VIII Mission Basilica San Juan CapistranoLETTER FROM MSGR. ART

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In my previous bulletin letters we have reflected on two of the significant documents emerging from the final session of the Second Vatican Council, the Declaration of the Church on Relations with Non-Christian Religions (Nostra Aetate) and specifically our relationship with our Jewish sisters and brothers and the Declaration on Religious Liberty (Dignitatis Humanae). The third and final significant document to be promulgated as the great Council came to a close on December 7, 1965 was The Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes).

The First Vatican Council that was held between 1869 and 1870, was abruptly “adjourned” as the Kingdom of Italy invaded the Papal States, thus unifying Italy for the first time as part of what was known as the Risorgimento. Pope Pius IX excommunicated the leadership involved in the usurpation of the Papal States and declared himself a ‘prisoner of the Vatican,’ never to step foot again on Italian territory. The pope forbade Italian Catholics to take part in the social and political life of the Italian government thus exacerbating this estrangement of Church from State.

The resolution of what was called the ‘Roman Question’ finally took place under the pontificate of Pope Pius XI in what become known as the Lateran Treaty (1929) that provided substantial monetary compensation to the Holy See for the taking of papal lands together with acknowledging the special and privileged place that the Catholic Church would hold within the Italian State.

While subsequent Popes reflected authoritatively on matters dealing with the social welfare of the human family especially through their encyclical letters, the bishops of the Second Vatican Council felt it imperative that a conciliar and hence ‘authoritative’ document be devoted to the Catholic Church's teachings about humanity's relationship to society, especially in reference to economics, poverty, social justice, culture, science, technology and ecumenism.

As a result of this desire, The Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, the longest of all of the 16 conciliar documents was debated among the council fathers and eventually promulgated. It was the only document whose topic had not been anticipated in the preliminary documentary preparations for the council. Rather, it emerged out of the felt need of the Bishops gathered in council.

Next week we will look at the general topics covered by this groundbreaking document and its meaning for the life of the Church in the last and present century. Always forward! Msgr. Art

estamos llamados a movernos “siempre adelante”.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Is 35:1-10; Sal 85 (84):9-14; Lc 5:17-26 Martes: Gén 3:9-15, 20; Sal 98 (97):1-4; Ef 1:3-6, 11-12; Lc 1:26-38 Miércoles: Is 40:25-31; Sal 103 (102):1-4, 8, 10; Mt 11:28-30 Jueves: Is 41:13-20; Sal 145:1, 9-13ab; Mt 11:11-15 Viernes: Is 48:17-19; Sal 1:1-4, 6; Mt 11:16-19 Sábado: Zac 2:14-17 o Ap 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab; Jdt 13:18bcde, 19; Lc 1:26-38 o Lc 1:39-47, o cualquier lectura del Común de la Santísima María Virgen Domingo: Sof 3:14-18a; Is 12:2-3, 4, 5-6; Fil 4:4-7; Lc 3:10-18

XII Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano
