Raising awareness

of ABI in Australia

and globally.

We think you’re bang on for this!

on our successand take BANGONABEANIE

to the world!

we can buildwith your help

In 2011 Synapse, in association with Brain Injury

Associations across Australia, began work on

transforming an invisible disability into a very

visible one. Each year our success has grown!

Acquired Brain Injury or ABI, refers to the multiple

disabilities arising from any damage to the brain

that occurs after birth. Common causes of ABI

include accidents, violence, stroke, infection,

alcohol and other drug abuse, and degenerative

neurological disease. And it’s wide spread,

affecting over 1,600,000 Australians. Statistically

that’s over 1 in 12!

You can read more about ABI later, but right

now we’d like to tell you more about the details

of what you can expect in our third year of our

Acquired Brain Injury awareness campaign.

The BANGONABEANIE (BOAB) Campaign

encourages people to buy and proudly wear

our blue BOAB beanie in support of the national

Brain Injury Awareness Week.

to the world!

BANGONABEANIE.COM

When they bang on a beanie they actively

support anyone living with ABI, including

loved ones, friends, acquaintances, even

those they don’t know. Of course those

worried about ‘Beanie Hair’ can simply make

a donation. Anyone can make a donation at

BANGONABEANIE.COm! All profits from this

campaign will go toward improving the essential

and much needed services for people living

with ABI. Basic things like accommodation

and support during the most crucial stage of

recovery, the post injury period. Things we all

take for granted.

Yes BANGONABEANIE is fun, but it’s

the best way we know how to share the

information about ABI. So get on board

with us for this year’s exciting event and

make a big difference to someone’s life!

need people to get stuck in their heads

BANGONABEANIE.COM

To avoid the stigma and being thrown into the ‘too-hard basket’ it’s vital we keep the beanie concept fun! That way we will keep the topic of brain injury out in the open.

acquired brain injuryTHE FACTS

Did you know that around twice as many people are diagnosed each year with ABI compared to those with breast cancer? 1.6 million Australians are affected- that’s over 1 in 12! ABI is very common. Just have a think about these situations...• When ‘one punch doesn’t kill’• As a result of falls, motor vehicle accidents, and other trauma such as concussion or repeated knocks to the head from contact sports• As a result of degenerative diseases, brain tumours,

Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy and other brain illnesses• As a result of stroke or hypoxia (lack of oxygen)• Alcohol or drug abuse, most commonly through driving under the influence, sustaining falls, or as a result of domestic violence. With you on the team we want to tell the community how they can help and support all those adults and children living with a brain injury.

We knew that to be successful, we needed to establish a relevant

but fun and easy action. We came up with blue beanies. Blue

because it’s bright, and a beanie because it’s at eye level. Plus

beanies have been proven to appeal to our targeted age groups,

young people who are receptive to good causes. The message is

simple: buy a beanie and wear it in the lead-up and during Brain

Injury Awareness week. Get behind it for a family member or for

someone you know or anyone living with ABI.

Our initiative is based on the rationale that:

• Community awareness of Acquired Brain Injury is poor

• A large number of people are living with ABI – considerably

more than what is currently being reported through lack of

diagnosis or misdiagnosis

• ABI is invisible to far too many people – diagnosis and policy

must be based on accurate statistics (not on underestimated

statistics as it currently stands)

• There are not enough services to meet current need. We need

to change that!

Our Aims & Objectives:

1) Increase awareness and media coverage of Acquired

Brain Injury in Australia and across the world.

2) Raise funds to provide appropriate accommodation for

young people.

3) Develop sustainable partnerships with organisations

across the country.

The highlight of last year’s campaign had to be the

that attended raved about it! This year we are doing it all

over again, but bigger and better! To achieve these dizzy

heights we need a major Launch Party sponsor.

Interested? Your company could be the headline act at this year’s

launch! The Champagne will be flowing whilst our

We put our thinking beanies on and worked out a

deliciously fun way to raise funds and even more

awareness during our mega BANGONABEANIE

campaign. The BangOnABarbie events!

These events are about getting families, friends

and workmates together, grabbing some steaks,

rissoles or even just the humble bangers to bang

on a BBQ!

As well as having a gas time and enjoying all that

yummy tucker, these events help raise awareness

for our great cause.

This year we are offering sponsorship of our

planned major BangOnABarbie event!

So if you haven’t got too much on your plate,

like having a good time... the BangOnABarbie

sponsorship could be all yours!

We will help by promoting it heavily and pointing

to our website for details.

We will do all the hard work

and with your help we can make

it happen.

Sponsorship!

The messages, marketing and activity will roll

out in three distinct phases:

phase 1:THROW IT OUT THERE

Our marketing campaign and PR kicks off. We go

guerrilla with our posters to get the ball rolling. Our

innovative branding creates interest in visiting the

website for the full story. We start the social networking

chat and look to engage with others, sign up amazing

partners and consignees, as well as the recruitment of

an army of volunteers.

phase 2:

PUSH IT FURTHER

The push begins in earnest. We sell beanies and

organise fund raising events like BangOnABarbie. At

this stage, Facebook will be abuzz with discussions

about ABI... the formerly invisible disability!

phase 3:

CALL TO ACTION

Brian Injury Awareness Week is here, and we launch it

with a stellar event!! We get more people to share their

stories, take pics of themselves proudly wearing their

beanies, sharing everything on Facebook. We promote the

hell out of our events, get the media talking about it and

finish off with BangOnABarbie wrap party!
