GMB union member’s workingat Anglian Windows have re-jected a proposal to cut hoursand pay. The companyagreed to scrap the cuts at the11th hour to avoid strike action.

A ballot had asked GMB mem-bers to accept or reject the pro-posals to decrease wages by8.3% and to utilise agency staffat Anglian's Norwich site.

The recommendation given byGMB was to reject the offer. Fol-lowing extensive members’ feed-back being relayed to thecompany and communication topre warn that GMB and its mem-bers would be willing to fight tosecure pay and working hoursthe company waited until

Wednesday 3rd July before con-firming that the consultation hasnow stopped. Due to the 11thhour announcement by AnglianWindows GMB members de-cided to continue the ballot andattend a mass meeting at theGas Club in Norwich on Friday5th July where the indicative bal-lot papers were counted. Over200 members attended the meet-ing and gave an overwhelmingresponse of 97% to reject theoffer made by the company.

Keith Dixon, GMB Regional Or-ganiser said: “I am pleased onbehalf of our GMB members thatthe company finally realised thatthey were close to an industrialdispute regarding the proposal.

“Possible strike action is some-thing we all want to avoid. I feelwe were heading at speed to thisdue to the company’s refusal tonegotiate and failure to considerthe concerns of the workforce.

“I previously met with the com-pany and offered the opportu-nity to open negotiations and tolook to see if there was an ami-cable solution which could be se-cured. At that time the requestwas rejected.

“The offer still remains openand I will write to the companyto reaffirm. I am proud that ourmembers united to oppose theproposal and to fight any furtherattempt to reduce their pay andworking hours.” i

July 3 saw the HSE release their annualprovisional workplace fatality figures forwork-related fatal injuries for 2018/19. 147workers died between April 2018 andMarch 2019.

There has been a long-term reduction in thenumber of fatalities since 1981. Although2018/19 saw an increase of 6 workplace fa-talities from 2017/18, the number has re-mained broadly level in recent years. Followingthe release, HSE Chair Martin Temple said: “Theworkplace fatality statistics are a reminder thatdespite the UK’s world leading position in healthand safety, we cannot become complacent aswe seek to fulfil our mission in preventing injury, ill health and death at work.”

Temple continued: “These statistics also remindus that, in certain sectors of the economy, work-place deaths remain worryingly high. Whateverthe sector, we should remember that any changein numbers provides little comfort to the family, friends and colleagues of the 147 whose liveswere cut short this year while doing their job.”

Falls and being struckThe three most common causes of fatal injuriescontinue to be workers falling from height (40),being struck by a moving vehicle (30) and beingstruck by a moving object (16), accounting fornearly 60 per cent of fatal injuries in 2018/19.

Asbestos – killed 2,523Mesothelioma, which is contracted through pastexposure to asbestos and is one of the few work-related diseases where deaths can be counted di-rectly, killed 2,523 in Great Britain in 2017 – abroadly similar number to the previous five years. The current figures are largely a consequence ofoccupational asbestos exposures that occurredbefore 1980. Annual deaths are expected to re-main broadly at current levels for the rest of thedecade before beginning to reduce in number.

PublicIn addition, there were also 92 members of thepublic fatally injured in incidents connected towork in 2018/2019. i

The government target of building 300,000homes a year will remain a pipe dreambased on current trends, says a leading con-struction agency.

New official figures published at the beginningof July show a decrease in the number of new buildhomes being started or completed in England overthe latest quarter (to March 2019) and only a smallrise over the last 12 months. According to the Min-istry of Housing, Communities and Local Govern-ment, the new build dwellings figures should beregarded as the leading indicator of overall hous-ing supply, but the figures show that:• New build dwelling starts in England were esti-mated at 36,630 in the latest quarter, a 9 per centdecrease compared to the previous 3 months anda 9 per cent decrease on a year earlier.• Completions were estimated at 42,870, a 1 per

cent decrease from the previous quarter.Clive Docwra, MD of construction consulting and

design agency McBains, said: “The governmenthas set a target of building 300,000 homes a yearby the mid 2020s but these figures show that thiswill remain a pipe dream unless measures are im-plemented to help boost the number of new buildstarts and completions.

“These figures bear out that construction firms aresuffering from uncertainties over Brexit – investorsare wary of committing to new projects while theoutcome remains unclear, while skills shortages, which are already acute, will bite further unless theindustry is able to recruit skilled workers from over-seas.

“The high cost of materials is also impacting onthe amount companies can build, and access to fi-nance is often difficult to come by.” i

Mis-measures happen. Weare all human. However, thereare those ones which can bedealt with without compro-mising standards and thosewhich really require a newframe.

Unfortunately, installers want toinstall so they can be paid, andthe boss does not want the costof another frame - and an irateconsumer. So the decision to‘make it fit’ is the usual result. Thedecision to ‘make it fit’ howevercan be a costly mistake.

Too tallTake a look at the photo at-tached. The door frame wasmeasured too tall, therefore theinstallers made the decision to re-move the course of brick below

the DPC. This of course not onlycompromised the damp resistingability of the property but also in-corporated a detail which is notrecognised in any British Stan-dard or Building Regs.

Ask yourself the questionShould you experience a mis-measure on site then you mustask yourself the question – ‘willthis installation satisfy the stan-dards?’ If you are not sure thatthe British Standard or BuildingRegs will be met, then don’tleave the job without arranginga replacement. You are Profes-sional Installers, you must main-tain your standards and thestandards that govern theprofession.Don.

Jack Aluminium’s JD47 non-thermal commercial doorhas been used to replace atired timber frame at theheadquarters of AdullamHomes Housing Associationin West Bromwich.

Aluminium Composite Solu-tions, from Bromsgrove, selectedthe JD47 door as part of ascheme of improvements at theHousing Association’s HQ. TheJD47 door has been fitted with acontinuous hinge, to achievean even distribution of theload and improve operationalperformance.

Often used in high-traffic en-trances the JD47 commercialdoor has been cleverly designedand adapted for this bespoke in-stallation. An anti-finger trapdoor stile is a round back profile, which is often used in publicplaces such as schools and hos-

pitals. As the door pivots, thestile leaves a minimal gap to en-sure fingers, clothing or handscannot accidentally be injured if

placed in the way of a closingdoor.

Aluminium Composite Solu-tions worked with Jack Alu-minium to select the rightcommercial door for this project.Thermal efficiency and securitywere other factors taken into con-sideration at this busy office.

Tony Adamson, project man-ager at Aluminium CompositeSolutions, said: “At WalterMoore House, we needed aheavy-duty door that was robust, that’s why we selected a JD47door with a normal door stileand a continuous hinge. It alsolooked good and offered highperformance.”

CDW Systems, the trade andcommercial fabricator, hasjoined forces with automaticdoor specialists Prosale tooffer installer customers train-ing around automated doors.

Doork, The new training ses-sions extend a long and success-ful partnership between the twofirms whereby CDW manufac-tures and supplies aluminiumdoors, ready for Prosale to applytheir automated gearing.

The training takes place at Pros-ale’s state-of-the-art facilities inGloucester and is designed togive installers a completeoverview of specifying and in-stalling sliding, swinging and re-volving automatic doors.

Mike Davis, MD of CDW Sys-

tems, says: “Whilstautomatic doorsmay be a popularfeature in a wide va-riety of commercialprojects, they canstill be complex. Ifspecified or installedincorrectly, they could quite eas-ily cause projects to be delayedor lead to costly call-backs to site.

“We aim to give installers com-plete product and installationtraining on a wide range of doorsystems. This not only ensuresprojects are completed correctlybut reputations are safeguardedand relationships are protected.”

Mike Coggins, Director at Pros-ale Automatic Doors adds: “Thetraining rigs supplied by CDW

are not only used for our trainingbut also by the ADIA (AutomaticDoor Installation Association). TheADIA frequently use our rigs andtraining facilities for their courses. It’s all part of our commitment togive installers across the UK thesupport and confidence to installboth of our companies’ productsin all kinds of residential and com-mercial projects.”

Roofs & Rooflights

Ask anyone what they wantmost out of their home andthe chances are they’ll sayspace and light, writesGareth Thomas at AtlasGlazed Roof Solutions.

Today’s homeowners yearn forthose large open-plan areaswhere they can cook, dine, en-tertain and relax and more ofthem than ever are choosing asingle storey, flat roof extensioninstead of a traditional conserva-tory or orangery. With betterthermal qualities that allow forall-year round usage, these con-temporary extensions typicallyprovide more floor space andadd greater value to propertiesthan conservatories.

Glazing has become an essen-tial component of these exten-sions and lighting from above isa trick favoured by architectsand designers, who know allabout the benefits to our healthand wellbeing of spending timein light-filled spaces. And for me,the roof lantern is one of the mosteffective (and impressive) waysto bring daylight into a home.

Winning installationsDemand for glazed lanterns hassurged in recent years and theAtlas lantern has gained valu-able market share becausehomeowners appreciate theclean lines and uncluttered lookof the roof - with less visible pro-file and more glass.

Installation of the MonthThe Atlas lantern has won overinstallers throughout the UK andeach month we see dozens ofamazing Atlas lantern installa-tions entered into our Installationof the Month competition. Thequality of these installations is in-credible. Last year, more thanhalf of our Installation of theMonth competition winners en-tered an Atlas lantern installationinto the contest. And now we’revery excited to be seeing lots ofinstallations featuring our newLantern 2.0, which waslaunched in January 2019. Allthe photos of the new lantern –the slimmest non-bonded roof inthe industry – show just what anexceptional looking product it is.

New generation lanternOur customers love the newLantern 2.0 because it’s a verymarketable and versatile productthat appeals to everyone. It hasopened up some great opportu-nities for installers to target abroader customer base becauseit’s equally well suited to tradi-tional or modern properties andto very high end or more modestprojects.

This new lantern has a verysleek, clean appearance andwe’ve made several modifica-tions to make it lighter, easier tofit and more thermally efficientthan before. Lantern 2.0 has anumber of refinements. For in-stance, the ringbeam now sitslower on the roof so it’s more dis-creet from the outside. And,we’ve also made the ridge 25%slimmer and nearly 50% shorterto achieve those all-importantlow sightlines on the inside, whilst being less obtrusive on theoutside.

There are less parts and com-ponents, so the lantern goes to-gether quickly and it’s very easyto lift into position. The new one-piece ringbeam does away withthe need for on-site assemblyand it’s simpler to drill to the kerbto ease fitting further. And, be-cause the lantern is a ‘dry fit’ sys-tem, which only requires siliconeto seal the lantern at the kerb, itis neater, quicker and easier tofit than ever before.

Leads2Trade are generating40% more conservatory leadscompared to the same pe-riod as last year and need tostrengthen their nationwidenetwork to cope, accordingto Andy Royle, co-founder ofthe company, who says therecould be even more on thehorizon.

The company matches conser-vatory installers with homeowners

looking to add a conservatory orreplacement conservatory roof totheir home.

“We are to be generating 40%more conservatory lead volumesbut we don’t have enough in-stallers to take advantage ofthem,” says Royle.

“The demand is clearly thereand the conservatory market isproviding a huge opportunity thatinstallers can’t afford to miss.”

Improve don’t moveFor Royle, the increase in conser-vatory leads is down to twothings – the improve don’t movetrend and increasingly more so-phisticated designs.

“Better designs and better mate-rials have seen the conservatorybecome popular as a room thatnow stays warm in the winter andcool in the summer months,” saysRoyle.

“But more and more homeown-ers are also deciding to stay putrather than move and are lookingto add value to their home in theprocess with a conservatory.”

It veryclearly shows how Lumi standsout from just about everythingelse. Lumi is so different that ithas to be seen for real and inour experience there is no bet-ter way of showing it at its verybest that with the Pod.”

Anyone visiting Hagan Win-dows of Cookstown, Co Tyrone, cannot help but see the newLumi Pod because Eugene De-vlin and son Charles have delib-erately made it the focus of theirentire display. “We’ve posi-tioned it so it’s the first thing peo-ple see when they come in,”says Charles, “We have had itabout five months and it starteddrawing people’s attention right

from the start. We’ve even seenpeople come in off the street tolook at it. We’re finding thesame reaction everywhere weinstall a Lumi Pod,” says ApeerMarketing Manager LindaTomb, “Lumi is something deal-ers naturally want to show offand we have given them all theyneed to make it the focal pointof any showroom.”

The Lumi system first burst ontothe market at the Grand Designsexhibition in 2015. Since then, the window has been joined bya door and lift/slide patio doorsystems, then more recently bythe retrofit-friendly 70mm dou-ble-glazed Lumi2.

Getting SmartMila’s stand at the FIT Showwas devoted entirely to thelaunch of the new MightonAvia secure smart lock tothe trade.

Mila announced that it hassigned an exclusive distributiondeal with Mighton to supply theApple HomeKit compatiblesmart door locking system tofabricators and installers acrossthe UK. Mila’s MD, RichardGyde, said: “2019 is very muchthe year of smart technologyand we’re really excited to be in-troducing our own fabricator, in-staller and homeowner friendlysolution.” Avia was on displayon a range of timber, aluminium, composite and PVC doors, em-phasising the fact that it workswith all standard multi-point lock-ing systems from 44mm to70mm. What stood out is thefact that Avia is fitted on the in-side of the door only, with aMila SupaSecure PAS24, SBDaccredited stainless steel handlefitted on the outside. In terms offitting, Avia comes with a stan-dard sized backplate so it canbe fitted and crucially, retrofit-

ted, quickly and simply. It’s wire-less and works with multi-pointlocking systems on doors from44mm to 70mm, so can be veryeasily integrated into existingproduction and installation setups. As it features a SupaSecurehandle and conventional cylin-der on the outside, it also over-comes all the concerns whichretail buyers sometimes voiceabout smart locks – deterring theopportunist thief and eliminatingany risk of tampering, while alsoproviding the reassurance of atraditional key and cylinder foremergency back-up. Avia isApple HomeKit compatiblewhich means it has been re-

viewed and approved by Appleto ensure that the military gradesoftware protocols it uses for thetransfer of data are fully secure. In turn, it means that it comeswith the Apple HomeKit logo, which is so trusted by con-sumers, on all of its literatureand packaging.

ObsessivePanoramic Doors confirmedan almost obsessive com-mitment to launching newproducts at the company’sfirst FIT.

Kevin Best known for its in-creasingly popular Panoramicslide and swing alternative tothe conventional bi-fold, thefirm confirmed its developmentof a portfolio of additionalproducts with the introductionof new windows in PVC-U andaluminium; a PVC-U version ofthe Panoramic door; and whatthe company has now dubbed‘the ultimate patio door upsellitem’ with its Ascena Flyscreen.

Although difficult to single outany one product, Panoramic’snew PVC-U Flush ‘Hidden Sash’window in anthracite attracteda great deal of attention. Equalsightlines and a sash thatemerges only when opened, complemented by polished, in-visible welds and recessed, popup hardware, combine to pro-mote a window that has excep-tional, minimalist aesthetics. i

Aluminium Quote TimesMade RealA new online aluminium quot-ing and ordering solution hasbeen created to make theprocess of ordering aluminiumwindows and doors quickerand easier than ever before –down to four minutes, RealAluminium, the company be-hind the system claimed at FIT.

John Adams, aluminium cate-gory director at Real Aluminium, said: “Aluminium has historicallybeen a difficult supply chain tomanage but it just doesn’t needto be this way. With Real Alu-minium as their partner, installerswill discover that aluminium re-ally is as easy as PVC-U. Andnow, for the first time ever, theycan use a simple yet comprehen-sive software package to takecharge of their quoting and or-dering, save valuable time, boostproductivity and access every-thing they need 24/7.

“Quoting that once took at least24 hours has been whittled downto less than five minutes and leadtimes that were many weekshave been reduced to just a mat-ter of days." Real Aluminiumjoined forces with top industrysoftware developer First DegreeSystems to design, develop andbuild the new online quoting andordering system, which allows in-stallers to quote and order Realproducts anytime and anywherewhen they are online.

Designer Doors Launchedlast year and shown againthis year at FIT, Smart Archi-tectural Aluminium's De-signer Door range features awide choice of styles anddesigns, from the contem-porary Modern collection,to the Traditional, Cottageand Vintage portfolios.

MD Eddie Robinson, says:

“We showcased some newdoors at Futurebuild 2019where we were able to presentthe range to architects and de-velopers; the FIT show provideda platform for us to also talk towindow installers about the fea-tures and benefits of the newdoors and the fantastic oppor-tunities they present. “The newDesigner Door range is ourflagship product, with high-se-curity, high-performance andgreat quality. The doors areavailable now through a net-work of more than 80 of ourfabricator partners across theUK and we’re looking forwardto working closely to establishDesigner Doors as a premiumproduct in the market.”

On display at the show werea number of style variants, allof which are complemented bya wide range of size, glazingand door furniture options, aswell as a broad spectrum ofcolours and finishes fromSmart’s extensive colourpalettes.

Very InterestingTrade fabricator Tradesmith, showed two very interestingwindows at FIT. The first wasan ‘A’ rated acoustic Dece-uninck window on BlueskyCertification’s stand.

Two identical samples formedpart of a soundproof booth ascertification body Bluesky usedthe show to highlight the im-pact of noise on our everydaylives – and how fitting the rightwindows can make a big differ-ence.

Similar to the familiar energyrating system with its rainbowlabels, Bluesky rates windowsaccording to their effectivenessin blocking out noise. Windowsare graded E up to A+, sohomeowners can buy the rightlevel of protection to excludethe noise they suffer. The Trade-smith windows used for the

booth were both acoustic ‘A’rated.

The second Tradesmith fabri-cated window was featured onhardware supplier VBH’s stand. The Invisifold casement windowwas fully operational, so visi-tors could see its benefits in ac-tion. Invisifold is a system thatconverts existing windows anddoors into individual panelsthat can slide and fold to leavea large unobstructed opening.Gary Gleeson, Marketing Man-ager of VBH says: “When weneeded a window to demon-strate our new concealedgreenteQ Invisifold casementhinge, the team at Tradesmithwere only too happy to help. They supplied us with a stun-ning 3-pane Invisifold casementwindow on Deceuninck profile, which saw a lot of action overthe three days of the show.”Tradesmith MD Mark Hutchin-son says: “People couldn’tleave either window alone. They’d never seen anything likethe Invisifold window andthey’d never come acrossacoustic windows that reallydid block out loud noise.”

Veka Recycling has launched a new website thatis in keeping with the continuing construction ofwhat will be Europe’s most advanced PVC-Uwindow and door recycling facility.

Using new photography and graphics the websitedescribes Veka Recycling’s role in the reprocessing of virgin offcuts and post-consumer and industrialend-of-life windows and doors and how the company is highly adept at working with fabricators andinstallers to turn waste products into new. Crucially, through the website Veka Recycling emphasises justhow simple the company makes it for old frames to be recycled, for the increasingly important benefitsto the environment of course, but actually as a sound business proposition too.

MD Simon Scholes says: “The founder of Veka, Heinrich Laumann, used his vision and determinationto create the first plant dedicated to the recycling of PVC-U and associated materials in Behringen, Ger-many in 1993. Our new plant being built at Wellingborough extends that vision and the website notonly brings to life Veka Recycling’s philosophy, but also the practicalities of how we work with fabrica-tors and installers to make the most of PVC-U as a sustainable resource.” veka-recycling.co.uki

Rapierstar’s specialist technical support has played a key role in help-ing West Port to achieve high performing fire rated door-sets, by elimi-nating the risk of failure during testing as a result of the incorrect choiceand application of fasteners.

Andy Tyas, Operations Director at West Port says: “From the outset wewanted to create fire doors that offer performance that far exceeds the ratingsthey are awarded, demonstrated by our 30 minute fire doors actually achiev-ing 42 minutes in testing. Our 60 minute fire door is another really importantdevelopment which, like our FD30 option, is built using only technically supe-rior components.”

Rapierstar has provided West Port with detailed guidance on which fasten-ers to use throughout the door-set’s construction in order to achieve the 30and 60 minute fire ratings. In addition to input at the design stage, thisincludes training to ensure fabricators use fasteners correctly, and regularauditing of the factory to maintain consistency in the quality andpromised protection level in finished door-sets. rapierstar.comi

Freefoam’s new video sees Commercial Director, Colin StJohn, explaining the big changes to the roofline market overthe last 20 years, and their implications for the future.

St John (pictured) explains: “Up to 2008, the market for buildingproducts followed a traditional, very structured model, with manu-facturers making and selling products to stockists, and stockiststhen distributing products to the installer marketplace and home-owners. After the crash in 2008, several iconic brands were lostand the marketplace began to shift. As people adapted to thechanging market, there was a movement to a vertically integratedsupply chain, where manufacturers have their own distributionchannels.”

But Freefoam took a different path, focusing instead on develop-ing customer relationships and adapting its product range andservice offering, rather than trying to change the market. The lastdecade has seen Freefoam continuing to adapt and revise its prod-uct range, packages and extending guarantees in response to cus-tomers’ feedback.

SponsorsYale will be sponsoring the newTech Talk stage, while UniqueWindow Systems is sponsoringthe VIP leaders dinner, whichtakes place in the evening, withODL Europe sponsoring thedrinks reception. Numerous othermajor brands have joined a line-up of event partners to supportthe conference, including Ed-

getech, which was the first com-pany to come on board, as wellas CAB, BFRC, FENSA, The Res-idence Collection, WindowWidgets, Window Ware,Shelforce, Improveasy, HodgsonSealants and the TWR Group.

PlatformThe industry really got behind theconference last year and I feel thecalibre of names we alreadyhave signed up to support the2019 event shows how valuableit is. The Summit broke newground and as the market ma-tures, a platform for businessleaders and CEO’s to come to-gether, learn and share informa-tion has become paramount.”This year will see a fresh newline-up of key-note speakers, in-cluding respected industry lead-ers, trailblazers and provenexperts, across not one but twostages.

Wider marketAlongside the main stage thisyear, will be the new technicalstage. This will focus on a rangeof topics relevant to the industryand the wider market such asbest practice, growth, profitabil-ity and consolidation.

SocialThere will also be a buffet lunchand plenty of networking oppor-tunities with industry leaders.Later in the evening, there will bea VIP leaders dinner which willtake place in the Edgbaston Ban-queting Suite. This will have aninformal business style, so guestsattending the conference duringthe day won’t need to bringevening wear. i

The long-range weather forecast for July was for it to be abit miserable and rainy (although warm) for the start of thesummer. And then for July, to see records broken in aheatwave.

The great British weather eh? But there has been a warning fromCancer UK that shows skin cancer is still on the rise in the UK.Women are more susceptible on their legs. Men on their chestsand torsos.

Generally, on holiday, we Brits use sun screen barrier – but notwhen we are working or socialising. Men are the worst – theytake their tops off to work and get burned.

Now, professional installers should not be letting their employeesexpose themselves to the sun at work without advisingprecautions. And that's men and women. Just issue a simplewarning and then check your employees are taking your advice.

Falls and being struck still killingThe HSE’s annual provisional fatal statistic are out – 147 peopledied at work in 2018/19. Falls and being struck are the biggestkillers. But the stats don’t tell you how many people lived afteraccidents – but in wheelchairs. I keep an eye out for suchincidents. Companies are find every single week becausesomeone went up a ladder healthy and camedown...healthy...until they hit the bottom.

Asbestos is still killing 2,523 people a year. And companies arefinEd regularly for letting their workers disturb asbestos withoutdoing an inspection. It is estimated that 58 per cent of schools inManchester alone still contain asbestos. So if you are doing a jobin a commercial setting where asbestos might be present - makesure a proper survey has been done will you?

Fall in startsIt’s worrying news that housebuilding is seeing a slowdown instarts as economic uncertainty hits home. Things seem to be on theup in the home improvement market, so let’s hope this slowdown isjust a blip as we head toward the Government target of 300,000new homes built every year.

Part of the unionGMB union member’s working at Anglian Windows have rejecteda proposal to cut hours and pay. The company agreed to scrapthe cuts at the 11th hour to avoid strike action.

I didn’t really think about union presence in the window industrybut I am aware of the work the GMB does in other sectors. I haveto say that by and large, the union does a good job. They seem tobe calling bad employers paying really low wages to book andthen working with good employers to solve issues without resortingto strikes and whatever...which is what unionisation should reallybe all about.
