MISSION HOSPITAL SPIRITUAL CARE VOLUNTEER TRAINING
Mission Hospital is offering a training program for Spiritual Care Volunteers for both campuses on March 17th. The training consists of 11 classes in which you will develop skills for visiting patients. Applicants must be persons of generosity and compassion, plus understand spirituality as a necessary element of patient care. Spiritual Care Volunteers wil be asked to devote a minimum of 50 hours annually to patient visits. For more information and an application, call Sandy Fant at (949) 364.1400, ext. 5399.

Fast & Abstinence (USCCB) Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding from age 14 onwards. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.

The Outreach Ministry is seeking a team to plan a party for our seniors this year. If you would like to lead this event and/or bring in a team of friends to help, please contact Christi-na Puga at 949/234-1360. ODCCW & St. Martin de Porres invite you to at-tend the St. Patrick’s Day Theme highlighting the March General Meeting and luncheon on Tuesday, March 17. The cost is only $15. What do you get for your money? A continental breakfast, lunch, and a great speaker. “Faith Formation” is presented by Nancy Cun-ningham, Pastoral Associate for Catechesis, focusing on four main points: 1) Sharing Our Stories, 2) People of Faith, 3) Our Learning Communities, and 4) Transform-ing Our Live. Mass at 8:00 AM, registration at 8:30 AM, General Meeting at 9:00 AM and adjournment at 1:30 PM. MISSION GIRLS WIN COUNTY TITLE!
The MBS 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team won the Parochial Athletic League Orange County Championship with a 34 – 21 win over the School of Our Lady of Santa Ana. An MBS team hasn’t brought home this title since 2008! The win was especially sweet for retired Athletic Director Pat Forster who returned to Mission to take over the team that was in need of a coach. Mr. Forster proudly stated, “This is the culmination of my 29 years of coaching at Mission School. It is tantamount to winning the Super Bowl and World Series combined. “ On the court the girls were ferocious on defense, a reason their coach gave for their incredible season. Off the court the team loved to have fun and was so grateful to Mr. Forster for returning to be their coach. Congratulations to the girls and their coach! Swallows Win!

40 Days For Life 2015 -
Mission Viejo
This year 40 Days for Life will be at three Planned Parenthood locations instead of just the Tustin Avenue location in Orange. This is so that there will be less travel time to get to the locations. Here in South County, we will be assembling for prayer at the Planned Parenthood facility at La Paz and Chrisanta Dr in Mission Viejo. We are asking for Mission Basilica parishioners to sign up on the web site for a time when they would like to pray at the Mission Viejo facility. Moreover we are asking for as many parishioners as possible to come at 10am Saturday March 7 to the Mission Viejo facility for prayer. Oregon to end her life, several state senators have introduced the End of Life Option Act (SB 128) that would allow California physicians to prescribe life ending barbiturates to assist patients in committing suicide. Join fellow community and faith leaders as we discuss a compassionate response to this current legislative push to legalize physician assisted suicide and as we seek to educate and form Catholics with regard to approaching the end of life with humility, courage and love. PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA
MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: Seguimos caminando en la Cuaresma: el CAMINO a la Pascua continúa. Hemos terminado la primera etapa y nos preparamos a iniciar la segunda etapa. Es necesario preguntarnos por el lugar exacto en que nos encontramos: - ¿Voy siguiendo los pasos de Jesús? - ¿Es mi camino de conversión un IDENTIFICARME con Él, con su ESTILO de VIDA? Puede aflorar en nosotros el desencanto, la sensación de fracaso, de no merecer la pena. El “no consigo avanzar”; el “todo sigue igual”; el “no merece la pena”; o el “es tan difícil...”, pueden ser expresiones que indiquen esta actitud de cuasi-fracaso o desencanto. ¡Atentos! Este mismo mensaje nos puede llegar de nuestro entorno: el tener, el disfrutar, el consumir, el acumular, como la solución a nuestras insatisfacciones personales. Aquí resuenan las palabras y los gestos de Jesús que hoy se vuelven a proclamar y anunciar en esta celebración. Abrirnos a Él y descubrir toda la fuerza que emana de su mensaje, es el objetivo. - ¿No será el momento de “gustar” de ese proyecto de Jesús, de descubrirlo en su verdadero significado? - ¡Quién sabe si Él puede llenarnos de paz, de ilusión, de ganas de vivir, de actitudes de acogida, reconciliación,…! - E, incluso… ¡nos llena de ánimos para seguir trabajando por un mundo más humano, solidario, más al estilo del querer de Dios! ¡DICHOSOS los que lo intentan: para ellos la PASCUA será una FIESTA!

¿SI USTED TIENE UN ENFERMO EN CASA? ALGUIEN DE LA IGLESIA PUEDE LLEVARLE LA COMUNIÓN (La Sagrada Eucaristía) Es importante que una persona enferma reciba el Sacramento de la Eucaristía.
Aquí te doy una pequeña guía de las personas que pueden pedir que les lleven la eucaristía: Personas que tuvieron una operación o están recuperándose de alguna enfermedad temporal. Personas que tienen una enfermedad terminal y no pueden llegar a la Iglesia con facilidad. Personas ancianas que no pueden o no tienen quien les traiga a la iglesia. Por eso, si tú sabes de alguien que quiera recibir el sacramento de la eucaristía es im-portante que hables a la Oficina del Ministerio Hispano y hables con Irma Castro (234-1360, ext. 362) para registrar a tu enfermito y asegurar que una persona le lleve la
comunión cada semana.

De acuerdo con las estipulaciones de la Ley Canónica (Cánones 1249-1253) e implementadas por la Conferen- cia Nacional de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos, los Católicos de la Diócesis de Orange deben observar las siguientes regulaciones en sus prácticas de penitencia: 1) En primer lugar es importante notar que, es por Ley Divina que los fieles están obligados a hacer penitencia, y para esto la Iglesia pide a todos aquellos mayores de 14 años de edad que observen algún tipo de mortificación todos los viernes a lo largo del año. Esta obligación en sí es muy seria. 2) La abstinencia de carne se observa el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los Viernes de Cuaresma por todos los católicos mayores de 14 años. Ningún católico podrá encontrarse ligeramente, exento de esta práctica penitencial. 3) Toda persona de 18 años de edad y aún no mayor de 60 años está obligada también a ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo.
a. En estos días de ayuno, solo se permite una comida completa durante el día. Otras dos comidas, suficientes para mantener la fuerza, se puede tomar al no ser juntas, equivalentes a una comida. Comer entre comidas durante estos días no está permitido; el consumir líquidos entre comidas si está permitido. b. Esta ley no les obliga a aquellas personas que por motivos de salud o trabajo puede afectarles seriamente.
OBSERVACIÓN CUARESMAL
4) Con el propósito de profundizar nuestro amor e identificación con Cristo, se les exhorta a todos los católicos a participar en la misa diaria y recibir la Santa Comunión con frecuencia; participar en las devociones de la Iglesia; dar generosamente a obras religiosas y de caridad; asistir a los enfermos, los ancianos y los pobres; practicar el ayuno voluntario, penitencia y abnegación, especialmente en lo relacionado con las bebidas alcohólicas y entretenimiento social y el orar más fervientemente, en particular por las intenciones del Santo Padre. 5) La Cuaresma es un tiempo admirable para predicar el mensaje de reconciliación en el Evangelio, por lo tanto conviene que los párrocos vean que se le provee a la comunidad con oportunidades frecuentes de celebrar el Sacramento de la Reconciliación. De ésta manera los aspectos sociales y eclesiales del pecado, y la reconciliación pueden ser enfatizados. Debe notarse, sin embargo, que la absolución general en tales celebraciones no puede darse. 6) Este año el Miércoles de Ceniza cae en el 18 de febrero, el Domingo de Pascua es el 5 de abril y la temporada pascual termina con la fiesta de Pentecostés, el 24 de mayo. Los católicos deben recibir la Santa Comunión al menos una vez al año, especialmente dentro de la temporada pascual, al menos que por alguna buena razón el precepto pueda ser realizado en algún otro momento. 7) El Viernes Santo ha llegado a ser un día consagrado a la oración y meditación en la pasión y muerte de Cristo. En los lugares donde se observe la devoción de las Tres Horas, esto sin embargo, no debe de estar en conflicto con lo más importante, la liturgia del Viernes Santo. Se recomienda la oración matutina. 8) Las personas responsables de la formación religiosa de los menores deberán de traer a los niños a la Iglesia durante la Cuaresma para la devoción del Viacrucis, siempre que sea posible. Tanto como las circuns tancias lo permitan, lo más recomendable es tener la devoción del Viacrucis separada y adaptada para los niños. 9) El Triduo Sagrado comienza con la Celebración de la Eucaristía de la Cena del Señor el Jueves Santo en la noche, y termina con la oración vespertina de la Pascua.
