Literacy
As part of our themed learning this term, the children will be exploring a range of fiction and non-fiction texts in their Literacy lessons. This week, for example, we are working on presenting a ‘live’ broadcast based around the outbreak of World War 2, which will later be used as a basis for writing a newspaper report.
Throughout the term they will also look at diaries, reports, information texts, narratives and letters. In addition, the children will explore a variety of war poems and write their own.
Literacy We will read extracts from a range of texts this term, including: Goodnight Mr. Tom and Friend or Foe.The children will also hone their skills of persuasion, including formal debates and writing balanced arguments.
Literacy expectations Spelling lists will go home weekly and children will practice with their spelling buddies in school.
Children are expected to join their handwriting in accordance with the Kingston cursive scheme.
Guided reading and visits to the library will take place weekly. Children are expected to read at home for an average of 25 minutes a day. Reading should be recorded daily in the home/ school diaries.
MathsThis term we will be extending the children’s understanding and knowledge of problem solving and mental mathematical strategies as well as securing their knowledge of the four calculations and written methods. This will be achieved through a variety of approaches including investigation activities, collaborative projects, interactive games and ICT.
Thematic Maths
Wherever possible the children will also be encouraged to use and apply their mathematical skills and knowledge in relevant ‘real life’ situations and experiences.
Maths Expectations
The children will be taught in streamed groups to ensure they are being challenged appropriately at their level. The movement between groups is fluid and will happen whenever appropriate. Home-learning Maths tasks will be issued weekly. Sometimes these will be set on www.mymaths.co.uk and the children will be reminded of their personal log in details and passwords.
The children will also complete a mental mathematics test once a week and either Speedy Sums, Maths Passport or Beat That tests depending on the group they are in.
Themed Learning Art, DT, ICT, Humanities
This term, our humanities focus is on World War Two. We will look at aspects such as why, where and when it began, how it affected the lives of children at the time and make links to how modern conflict affects children today.
Themed Learning Art, DT, ICT, Humanities
In ICT, the children will sign a pledge about being a positive digital citizen. They will look at issues such as safety online, cyber bullying, responsible communication and respect.
Art lessons will focus on communication through a range of Art styles including collage, stencilling, observational drawings and street art. The artist of the term will be Banksy.
