AMENITIESPestalozzi International Village lies in a beautiful stretch of East Sussex countryside designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Surrounding the educational buildings is a significant block of agricultural land which is mainly permanent pasture. The agricultural land is sub divided into a number of good sized parcels and extends to approximately 83 acres. The property has 46 acres of mature attractive woodland interspersed throughout the agricultural land together with a more substantial parcel along the northern boundary abutting woodland managed by the Forestry Commission.

THE HISTORY In 1947 the British Pestalozzi Children’s village association was founded by Dr Henry Alexander and Mrs Mary Buchanan based on the principles of the Swiss educationalist and reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi. The group purchased the estate on the edge of Sedlescombe in 1957 and two years later the first children arrived from Europe. Since that date students have arrived from all over the world in order to study at local schools.

PLANNING POLICYThe site falls within the jurisdiction of Rother District Council and isidentified within the Sedlescombe Neighbourhood Plan (SNP) area. RotherDistrict Council emerging Development & Site Allocations (DaSA) Local Plan identifies the requirement for additional housing within Sedlescombe. The DaSLocal Plan is yet to be adopted and in the interim Rother District Council have a housing land supply deficit. The entire village of Sedlescombe together with the Pestalozzi International Village lie within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Sedlescombe Neighbourhood Plan for the period 2016-2028 recognises that in order to meet current housing targets there will need to be some impact upon the AONB. A section of the land in close proximity to Volkswagen House has been identified in Policy 3 of the Sedlescombe Neighbourhood Plan as being a brownfield site.. The policy supports the redevelopment of the land for 6-8 dwellings in order to facilitate the refurbishment /replacement of exiting staff and volunteer accommodation. A proportion of which will be made available as affordable homes. The remainder of the built site has potential to be viewed as brownfield allowing for the redevelopment of the site subject to obtaining the required planning permissions. There is an extant planning permission for additional building on the site including bunk accommodation. A planning briefing paper prepared by Batcheller Monkhouse, can be found in the Data Room.
