Assistant Principal Update Re-imagining childhood project 2018/2019 EChO (Early Childhood Organisation Inc) is a group of South Australian educators and carers whose focus is on children from birth to eight years of age.

As a response to being a partner in Carla Rinaldi’s Residency in SA, EChO initiated a two-year professional learning project to explore how the principles of the Reggio Emilia educational project can be interpreted for, and enrich our SA learning context.

Through our two year participation in the project, our Reception team explored current learning pedagogies and how we could best support our children to grow.

Our key inquiry question was “How do we create a culture of active engagement in all children?”

We examined the use of language and the environment to strengthen children's voice.

On Saturday 2 November, our Reception educators will be sharing and presenting our learning experiences with other educators across South Australia at the EXPO. Participants will have the opportunity to read and view examples of learning and artifacts, as well as the chance to talk with our educators about their thinking.

For more information about the work done by EChO please follow the link http://echo.asn.au/

Assembly Acknowledgements

Congratulations to the following children and classes who were acknowledged at the last assembly

for upholding our school values:

Lewis O & Sebastian A For using fantastic supportive words about each other’s learning

Bravery Care Challenge Trust

If your child will be absent from school for a period of 5 or more days (eg family travel), you will need to complete an Application for Exemption form which needs to be approved by the principal. These forms are available from the front office and should ideally be completed at least a week before the intended absence.

Visitors During School Hours As we have a duty of care to our students and staff we would like to remind all parents/caregivers who need to pick up or drop off their children during school hours or want to drop off lunches, drink bottles, school work etc you will be required to do so through the front office only. Staff will arrange for children to meet you at the front office or deliver items to the children. This is standard practice for Department for Education schools to ensure children have uninterrupted lesson time and a safe learning environment. Thank you for your cooperation.

School Banking The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) recently announced a review into school banking programs. ASIC would now like to hear from schools and families to help inform its review. You can provide feedback by answering the short survey which can be found at this link: www.consultation.asic.gov.au/financial-capability/revies-school-banking-programs/

The consultation period closes on 31 October 2019.

We are very pleased to report that we raised a total of $501 which has been donated to Novita. Thank you to everyone who joined in and donated.

Year 7 Canberra Camp Acknowledgement The year 7 children from our school have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Recount by Naomi & Charli On Monday the 23rd of September (week 10 last term) the year sevens set off on the first seniors camp to Canberra. We all arrived at the airport at 5:30am for a 7:00am flight, feeling tired, a little nervous, but most of all excited. After a quick photo, we said goodbye to our families and started our adventure.

The plane ride was exhilarating and extremely enjoyable. We played card games, looked out the window, and got free banana bread! We arrived at Sydney at 10:00 in the morning (Sydney time). We went up on the steps of the Sydney Opera House and looked at the magnificent Harbour Bridge. Then we started our four hour coach ride to Canberra with our terrific driver Eric.

We arrived at the Australian Institute of Sport (which was our accommodation) and went into our dorms. The dorms were apartment like areas shared between two/three students and they had a small common room and a balcony which overlooked an outside garden.

Here were some of the highlights and things that we did in Canberra:

The War Memorial was really moving to all of us. We participated in a service for a soldier who died fighting in World War Two. Chelsea F and Liam C placed a wreath on behalf of our school community. We had a short tour around the memorial as well, which was extremely interesting and made you think about all of the people that died fighting for Australia and other countries. Lest We Forget.

The Australian Institue of Sport (AIS) tour was exciting as we explored the layout of the area we were staying at. We got to explore all the places where famous athletes trained and got ready for big competitions. At the end of the tour we were got to spend some time trying out different sports like virtual downhill skiing, wheelchair racing, penalty shoot outs and much more.

Questacon was a fun, bright place where students could choose what they wanted to learn about and explore the various activities that they offered. We learnt heaps of new science information, all in fun and interactive methods. It opened our eyes to the world of science, and how fun and interesting it can be.

The CSIRO was interesting with vast displays of new and exciting technology and information to help make our planet better, and reduce greenhouse gases and plastic usage. We got to complete a scavenger hunt in small groups to look around the place ourselves.

The National Museum was an abstract building which we got to learn about the wonders of Australian history, we got to learn how our ancestors survived before, and how the English came and took over Australia.

Parliament House was a beautiful experience where we got to learn about how politics works and how our country is run. We got to be able to sit in the House of Representatives and the Senate, as our amazing tour guide gave us a fun way to learn everything. One of the best highlights was to go on the roof and see the amazing view that Canberra has got to offer. Did you know that any building with the Australian Coat of Arms on it belongs to all of the citizens of Australia? We had a lot of fun going into Parliament and saying “I own this building”!

The High Court was extremely interesting. The building was beautiful and the tour was fascinating. We learnt about the different types of cases that the High Court takes, the different stages of courts and democracy, and the constitution.

Plus there was really good food!

On behalf of the year sevens, we thank the teachers and the parents that helped this wonderful opportunity to be possible, for being able to learn, grow and experience new things that we wouldn’t be able to do in our everyday lives and to create long lasting friendships.
