LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
As we gather on this Solemnity of Christ the King, we bring to a close our Liturgical Year and prepare to begin a new Liturgical Year as the First Sunday of the Advent Season un-folds next weekend. Providentially, our new Liturgical Year coincides with the installa-tion of our new bishop, Kevin Vann, that will take place on the 10th of December.
The reception and installation of a new bishop for a local church is always an historic mo-ment. Since 1976 when the Diocese of Orange was established as a separate ecclesiasti-cal jurisdiction, separated from the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we have witnessed phenomenal growth and development under our three previous bishops: Bishop William Johnson, Bishop Norman F. McFarland and Bishop Tod D. Brown. Bishop Vann will inherit a culturally rich and di-verse local church that is equally rich in its commitment to building the Body of Christ here in Orange County especially as we are poised to develop our new Christ Cathedral site in Garden Grove.
As pastor I encourage as many of you to consider participating in the various welcoming ceremonies con-nected with Bishop Vann’s Installation. In today’s bulletin you will find the formal invitation to the faithful of the diocese to participate either in the Evening Prayer Service on the 9th of December at the Arboretum on the Christ Cathedral campus or the Installation Liturgy on Monday afternoon, December 10th. The Installa-tion Liturgy will be taking place in the Bren Center connected with UCI in Irvine. It is a spacious facility that can accommodate over 5000 people. If you can attend, please coordinate your presence through Ei-leen Smith, our Director of Adult Faith Formation ([email protected]). If there are enough individ-uals desiring to attend the Installation Liturgy, the parish will be securing a bus to facilitate transport to and from the Bren Center.
Beginning our new week in Christ, let us commend to the loving mercy of our God all those who have gone before us in faith. May they be at peace.

Our Ministry will be celebrating Christmas with needy families on Sunday Dec. 16 in the Parish Center (Gym). Families who are registered with the Pantry will receive donated gifts and a Turkey dinner. Next weekend, Dec. 1-2, we will be distributing gift bags after all the masses with suggestions for Christmas toy donations for the children who will attend our celebration. Donated gifts may be returned the following weekend Dec. 8-9 prior to any of the masses or to the Parish office anytime before Saturday Dec. 15. Also in addition to gifts, we are encouraging our parish community to consider donating turkeys for our party. Turkeys may be dropped off at the Pantry on Saturday Dec. 15 from 9:00 AM to 1:00PM or on Sunday Dec.16 from 8:00AM to 11:00AM. Watch for more information in future bulletins and please prayerfully consider making a gift donation.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
As we near the end of the year, tax preparation season is rapidly ap-proaching. Currently tax preparation volunteers are now being recruited to help parishioners and San Juan Capistrano residents with tax filing. Adopt an Instrument!
On December 22, 2012 at 2:00 in the afternoon, the Basilica Mixed Ensemble, with the period instrument orchestra, Les Sauvages Américains, will perform the Christmas portions of the Handel’s famous oratorio Messiah. Our goal is to present this program as a free holiday concert to the Basilica parish and the San Juan Capistrano community. To accomplish this task we would like to have you consider adopting an instrument or soloist for the concert.
A tax deductible donation of $250 can be contributed individually or a group of supporters can adopt an individual instrument.
As a contributor you will receive the following: Acknowledgement in our concert program Priority seating at the Messiah Concert Private cocktail reception following the concert at the Mission Rectory with Mon-

MENASJE DE LA SEMANA: ¡FELIZ FIN DE AÑO¡ y ¡Viva Cristo Rey! Para terminar y como colofón del Año Litúrgico, la Co-munidad Cristiana celebra la solemnidad de JESUCRISTO, REY DEL UNIVERSO. ¡Cristo ayer, hoy y siempre! Es, sin duda, un atrevimiento en este nuestro mundo donde los “reyes absolu-tos” no tienen buena prensa. ¿Qué celebra en esta fiesta la Comunidad Cristiana? ¿Tiene algo que ver con lo de los reyes de este mundo (= po-der y riquezas)? Y afirmamos que nada en absoluto. Es necesa-rio “meter otra clave” para descubrir lo que significa lo del reinado de Cristo. Al proclamarlo así, estamos haciendo una declaración formal: Él debe impregnar toda la vida del cristiano, de manera que su forma de ver, amar y actuar, van dándole a su seguidor una identidad concreta y específica, donde la vida de cada día, los deseos de justicia, de verdad, de solidaridad van haciéndose vida y produciendo vida. Este reinado, pues, poco tiene que ver con el grito de “viva Cristo Rey”, como a veces se ha con-fundido. Nos tocará a sus seguidores poner las cosas en su sitio. Nos tocará a nosotros mostrar al mundo que la cruz y el servicio son las claves de lectura de este reinado de Cristo.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, Al reunirnos en esta Solemnidad de Cristo Rey, llegamos al cierre de nuestro Año Li-túrgico y a la vez nos preparamos para comenzar un Nuevo año Litúrgico con el Pri-mer Domingo de Adviento el cual llega el próximo fin de semana. Providencialmente, nuestro nuevo Año Litúrgico coincide con la instalación de nuestro Nuevo Obispo, Kevin Vann, la cual se llevara a cabo el 10 de diciembre. La recepción e instalación de un Nuevo Obispo para la Iglesia Local siempre ha sido un momento histórico. Desde 1976 cuando la Diócesis de Orange fue establecida como una jurisdicción eclesiástica, separada de la Metropolitana Arquidiócesis de Los Ánge-les, nosotros hemos sido testigos de un gran crecimiento y desarrollo bajo nuestros tres obispos anteriores: Obispo William Johnson, Obispo Norman F. McFarland y Obispo Tod D. Brown. El Obispo Vann estará recibiendo una Iglesia local culturalmente rica y diversa, especialmente al prepararnos ecuánimemente con nuestra nueva Catedral de Cristo en la ciudad de Garden Grove. Como párroco les motivo a participar en los varios eventos de bienvenida que conectaran con la Instalación del Obispo Vann. En el boletín de hoy encontrarán la invitación oficial para todos los fieles de la diócesis a participar en el Servicio de Oración el día 9 de diciembre en el Arboretum de la Catedral de Cristo o a la Liturgia de Instalación, lunes a mediodía, 10 de diciembre. La liturgia de instalación se llevará a cabo en el Centro Bren de la Universidad de Irvine (UCI). El Centro Bren tiene una capacidad para más de 5000 personas. Si tenemos un número de personas interesadas en asistir a la Liturgia de Insta-lación, la parroquia proveerá un autobús para facilitar la transportación al Centro Bren. IMPORTANTE ENCUESTA – Misión Basílica
Durante el pasado año el Consejo Pastoral ha trabajado diligentemente en desarrollar una encuesta parro-quial que estará disponible para todos los feligreses este diciembre. Las parroquias que toman en serio el servir y mantener vibrante la vida parroquial, constantemente buscan el mejorar la presencia del ministerio por medio de la gente que es llamada al servicio. El propósito de esta encuesta es la de “escuchar atenta-mente” a todos y cada uno de los miembros de la parroquia para poder servirle mejor en el futuro. ¡Este pendiente!
Fiesta de Cristo Rey
Es una de las fiestas más importantes del calendario litúrgico, porque celebramos que Cristo es el Rey del universo. Su Reino es el Reino de la verdad y la vida, de la santidad y la gracia, de la justicia, del amor y la paz. La fiesta de Cristo Rey fue instaurada por el Papa Pío XI el 11 de Marzo de 1925. El Papa quiso motivar a los católicos a reconocer en público que el mandatario de la Iglesia es Cristo Rey. Posteriormente se movió la fecha de la celebración dándole un nuevo sentido. Al cerrar el año litúrgico con esta fiesta se quiso resaltar la importancia de Cristo como centro de toda la historia un iversal. Es el alfa y el omega, el principio y el fin. Cristo reina en las personas con su mensaje de amor, justicia y servicio. El Reino de Cristo es eterno y universal, es decir, para siempre y para todos los hombres. Con la fiesta de Cristo Rey se concluye el año litúrgico. Esta fiesta tiene un sentido escatológico pues celebramos a Cristo como Rey de todo el universo. Sabemos que el Reino de Cristo ya ha comenzado, pues se hizo presente en la tierra a partir de su venida al mundo hace casi dos mil años, pero Cristo no reinará definitivamente sobre todos los hombres hasta que vuelva al mundo con toda su gloria al final de los tiempos, en la Parusía. En la fiesta de Cristo Rey celebramos que Cristo puede empezar a reinar en nuestros corazones en el momento en que nosotros se lo permi-tamos, y así el Reino de Dios puede hacerse presente en nuestra vida. De esta forma vamos instaurando desde ahora el Reino de Cristo en nosotros mismos y en nuestros hogares, empresas y ambiente.

Una vez más celebraremos las posadas en los barrios como se hace en nuestros países. Invitamos a todas las per-sonas que quieran ser patrocinadores de una posada ofreciendo su casa. ¿Qué debo hacer al prestar mi casa para una posada? No tenga miedo prestar su casa para una posada. La responsabilidad no es solo de usted, sino que hay un grupo que le ayudará en todo. Su responsabilidad sería la siguiente:
Estar presente a la hora asignada, cuando lleguen los peregrinos. Abrir las puertas y dar la bienvenida. Comunicarse con la persona que está asignada a la fecha de su posada. Si es posible, arreglar su casa con arreglos navideños. Invitar a sus vecinos a participar. Asegurar que hay un lugar donde romper la piñata. Colocar señales para saber donde está el lugar de la posada y marcar donde más se va a pedir posada. Hablar con la persona de la Iglesia para saber con que puede usted y su familia cooperar (canela, aguinaldos,
dulces, etc.). También hablar sobre la seguridad y los límites en el uso de su casa. La persona encargada en la Iglesia será responsable de:
• Guiar el rosario y pedir la posada. • Traer lo desechable (platos, vasos, cucharas, etc.), si es necesario. • Traer la(s) piñata(s) y aguinaldos. Los que se necesiten. • Traer el palo y el paño para cubrir los ojos. • Notificar al Depto. de Policía sobre la posada para asegurar que no hay problema. • Cuidar el orden durante la posada. • Recoger todo lo que llevó y ayudar a los anfitriones en la limpieza. Dejar la caja con todas las cosas para la posada del día siguiente. De antemano, les damos las gracias por abrir sus puertas y su corazón lleno de bondad al dar un espacio a Jesús por medio de está celebración. No tenga miedo, Jesús siempre tiene algo para los que le abren las puertas.
