Learning at STOCLearning at STOC

• As a school, we try to teach our topics in a cross-curricular approach. We refer to our topics as ‘Connectors’, as many subjects are taught through the main topic of the term. Underpinning all subjects is the teaching and learning of vital skills. The children are encouraged to identify these skills and to be aware of how they are using them.

National CurriculumNational Curriculum

• Some subjects have changed more than others e.g.

• Maths: • Children are expected to achieve

more earlier e.g. know times tables up to 12x12, multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers

Page 16: Welcome to Year 5’s Curriculum Evening September, 2015 An evening to inform parents

The Mathematics curriculum is based around the following aims:

•Fluency: To become fluent in mathematics. (Frequent practise leads to the ability to recall and to apply known facts to solve increasingly complex problems.)

•Reasoning: To be able to reason mathematically. (To investigate a mathematical idea or operation so they can make general statement or prove an idea using mathematical language.)

•Problem solving: To be able to solve problems. (To apply their mathematics to every day and more complex problems and with increasing sophistication.)

The new curriculum emphasises the importance of language. The children are expected to develop their mathematical vocabulary to explain their work and justify an argument.

MathematicsMathematics

Our work is mainly covered by the Abacus Maths scheme, but we supplement this as necessary with other activities.

The children cover all aspects of Maths through a variety of practical activities and theoretical understanding.

In Year 5 we are moving children towards using formal written methods while still developing mental strategies.

Page 18: Welcome to Year 5’s Curriculum Evening September, 2015 An evening to inform parents

Mental MathsMental Maths• This term we will be focusing on

Multiplication Tables. We are working on revision of quick and accurate recall of all tables up to 12 x 12 and their related division facts: 6 x 8 = 48, 48 ÷ 6 = 8

• Later in the year we give standard Mental Maths tests on a regular basis.

Page 19: Welcome to Year 5’s Curriculum Evening September, 2015 An evening to inform parents

English:English:

SpellingsSpellings Weekly spellings are given to the children. The

lists will be based on the National Curriculum requirements. Each list will have a spelling rule or pattern. The three part grid will continue to be used on a fortnightly basis to include topic words and the children’s own words.

The focus is on the spelling rules and learning the words thoroughly for both spelling and meaning.

Spelling tests are given on Mondays. New lists sent home on Tuesdays.

ComputingComputing@ Computing is taught weekly, as well as supporting

other curriculum areas.

@ A greater emphasis will now be placed on programming. We will be using two software programs: CoCo and Kodu.

@ We teach children how to store information on a spreadsheet, carry out more advanced searches on databases.

@We use a selection of resources e.g. cameras and microphones to make their own radio broadcasts and documentaries using Audacity software.

@The School’s Learning Platform continues to develop and the children will be encouraged to use this regularly.
