marriott Mumbai in 2005 and Director of Operations at Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa in Australia in 2003, where I began

my Marriott career.

What is the difference between your responsibilities you had in Hong Kong and now in Phuket?

My role in Hong Kong Corporate Office was the Area Director of Operations looking after the

overall operation of Rooms and Food & Beverage outlets of 30 hotels within 7 countries around

the Asia Pacifi c region, including hiring the leadership operation team for the recently

opened 9 hotels in the area, while for Renaissance Phuket my role is shifted

to be more specifi c in every department operation including positioning of the resort with the new Renaissance Brand Voice.

From your experience, is the Phuket market different from Hong Kong? Is it making it more diffi cult or easier to handle?Phuket is primarily more leisure driven where as Hong Kong has its share of corporate trade, claiming its fair position as a Global Financial Centre. The

with waterfall features. And the most important part not to be missed is our people, I believe what set us apart from the rest is the team we have assembled at the resort, I’m very proud of the team and they will do anything to make our customers love them. Is it challenging opening a hotel in the current situation with Thailand’s unrest just under control? What is the plan?As Marriott hotels worldwide have experience over these past 80 years, having been through many different crisis, we are confi dent that with such experience and with the kind of service Marriott associates or Renaissance Ambassadorscan provide, we will be going through this challenge just fi ne. How about the grand opening? Our grand opening is planned for October to coincide with the Renaissance Miami Beach which is also another new brand voice of Renaissance. There will be a celebration event on the same night using a VDO link between two resorts, some international performances and entertainment. We will also be inviting top VIPs and media within Thailand and nearby to join our party.

continually strive to provide high quality of service and experience to ensure that every guest has a fulfilling stay that enables them to relax and return to us. Don’t you think there are enough hotels in Phuket? How is Renaissance Phuket going to catch people‘s attention? There are several “accommodation options” available in Phuket that cater to the needs of different kinds of travelers. Renaissance brings to Phuket a unique and stylish product of Marriott to north Phuket on Mai Khao beach offering a comfortably cool resort for independently minded travelers in the relaxing natural environment and tranquil experience to couples, honeymooners and for fami ly fun. A KIDS CLUB AT ITS BEST

Page 78: Phuketindex.com Magazine Vol.9

From May to the end of October, or about

half year, Phuket Island is covered by

rain in most areas as we are under the

infl uence of the southwest monsoon that

brings moist hot air from the ocean over Phuket and

southern Thailand. It rains on average more than 15

days a month throughout the ‘green’ season, but the

monsoon wind and currents also bring waves in the

sea as big as 2 - 4 meters high. The red warning fl ags

along the beach become the norm and swimmers

are discouraged. The heavy rain, big waves and

dull skies might keep some away from the beach or

even make them scared of the island. The weather

conditions make life in Phuket a bit slow and lacking

in colour which is usually painted by crowds of travellers.

But for some, the monsoon season is just like a ‘happy

hour’ they’re counting on, not just for discounts, but

as the best time for surfi ng in Phuket.

Admittedly Phuket is not an origin or early source

of surfi ng like Waikiki in the “Aloha” State of Hawaii.

Its waves defi nitely cannot beat the Gold Coast of

Australia, nor even compare to those of Bali in

Indonesia or other top surfi ng destinations of the

world. However it can be another destination for

those who would like to start learning the art of

balancing on a board and those who would love to

raise their XP or eXperience Points level. “Phuket

is the only place in Thailand you can surf when

the waves are high enough and the wind is not too

strong”, said Chanin Aiyarak or ‘Joob’, formerly of

the Phuket Board Riders Club, & now President of

Surfi ng Thailand organization.

Different beaches give different waves and wind

conditions. Popular beaches are those on the west

coast including Kata, Karon, Kalim, Kamala and Surin,

plus on the south-side at Nai Harn. Among these,

people say Kata offers the best board riding and easily

becomes the many surfers’ favourite beach. When

combined with its attractive backdrop, it is no wonder

why Kata is always chosen for a number of competitions.

Quiksilver will again sponsor this year’s contest after

a hugely successful Quiksilver Thailand Surf Series

2009 that attracted over a hundred participating

surfers from Thailand and around the world such

as Australia, Japan, France, Indonesia, Hawaii in

USA, to name just a few. ‘Joob’ revealed that 2010

event will differ from last year’s event. “There will be

no more series, no separate contests on Kalim and

Kamala Beach. During 22-26 September, 2010, the

competition will be held at Kata beach only, in one

big event, to gear up the publicity and awareness.”

From a small contest a few board riders organized

just for the sake of their own fun, to a vast interna-

tional event to highlight Phuket as a friendly qualifi ed

surfi ng destination, all Phuket board riders perhaps

just want to see is the visitors happy with the activity

and the hosts. “We will be happy to see Phuket’s

young blood rookies try to overcome the waves and

cherish the beautiful nature we have. Come out to

the beach. It’s ours.”

While many people keep complaining

about the bad weather, a group of

Flashback to 1984 when an abandoned tin mine in Bangtao Bay was livened up by the hands of Thai Wah Resorts Development Co., Ltd., later known as The Laguna Resorts & Hotels Public Co., Ltd, who invested a lot of money and transformed the first plot of land into a beautiful exotic resort named Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket. This was the very fi rst property of the Laguna Phuket complex, which keeps providing an outstanding service and offers great value holiday experiences for its guests on its 22nd year of success.

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket boasts a beautiful concept that has been inspired by King Rama VI’s wondrous utopia for more than 60 years and surely promises to continue the tradition. The resort is well known for its distinctive neo-colonial style, blended with variations of traditional Thai elements incorporated throughout the resort. It has a dramatic backdrop of serene lagoons, a pristine white sandy beach and unbeatable Andaman Sea - just a few steps away - that accentuates its elegance and makes it a wonderful destination.

everyone to treat themselves with a wide variety of dishes from all over the world served at Laguna Café. The Poolside Café is situated by a large swimming pool providing drinks and snacks until sunset. A place to sit back and relax, Horizon Lounge offers magnifi cent views, morning coffee or tea, tropical exotic drinks or a glass of Chardonnay and live entertainment when the night falls.

Beyond an attempt to trigger your taste buds, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket also considers activities and recreations the essential part to complete a journey. The resort therefore offers a wide variety of facilities, including a swimming pool, tennis courts, Fitness Centre, Recreation Centre, Kids’ Club, games room, jogging track, three-hole pitch and putt, water sports and the Angsana Spa. And as part of Asia’s first integrated resort, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket guests are privileged to access its 18-hole golf course, horse riding and an outdoor adventure training centre, as well as Camp Laguna for the children and other facilities all located within the Laguna Phuket complex.

Since Phuket has been promoted for MICE business, the resort, from an impeccable potential they already have, continuously develops a strong reputation as one of the leading specialists and venues for MICE

groups. Hundreds of small to medium size groups visit and pursue their purpose from time to time. Whether it is Casuarina Beach, Dusit Laguna hall, Suriyan, or Chantra, each room comes equipped with the latest amenities to support any kind of function.

By this coming high season, the resort’s 450 Million Baht refurbishing program of 67 Deluxe rooms will reach its completion. The management revealed the new look will be more stylish but still twirl around traditional Thai accents. The smooth granite underfoot, modern mosaic bathrooms, & private balcony will enhance guest relaxation experiences. The flat screen TV’s, cable network, WIFI and new writing desk will please business travelers.

With the sea lapping at your door step, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket lies along Bangtao Bay on the west coast of Phuket, just 10 minutes’ drive from The Two Heroines Monuments and 30 minutes’ drive from Phuket International Airport.

As good as the picture is on modern high defi nition televisions, the image on the screen is still locked in two dimensions. Many manufacturers are starting to make, or at least announce, televisions that will bring your viewing experience into the 3rd Dimension or 3D. Some of you may remember going down to the local 7-11 to pick up those paper glasses with the red and blue cellophane lenses to watch with. The idea behind those paper 3D glasses is actually much older but the basic concept continues today. 3D TV works because we have 2 eyes and space between them. Our eyes see objects at a slightly different angle and our brain uses this information to reliably calculate distance or depth, especially with objects within 20 feet. 3D media uses this natural depth perception by sending a different image to each eye, while our brains do the rest.

Shopping& MartFeature

Technology Guide for 2010 and beyond

Future 3D TV TechnologyGlasses are widely considered to be the weak link in the 3D chain. Consumers would much rather be able to view 3D without having to don any accessories. This is especially true of people who already wear corrective lenses and have to wear glasses over their lenses to view 3D TV.

The most advanced method of showing 3D uses a special screen that can direct separate images to each eye. effect will fall apart or even invert. These screens, and the media that utilizes them, are still very rare. Larger versions of this technology are probably on the way but they suffer from two issues: price, and the very limited view angle & distance.

Who is making 3D Televisions? While it was originally limited to Digital Light Processing or DLP televisions, 3D capability is becoming available on all the major HDTV technologies. At the Consumer Electronics Show or CES 2010 in Las Vegas, Panasonic introduced the VT25 series plasmas which offer full 1080p 3D to each eye and come equipped

with everything needed to view 3D content. Sony, Samsung, Toshiba, Sharp, LG and others displayed both 3D capable traditional and Light Emitting Diode or LED backlit Liquid Crystal Display or LCDs.

What 3D Content is available? Most of the 3D content in the near future will be disc based, 3D Blu Ray movies and 3D DVDs. For these you will need both a compatible TV and player. DirecTV was at CES 2010, showing off 3D content that will be available using their service.

*Chanintat Pachantabutr or ‘Mon’ is one of Phuket’s young blood,

known for his dynamic role as an executive at

the island’s illustrious restaurant, Kan Eang@pier. He is presently

the creator and supervisor of his new development ‘Patak Villa’, a

premium residential and commercial building project. The project

is positively regarded for its high quality, stylish architecture, and

functions that fit lifestyle. Thus it is already very successful.

We are really eager to know what an executive, who has experience

in property development and a young man who has such a modern

lifestyle, thinks about home décor and what he recommends for home

lovers?

“I try to choose and put the best things into home construction to

make sure that the output will have quality. Other than this, pay a

lot of attention to decoration as I believe this is the way to spark

a light for living in any home. It will add some sense of aesthetics

and inspire a pleasant touch. The process is one of my favorites.

It’s really fun, challenging and a pride of course if we are able to

transform our imagination into reality whether it is kitchen, bed-

room, bathroom or living space. It’s such a creative step.

“For me, fi nding items that fi t the needs is not a problem but fi nding

those that really ‘match’ my vision is not easy. Homewroks Phuket

is one of the very fi rst destinations I automatically head to, when-

ever I look for items or even when I need inspiration. Homeworks

Phuket keeps me up to date with the trends and gives me some

ideas to use with my own business. It is the place that is always

worth a visit and I’m sure it is the same for other home lovers as

well.”

Every year, they say there are over 5 million tourists from all over the world coming to Phuket. The high number

of the tourists refl ects that the island is very attractive among those

people. Most of them spend their vacation by snorkeling, sailing, eating

fresh seafood, having romantic dinners by the sea, and staying

overnight, some in luxurious hotels.

Phuket Sanook’ (‘Sanook’ being a Thai word meaning ‘enjoy’) is the defi nition of travelling to Phuket given by The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket’s Offi ce. Bangornrat Shinaprayoon, the Director of TAT Phuket, explains what they mean by ‘Phuket Sanook’; we also present you the favorite Sanook activities of people working in Phuket tourism.

What is Phuket Sanook?Director of TAT Phuket said “Before mentioning about the meaning of ‘Phuket Sanook’, I would like to make the readers understand the role of TAT Phuket in island tourism fi rst. TAT Phuket is the government organization that mainly promotes tourism in Phuket - to people in other parts of Thailand and the world.

‘Phuket Sanook’ can really happen with support from every sector in Phuket. TAT or other agencies have to

feel ‘sanook’ in our work to promote tourism. Business sectors have to enjoy offering interesting products and services for travelers. Locals should also have a passion to look after our homeland and act as good hosts. All is based on the same goal we have - that is to enhance Phuket’s tourism and we will all benefi t from doing this together.

‘Sanook’ activities that tourists should not miss are snorkeling, canoeing, & sailing to see the beautiful scenery of Phuket’s sea; eating international food such as European food, American food, India- Halal food, Japanese food, Chinese food and of course Thai food! Apart from this, Phuket offers cultural routes in Phuket Town with the locals’ lifestyle and old charming architecture that greatly reflect the origin of Phuket locals.

PhuketPhuketBangornrat Shinaprayoon

PhuketSanook

www.phuketindex.com 93

Page 94: Phuketindex.com Magazine Vol.9

All the services are given by service-minded staff. 40,000 rooms in hotels, with full facilities, are ready to serve all needs of tourists, like spas or Thai massages, etc. The abundant natural resources help tourists’ enjoy ‘Sanook’ experiences and the experience is even more enjoyable with the sincere smiles of the locals welcoming visitors coming to this island. Tourist’shaving ‘Sanook’ make locals smile too! Tourism is the heart of Phuket’s lifestyle and economy, so let’s make it ‘Sanook’.

Phuket is developing more ‘Sanook’ activities to maintain ‘Sanook’ feelings whenever people come to the island. Those activities are publicized via media, especially Phuket E-Magazine, TAT Phuket’s online magazine providing information about Phuket and an event calendar all year round. Moreover TAT Phuket support fun activities in Phuket order to make a lively atmosphere in the island’s tourism. Those activit ies include the Phuket Music Festival, Chinese New Year and Old Phuket Town Festival, Phuket King s Cup Regatta, Laguna Phuket triathlon, etc.

Phuket

Bangornrat Shinaprayoon

Apart from TAT Phuket, the local entrepreneurs or business owners join hands to establish associations to promote Phuket tourism and organize a lot of fun and interesting activities in order to attract tourists to Phuket.

To increase ‘Sanook’ experiences in Phuket, the related sectors have to be good hosts welcoming tourists to Phuket, as well as maintainnatural beauty. The tourists should be well taken care of; meanwhile, they should not be exploited by locals while they are traveling in the island.

Moreover, the government and private organizations together with TAT Phuket are helping to expand tourism markets of the island by invit ing new groups of tourists to travel here, such as wedding groups, diving groups, yachting groups, sport groups, and adventure groups. However, they are also trying to keep the existing groups of tourists coming. Phuket can welcome more tourists and the island will be developed in many aspects making it ready for the increasing numbers of visitors.”

“I like to go shopping at Naka Flea Market. There is a lot of cool stuff, especially second hand stuff and ‘ground’ shops (shops that display the products on the ground). The shops in the market always present trendy or updated products every week. I personally also prefer walking along the old buildings in Phuket town, rather than walking on the beach. The architecture is really elegant; that’s why I often show it to my friends coming to visit Phuket.”

“I often go sunbathing on the beach, especially on Kata Noi Beach. The beach is peaceful and clean, so it is such a good place for me to relax. I always take my friends for sun bathing there. Another thing I like to do in Phuket is scuba diving. I always join a scuba trip when my schedule is not so tight.”

The Asian Hospitality & Travel Show is primarily a ‘Trade Event’ which mainly targets the executives or key decision makers from within the industry and obviously buyers from neighboring countries. “It will attract travel agents and MICE from several countries in Asia including Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia and China. The visitors will be coming here on a fully Hosted Buyer Program which means we will be responsible for all their fl ights and accommodations to come here and meet with hotels - same as tourists,” Simon explains.

What else to expect at the show? Simon revealed they are also going to have professionally coordinated business appointments between the sellers, who are hotels and hospitality suppliers or buyers who are also travel agents and MICE planners; plus they also arrange networking meetings, seminars, competitions and demonstrations, lucky draw and prize giveaways, Job Club and other entertainments. “Business appointments and networking events are going to take place over two days. On the third day, there will be a cruise and a farewell party that will be a time for building up the network again between sellers and buyers.”

The show will be the fi rst time - in any exhibition of its kind - to feature a Job Club. “Phuket hotels always have problems recruiting people and what we are doing - the JobClub - is basically the best opportunity for them to fi nd staff. And for those who are looking for jobs, this will give them

“Asian Hospitality & Travel Show” will be taking place at Central Festival Phuket’s 3000 sqm air- conditioned Convention and Exhibitions Centre on October 1-3, 2010. The event is presented by Phuket International Academy, co–sponsored by Dewa and Cape Sienna, and supported by TAT - Thailand Authority Tourism, TCEB - Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau, & SKAL. Event Thailand, owned and managed by two SKAL committee members Jorge De la Torre and Simon Samaan, are the organizers for the show.

“Phuket never really had a travel and hospitality exhibition. For hotels, to attend exhibitions, they used to travel to Bangkok or to another country. This is the first time that an exhibition will bring buyers to meet the hotels and suppliers in Phuket. It is a great opportunity for hotels and other sellers to showcase their products and services directly to potential buyers and everyone in the hospitality and travel industry in Phuket without travelling so far. The event will help stimulate Phuket’s tourism,” says Simon Samaan who has over a decade’s experience in the industry as an organiser.

There will be at least 85 exhibitors showing off their best during the 3-day event. Many four to fi ve star hotels in Phuket apart from their sponsors like Radisson, JW Marriott, & Hilton to name a few, have confirmed their participation. The exhibitors will also include travel organizations, media, trade associations, event organizers and hospitality suppliers such as technology

Simon urged “Anyone out there in Phuket that is related to the hospitality and travel industry should come at least visit the event on the 1st - 3rd October. Anyone who is searching for new channels to showcase their products and services to the hotels, to the travel agents and MICE planners, should also exhibit in this exhibition. If you would like to exhibit, please register before 1 September 2010 by contacting [email protected] or 0847 680 536 or visit www.eventsthailand.net. Simon Samaan showed his confidence that the event will make Phuket more exposed among Asians saying “I think Phuket is already an international destination now. Everyday we have more and more international flights coming directly to Phuket via our own airport. It’s really an age for Phuket-based hotels to always participate in exhibi-tions that are taking place outside of Phuket. This is a very good opportunity to have a show in Phuket with the travel agents to come directly and see what Phuket has to offer.

Registration for Travel Agent/MICE is still open and will close on July 31st. After that, Event Thailand, the organizer will go through all the applications and select the 30 best buyers to join the hosted buyer program. Simon said “We
