PERSONAL FAILURE15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. 17 But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.

--Romans 7

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8.1

Jesus

“I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”Matthew 9.13

Page 12: PD2014 Framing Failure With Forgiveness

“Without being forgiven, released from the consequences of what we have done,

our capacity to act would, as it were, be confined to one single deed

from which we could never recover; we would remain the victims of its consequences forever.”

--Hannah Arendt, The Human Condition

INTERPERSONAL FAILURE & FORGIVENESS

23 So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has

something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.

--Matthew 5

Page 20: PD2014 Framing Failure With Forgiveness

Can you praise God if you’re fighting with a friend? What does it feel like?

Do you think friendships have anything to do with God?

Page 21: PD2014 Framing Failure With Forgiveness

SOCIAL FAILURE & FORGIVENESS

When disaster happens people focus on their own survival

and often neglect others.

Page 22: PD2014 Framing Failure With Forgiveness

9“The thing that you are doing is not good. Should you not walk in the fear of our God, to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies? …

11 Restore to them, this very day, their fields, their vineyards, their olive orchards, and their houses, and the interest on money, grain, wine, and oil that you have been exacting from them.”

--Nehemiah 5

FORGIVENESS

God’s work and human work

Page 24: PD2014 Framing Failure With Forgiveness

FORGIVENESS

a practice of giving,in which you give yourself

to a new beginning

Page 25: PD2014 Framing Failure With Forgiveness

How can you give yourself?

1) Write a note to someone:•acknowledge failure in your relationship•express your commitment to begin again

2) Commit a tough relationship to prayer•picture the person’s face during The Lord’s Prayer
