The festival offers cinema as a means to understand what being queer means today, and how it impacts both the queer community and the society at large to foster better understanding of queer thoughts, desires and expressions.

FESTIVAL MISSION

Page 5: Partnership Proposal

Shyam Benegal is a prolific Indian director and screenwriter whose landmark films are considered milestones in Indian film history. He has won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi seven times. He has also won the Golden Palm at Cannes (for Nishant in 1976), the Golden Bear at Berlinale (for Ankur in 1974) and numerous other international awards. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. On 8 August 2007, he was awarded the highest award in Indian cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2005.

FESTIVAL PATRON

SHYAM BENEGALKASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival is honoured and privileged that renowned filmmaker and eminent advocate of good cinema Mr.Shyam Benegal lends us his supports us as our Festival Patron.

"It is marvellous to see how KASHISH has grown over the last three years but more important is its mainstream acceptance. Today KASHISH has become an important event in the mainstream cultural space in Mumbai. LGBT persons are still looked on as different and in many societies as criminals. Movies are a great way of communication and breaking these stereotypes."

Page 6: Partnership Proposal

The second year was ' Bigger Bolder & Queerer' and established KASHISH as India's biggest queer film festival. In the third year, the festival expanded horizontally with more events, corporate partners and proved true to its theme 'For Everyone'.

The past three editions, organized by Solaris Pictures and The Humsafar Trust in association with Bombay Dost has become a landmark event, not only for the LGBTI movement, but also as a much anticipated cultural event in Mumbai. Pics, Links and Press Clips in Appendix 2

3 YEARS OF KASHISHIn 2010, KASHISH created history by organizing India's first ever queer film festival in a mainstream theatre with clearance from the I&B Ministry, Govt. of India. The theme was 'See A Different World'

Towards Change

The 4th KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival will be held from May 22nd to 26th, 2013 at two venues at a multiplex theater in western suburbs and Alliance Française de Bombay in South Mumbai. The theme for KASHISH 2013 is ‘TOWARDS CHANGE’

The Indian LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) landscape is undergoing a sea change since 2009 after reading down of Sec 377 by the Delhi High Court – with more openness from the society towards same-sex loving people. More youngsters are coming out to their families, coming out to friends and colleagues; they are living lives without masks. Though the Supreme Court verdict is being awaited, there is a general feeling of hope that stigma and discrimination will diminish in the years to come. This is also mirrored in the global context with progressive move towards change in many countries, enabling LGBT persons to live with dignity.

KASHISH 2013 will highlight, reflect upon and celebrate these movements in India and worldwide with its festival theme – ‘Towards Change’.
