4 | Editor’s Comment | The Installer

I was in a conversation with a colleague of mine from within the window, door and conservatory industry and he was telling me about an installerhe knows who is doing windows, doors, conservatories, guttering, loftconversions and extensions. He’s also got a team on kitchen fitting andtwo teams doing flooring - domestic mostly but small commercial if itcomes up. The guy apparently will fit TV arials, do a bit of gardening andeven lay drives if he thinks he can earn a bob or two. Although when Isay he, I clearly mean the people he employs...and that’s anyoneprepared to do a days graft. The installer guy doesn’t do any installingand he barely knocks on doors – he’s got staff to do that as well. He’smore the kinda chap that knows people – people who want to sub somework out or who’ve got a contract. He operates where and when hecan...some say he’s a bit shifty. Others say he is a fabulous businessman.

What do you say?

I still can’t believe how many installers will only turn their hand to whatthey know – windows, door etc and won’t even consider going back tosome of their old customers and offering them something new – or perhapsan overdue repair.

This month we have a fitting guide to multipoint locks – it’s a relativelysimple process and something most window and door fitters should knowhow to do anyway. Take a look – we are at a point where thousands ofthese things will need replacing. Then of course there’s locks. You don’thave to set out to become a locksmithing business...but there should beplenty of remedial and upgrade work out there. And neither of these twosuggestions are straying too far away from your core business.

Think what you might be able to do if you looked around at the skill youhave in your company; took a look at an economy on the rise; and thoughtto yourself ‘it’s now or never’ – grasp the range of opportunities whichmight help you expand your current window business as well as give youthe taste of something else.

Next month we will highlight the opportunities in a range of sectors...wehope we can make you think.

Skills shortageThe UK economy is losing out on £18 billion due to skills shortages, withhundreds of thousands of vacancies across the UK’s small businessesAlmost a quarter of small businesses surveyed currently have availablevacancies; however 16% had vacancies in the last month that they’vebeen unable to fill due to not finding a candidate with the required skillsSmall business decision makers spend over 100 hours a year looking forpotential candidates, training new staff and developing existing staff. Ineconomic output, this is worth an estimated £3,160. This figures rises to£7,450 for 18-34 year old small business decision makers who dedicatemore time to those activities than the older generations.

Just a thought – if you want to expand, start the process soon...coztomorrow might already be too late.

FENSA reports that the majority of its registeredbusinesses have embraced mandatory InsuranceBacked Guarantees (IBGs). The system set up byFENSA and its Approved Insurance Providersallows automatic notification of installations fromFENSA to the insurance company, automatic issuingof the IBG policies direct from the insurancecompany to the homeowner and billing direct fromthe insurance company to the installer. This system is working well says FENSA.

However, there is a stubborn minority of installersthat have yet to provide FENSA with details of theirchosen IBG provider and therefore currently cannotself-certify. The consequences for these installersare stark. If an installer does not issue (or payfor) an IBG policy for each job notified, thatcompany will be expelled from FENSA. Suchinstallers will also not be able to register withanother glazing Competent Persons Scheme, asthey are in breach of FENSA rules.

“There is no hiding place for installers duckingout of IBGs,” says FENSA managing directorChris Mayne. “Because the system iscomputerised, we can immediately see whichinstallers do not have an IBG supplier in place. They will be expelled from FENSA.”FENSA rules state: ‘To provide each customer

(other than a Local Authority or HousingAssociation) with an Insurance BackedGuarantee policy (conforming to requirementslaid down from time to time by FENSA) toprovide cover to the customer should theRegistered Business, for whatever reason, ceaseto trade’.Mayne adds: “We have a duty to those FENSA

registered businesses that are playing by therules. We cannot allow those installers thatbreak or ignore the scheme rules to carry on asusual. We will initiate the process to expel theseinstallers.” i

10 Wellington Place is a newcontemporary building located atthe heart of the Leeds businesshub. The building provides astunning vista across the citywhilst providing accommodationfor companies and organisationsseeking a prestigious anddistinctive landmark address.High performance glass supplied

by Saint-Gobain gives the buildingits striking form through theimpressive floor to ceiling glazingthat provides occupiers and visitorswith a platform through which tooverlook the city skyline and is key topromoting the project as a landmarkbuilding. The building features aninnovative exterior design and theglass facade helps create light andairy interior spaces in which peoplecan work, shop and relaxcomfortably. Saint-Gobain helped tocreate the glass façade design and its

modern exterior to create a contrastagainst the existing stonearchitecture in the area.Saint-Gobain Glass products

were chosen as the architectrequired a very specific amount ofsolar gain and light reflection in theglass façade. Aesthetically, the highperformance glazing complimentedthe building with its neutralappearance.10 Wellington Place achieved a

BREEAM Excellent rating withSaint-Gobain Glass contributingtowards this in two areas: thecompany’s high performance glasscoatings that reduced solar gain upto 88% and therefore reduced thebuilding’s dependence upon airconditioning; and the Life CycleAssessment which traces theproduct’s life cycle fromraw materials to the recycling ofused glass. i

Almost 300 delegates from across the private andpublic sectors attended the recent Passive HouseConference which the company considers a greatsuccess.Rehau commercial manager Kevin O’Neill explains: “We

were at the conference to increase awareness of the specialistproducts in our range which are suitable for Passive House pro-jects and to generate enquiries for our customers who fabricatethem. We met with a mix of architects, consultants, clients anddevelopers, many of whom showed a real interest in our com-posite products such as the Rehau Geneo window and ourRehau Polytec 50S composite curtain walling system.“The Passive House market is still fairly niche but the conference

showed just how quickly it could grow. We heard announce-ments, for example, from local authorities like Exeter that they willbe including Passive House in a number of their new build spec-ifications and we are now talking to a number of specialist con-sultants and architectural practices who are really championingits growth.“We are very positive about the opportunities whichwill be created for our customers in this market.” i

what and where to go to makeour online purchases from book-ing a hotel room to ordering fromAmazon? A fair number of us arechanging the way we researchand buy a company’s products orits services. K home sales hit theirhighest level of theyear in May this yearbut with this newscomes warnings of acooling off or even a

bubble burst. With pundits onboth sides pushing their views,it’s hard to see what will actuallytranspire. One thing is for sure –for the majority of UK families, the sheer expense related to mov-ing is not something easily cov-ered by hidden stashes of cash. This means installers still have abig opportunity to persuadehomeowners to improve ratherthan move.News from D&G Consulting-

suggests that the Orangery is be-coming increasingly popularamongst homeowners, no doubtdue to the fact they offer the ap-pearance of a traditional exten-sion, whilst offering the light, airyfeel of a conservatory. Whatwas once seen as a luxury prod-uct, is now much more common-place and as a result the range

he rate of energy efficiency– whether for windows, lighting or homeappliances for example –

can easily be measured andanalysed, using the A to G colourrating system that we are familiarwith in our everyday lives. Itenables us to qualify what theperformance levels are, whichaids our decision makingprocesses. Nigel Wood, of SFSintec, argues that an issue asimportant as security should bemeasured in the same simple wayto allow the fenestration industryand UK public to make educateddecisions on the productsinstalled.

A secure educationEnsuring that homes are securedwith a tamper-proof lock is oneelement which will reduceburglaries but the same emphasismust be placed on the hinge toensure complete security –something that manyhomeowners, notleast installersand fabricators, are unaware of.A door has two sides andtherefore two potential accesspoints, so if you upgrade the lockyou only secure 50% of the door. The lock and hinge must beconsidered holistically, as a badquality hinge can easily bedestroyed – allowing perpetratorsto prise a door or window openwith relative ease. Investing instate-of-the-art lock systems cantherefore be futile if aninadequate hinge has beeninstalled. For example, traditionalflag hinges are frequently used asa lower cost, make-do option butaside from their cumbersomedesign, they are easier todismantle because of a lack ofsupport at the top and tend todrop, leaving doors vulnerable totampering. If the product came

with a colour coded securityaccreditation, homeownerswould be able to filter out thesetypes of poorly performingproducts and make aninformed decision.

A-grade productsWhy would an end userchoose any less than thebest? The product markedwith a grade ‘A’ willinevitably get the mostinterest, leaving productsmarked grade ‘G’ to fall tothe wayside. And rightly so.If products such as hinges, locks and handles forexample were categorised inthis way, only the highestperforming and safest wouldbe specified and thusinstalled. Not only would thisinstil confidence and aheightened sense of securityfor the homeowner, but itwould be hoped that crimerates may fall too.

Security regulatedCurrently, the industry useslegislative guidelines tohelp specify the mostsuitable products. Itseparates the ‘compliant’with the ‘non-compliant’ butis this really enough to trulyunderstand the performanceof a product? While theindustry is now clearer onthe legislation it must adhereto, unfortunately, it is still thecase that PAS 24 is onlyused on request for thosewho know about it.Therefore, I’m suggestingthere is a clearaccreditation scheme toenable homeowners tochoose the product that willoffer them the performancethey require. i

PC Henderson, ani n t e r n a t i o n a lmanufacturer of door

hardware systems, hasintroduced a new Twinboltsystem. This now enables thedoor to be locked internally atthe top and bottom of thedoor by turning one handle90 degrees, removing theneed to manually engagetwo flush bolts.

Hendersons identifiedthe demand in theresidential architecturalmarket for the Twinbolt, offering two points ofdiscreet security withthrow rods top andbottom. Andrew Royle, UKCommercial Directorcomments: “The newTwinbolt locking systemoffers an alternative tocustomers who do notwant to have to manually

engage two flush boltswhen locking the swingdoor. Withoutcompromising on security, the throw rods are engagedsimultaneously by turningthe satin finish handle 90degrees which then locksthe door into position."For added security andconvenience Twinboltincorporates the YaleSecuriturn removablethumbturn. Thisprovides the flexibility ofa keyed cylinder lockwhen required whilstallowing the use of athumbturn for everydayconvenience which caneasily be removed when

required by using thespecialist tool providedwithin the kit.”

The fact is ifour customers order online andpay online then that saves ustime and we should share thosesavings with them rather thankeeping them for ourselves. That’s why we are offering all ofour customers a £10 discountwhen they order online and afurther £10 discount when theypay online. It is a part of ourcustomer ethos – it has to be apartnership to succeed in thelong term and hopefully offeringthese discounts shows that weare serious when we say this. Itis a tangible sign of us givingsomething back to ourcustomers where we bothbenefit.

£50 off your first online orderThere is also a first orderdiscount of £50 available. Wewould urge all installers to takeadvantage of it. It will give themthe opportunity to see just howsimple the ordering system is touse, how versatile the productrange is and just how well thecustomer service and deliverysystem we have implementedworks to support them once theirorders have been placed.

Ihave said for some time thatordering online was a must forcomposite door suppliers intoday’s modern market. It is

the way the industry operatesand was very much on the wishlist of all the people we hadspoken to since we launchedTruedor. The response to our launch has

been fantastic – even better thanwe expected. It gives ourcustomers the flexibility tooperate their businesses at timeswhich suit them so they are notdependent on our sales office toplace their orders...they can dothat at any time.

Products and marketing supportWe knew that making the onlineordering system live was goingto be a great boost for ourcustomers, and for ourselves. When we set out to launchTruedor we were very clear on anumber of things – we would

have an outstanding productrange, great marketing supportand we would make customerservice the kingpin of ouroffering. Having the onlineordering system is very much apart of the customer serviceoffering. We know from the feedback

we have received so far that wehave got our product range andour service levels exactly as ourcustomers want them. Thedialogue we have had with themfrom the start about what theyexpect from us will continue toensure that we maintain thehighest standards. This willenable us to continue to talk tothem about what else they wouldlike from us in the future. Thisdialogue with our customers isessential for success in the longterm as we want to develop aloyal customer base which iswith us for years to come. Wefully recognise that loyalty is atwo-way thing.

Aztec Windows isthe latest compa-ny to sign-up asan affiliate sup-plier to windowindustry stan-dards organisa-tion, NetworkVeka. The Coventrybased company fabri-cates high-spec products from The Veka UK Group - the use ofwhich is a pre-requisite for Network Veka's 150-strong member-ship.One product that particularly factored in Aztec's affiliate mem-

bership is Halo's FlushSash system (pictured in situ) which, whilefaithful to the appearance of traditional wooden framed win-dows, provides all the modernday benefits of PVC-U replace-ments.John Ogilvie, MD of Network Veka, says: “Our members are

keen to promote and sell products from The Veka UK Group. TheFlushSash window through Aztec is a good example of this.”Aztec, which recently celebrated its 25th year of trading, was

the first Halo customer to begin fabricating the FlushSash system. The Network instantly saw the potential in FlushSash, especiallyfor properties situated in conservation areas where authenticlooks are all-important. networkveka.co.uki

Composite Door CNC fabricators can now make seven popular doorstyles from just one door blank with the latest from DoorCo - the 6/4Combi which has a midrail with the woodgrain pattern runningthrough from top to bottom, enabling it to be made into any of thefollowing styles: Six Panel Solid; Twin Vertical; Twin Top; Twin Topwith Mid Panel; Half Glazed; Full Glazed; Four Glazed (twin and bot-tom).This not only makes the door extremely versatile but also drasti-

cally cuts the need for stock, as DoorCo MD Dan Sullivan explains:“Stock is always a challenge for all door fabricators especially forthe lower volume fabricators because of the range of options avail-able. The 6/4 Combi brings together seven of the most popular styleswhile taking up less space, tying up less money and simplifyingordering and invoicing." capstonedoor.co.uki

Network Veka has, over an 18-year his-tory, settled remedi-al insurance claimstotalling £1m. Theorganisation saysthat such a lowamount pays testa-ment to the work-manship of its mem-bers andspecification of theproducts supplied.Besides its commitment

to using Veka products,Network Veka accepts

only companies that can demonstrate superior levels of work-manship, then invests in them to ensure their standards maintainand even surpass desired levels. Consequently, its confidence inthe service provided means Network Veka member companiescan offer their customers the organisation's 10-year insurancebacked guarantees for all aspects of the installation.Network Veka MD, John Ogilvie explains: “Of course, we

hope Network Veka customers never have to claim on theirinsurance but we also want them to know that we have a trackrecord of paying for legitimate claims. It's why Network Vekaonly has the best installers – it's in our interest to ensure they doquality work, otherwise we'll end up paying for it.”networkveka.co.uk

Tradelink, the manufacturer of doors, windows, conservatories and sealedunits has introduced the FUHR dual locking mechanism on its stable door. This changes the stable offering for the better,” says Jim Moody, MD.“In the past stable doors have proved cumbersome and difficult to use, meaning

plenty of call-backs for adjustment," continues Moody. "Our new locking mechanismis light years away from this old model. The FUHR stable door gearing is two lockingmechanisms which operate independently or in tandem for flexibility and security, while offering the same functionality as you would find on traditional timber prod-ucts. The lower opening sash also incorporates a simple turn dead-lock lever ratherthan a second set of handles in the vertical or horizontal plane.“There has been a resurgence in stable doors recently, in part thanks to the popu-

larity of composite doors but where this style is required on the back of a property homeowners are still choosingPVC-U over composite. Of course we can offer both options but we wanted our installer customers to be armedwith the best PVC-U option available. With the addition of this new gearing, a range of colour options includingblack, grey, cream and chartwell green and a lead time of 7 days, we believe we have done just that.”
