International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS)

On the 25th May, 15 Paringa Park students participated in the ICAS Computer Skills Competition. Over 1.5 million students from across Australia and 12 other countries participate annually in the 6 available subject disciplines.

We are very proud of our 15 participants who were very eager and conscientious in their approach.

All participants have received a certificate from their classroom teacher as well as comprehensive feedback about their individual performances.

Following is a list of the participants and their results. Congratulations to all, Nancy Saccoia Deputy Principal

School Veggie Patch Our school has now registered for the ‘McCAIN School Veggie Patch’ Promotion. The school will receive points for every McCAIN frozen vegetable barcode and

McCAIN Purely Potato packs. All Barcodes can be place in the box located in the Front Office. The more points the more equipment we can receive to get the veggie patch going full steam. For more information see Simon or go to www.mccainveggiepatches.com.

Festival Choir Concert Our concert date for this year is Saturday August 21. We will be in row 3 at the Festival Theatre. The concert itself begins at 7:30pm but students need to be there at 6:40pm. There is also a rehearsal at the theatre on Saturday morning from 9:35am until 12:15pm and attendance is required at this. Tickets for the Saturday night concert are available through BASS on 131 246, over the counter at any BASS outlet or www.bass.net.au at a cost of $27.00 each. Jane Bassham Assistant Principal

Library News We are progressing well with the reorganisation of the new library thanks to lots of help from Lilian Withers, Helen Bergoc, Erica Staude (our CPSW) and Sarah Leak. The space is finally beginning to look like a real library! Although there is still a lot to do we think we will be close to being ready for the start of the Book Fair in week 5.

Book Fair and Book Week Book Week is coming up in week 6. Celebrations will be low key this year. Look out for assembly that week and also the Bookworm Donuts which you can order through the canteen.

Premier’s Reading Challenge We have had an unprecedented number of reading challenge forms returned over the last fortnight which is wonderful. I know getting books this year has been difficult but teachers are now able to borrow PRC books form the library so check classrooms if you still have a few spaces to fill on your sheet.

French News Well done to all the students who have been busily learning their poems off by heart during the last few weeks, in order to audition for this year’s SA French Teachers’ Association Poetry competition. Congratulations to the following students who were chosen to represent Paringa Park Primary School:-

R/1 Category Alana M, Charlie C, Tori M

2/3 Category Sophie H, Tori P, Olivia S

4/5 Category William P, Danielle M, Duncan V

6/7 Category Celine C, Adele B

These students were videoed reciting their poems off by heart one day last week before school, and that CD has now been sent off to the competition organisers for judging. Merci beacoup (thank you very much) to Marcus and Max for their help in videoing the entrants. Bonne chance à tous! (Good luck to all!)

This term with the older classes we will be looking at the Tour de France and the language associated with cycling, and descriptions of people, leading to the students making their own “Visages Comiques” (Funny Faces). In the younger classes, we will be looking at popular French children’s songs, and following the escapades of Serge and Pascal (two characters in a wonderful BBC series). Across the year levels, we will continue to learn a lot about France from the Show and Tell that the students bring in, and the learning of the French language will be reinforced through games and activities. Amitiés, Lea.

Paringa Park Cultural Awareness Week

Week 8 this term, the whole school will be involved in learning about different world culture. Several things have been planned for the week.

On Tuesday 7th September we will be attending a performance of the Salaka Drumming group. These people are from Ghana, East Africa and they will be playing the djembes. This group is loud and exciting and we are looking forward to their performance. All classes will also take part in

a workshop with the performers where each child will be to play a djembe and learn some skills on

these great instruments. Workshops will be either on the 7th or 20th September. Cost for the performance and workshops will be $10. A note will be coming home soon.

The canteen is also preparing to have food from around the world each day during that week. Each day will focus on a different country. More information later.

On the Thursday, 9th September all children have the opportunity to dress up in costumes representing a country. We will also be spending time between recess and lunch travelling around the world with passports, visiting and taking part in activities.

We are really looking forward to a great week of learning and fun. Sue Mauger

Dress Code Update Reminder to students to wear bottle green tops with navy blue bottoms. No brand named clothing. We ask that students who are unable to comply with the dress code have a note in their diary or communication book with the reason. Dress code items may be purchased through pre-order and the Dress code window will be open and staffed on Friday morning from 8:30am. Washing Instructions for the Special Order Striped Polo Shirts and Rugby Tops are as follows: GENTLE MACHINE OR HAND WASH SEPARATELY IN COLD WATER USING MILD DETERGENT. DO NOT ADD BOOSTERS, SOAK, BLEACH OR TUMBLE DRY. WASH & DRY INSIDE OUT IN SHADE This will help to prolong the colour of these shirts.

CPSW Corner Term 3 already! Where does the time go? Let me take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support at Paringa Park Primary School. It is so nice to receive a smile, a wave, a hello, a word of encouragement or even just a nod as we pass one another through the week. I just want to touch on the subject of VALUES. The dictionary definition of value: something of worth, merit, importance, to regard highly. If I were to ask you to name three things that you really valued, what sort of things would you include? Perhaps relationships, money, integrity, career, sleep. Our personal values flow from our convictions and priorities. Values are the springboard for our words and actions. So the next thing to consider is what sort of values are we passing onto our children? For example, I value the times when all my children and my husband are at home. Those special times when we are all in the same place at the same time. I hope that I am passing on to the children that family time is important and something to be valued. Regardless of where we have come from, we as parents and caregivers have the opportunity to teach our children values that will go to form the foundation of their lives. It’s a bit like sowing and reaping, so let’s aim for a wonderful harvest. Blessings Erica ☺

PARINGA PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL

POSITIVE SCHOOL RELATIONSHIPS Children deserve to be successful We can assist this by: • Working together in a positive and caring way • Acknowledge that everyone is doing their best • Understanding that if we’re not part of the solution we

can be part of the problem • Everyone contributing to a safe, secure,

harassment free environment for all members of the school community.

Raising concerns:

Schools are very complex organisations where a range of people are involved.

There will be concerns, which may be about curriculum, behaviour, policy, relationships, sport etc.

It is important that concerns are addressed as early as possible to avoid escalation.

The usual procedure to be followed is:

1. In the first instance arrange to talk to the person who knows most about the situation. - The classroom teacher - The yard duty teacher - The principal

- The Deputy principal - The Assistant Principal - The Governing Council or the relevant sub committee

2. Your concern deserves time in order to be resolved. Please inform the person about your concern with a note or telephone call. This enables them to be prepared and have all of the necessary information. A mutually convenient time can then be set up. If, together, you are not able to resolve the problem let the person know that you intend to speak to someone else. Arrange a time to speak to either the Principal or the Assistant Principal, giving information which will enable the meeting to be as productive as possible.

3. If at the conclusion of this meeting or meetings the problem is still not able to be resolved, please contact the Assistant Regional Director, Mr David Chadwick (ph 8207 3764). He will need to feel confident that all attempts to resolve the issue as per the above process have been explored.

There will be times when you feel, for a variety of reasons, that you are unable to speak to the person described as the first point of call. If this is the case please inform the Principal or Assistant Principal as described above.

I thought members of the community may appreciate this poem. This is a strong reminder of an aspect of education that we value highly at Paringa Park School - partnerships. Food for thought I dreamed I stood in a studio And watch two sculptors there, The clay they used was a young child’s mind And they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher; the tools being used Were books and music and art, One a parent with a guiding hand And a gentle, loving heart. Day after day the teacher toiled With touch that was deft and sure, While the parent laboured just as hard And polished and smoothed it o’er. When at last their task was done’ They were proud of what they had wrought, For the things they had moulded into the child Could neither be sold nor bought. And both agreed they would have failed If they had worked alone; For behind the parent stood the school And behind the teacher, the home.
