Parelli e-News August 17, 2007 PARELLI WORLDWIDE AUGUST 17, 2007 Question: I need strategies for a horse that will not maintain gait at the trot or canter for more than a few strides. When asked with phases my horse bucks at Phase 4. Everything's good on the ground, I can deal with the bucking more safely there. I just need some advice when on the back. Answer: A horse that keeps changing gait to go slower is usually more ‘introverted’ as described in the Parelli Horsenality Profiles. And if they are more Left Brain, they tend to buck going into the canter! What you need to do is give this Left Brain Introvert a reason to want to move and to keep moving. Straight lines and trail rides work much better than circles which make the horse feel even more unmotivated, and for a horse who is really sour, use treats at strategic times like between two points... ride from point A to point B and give your horse a little rest, a treat or a nibble of some sweet grass for a minute. Then return to point A and do the same thing. Do this at the walk at first. After a couple of trips your horse will get the idea and be more eager to get there quicker! Another strategy that works well is to do a lot of transitions so you almost canter and then come back to the trot. After several repetitions of this your horse will usually glide into the canter instead of bucking. Then only canter a few strides before coming back to the walk or trot. This will help you avert trouble that comes from trying to keep your horse in the canter. After a few weeks you will find that your horse is generally more agreeable and you can do more and more strides. Just know that the worst thing you can do with this Horsenality is push and push and push him. He will make you work harder while he gets more disgruntled and stubborn. Think about what would make it interesting for him too. Refer to Success Series DVDs, “ Horsenality” and “ Calm Ride”. Also check out “ Natural Rider”, a DVD on Fluidity, to make sure you are doing the right things in your body and position to help your horse move more freely. Finally, check out our saddling / shimming information on parellicollection.com to make sure that your horse is not being restricted by your equipment. Question: I need strategies for a horse that will not maintain gait at the trot or canter for more than a few strides.

Refer to Success Series DVDs, “Horsenality” and “Calm Ride”.

“Natural Ride Parts 1, 2 and 3” with Linda Parelli and ‘Beau’

Linda and Beau meet again on Day 2 of the Michigan 2007 USA tour event (see Day 1 in July Club issue DVD). Linda asked Beau’s owner, Kelly, if she could ride this Left Brain, scheming, dominant horse for her riding session. “Everything’s fine until you ask this kind of horse to do something. You have to figure out how to get things done without it turning into a fight and without picking on him and him not picking on you...” Plus some behind the scenes surprises with Pat and family. Plus some very special behind the scenes surprises with Pat!

Parelli Games

“The Parelli Games Day, July 7, with 2-Star Instructor Sandy Lang, was one of the high points of my summer.

All ages of horses and students played this year and it was great to see the eagerness of younger participants, carrying Natural Horsemanship forward to future generations. Everyone who took part benefited from Sandy’s knowledge and clear, straightforward way of sharing her Savvy.

Everyone enjoyed the day as we watched and learned from each other as well as our horses, and enhanced our understanding of our strengths and weaknesses (THAT came from our horses, never other people!)

Picture: Parelli Games Day participant.

Most of all, Savvy came first. One student playing with her horse did not fully complete a task but when her horse tried, she said, ''I’ll take that," and ended on a good note.

Thank you, Sandy, for supporting us on our Horse•Man•Ship journey!”

Learn the Secrets to the Equine Mind and how to Reach Higher Levels of Bonding and Communication with Pat and Linda at Equitana Asia Pacific - Melbourne 15-18th November 2007!

The Parelli Horsenality Profile is the result of 25 years of studying what makes horses tick. It takes what the Great Masters and Whisperers inherently know when they look at a horse and put it into the hands of every horse lover, at recreational, professional and competitive levels.

Knowing what is important to each individual horse is the key to resolving behavioral and training issues and taking the horse-human relationship to new heights. So many issues are a result of misreading and therefore misunderstanding horses needs which often results in the exact wrong approach being applied.

“A huge thank you to Pat and Linda, especially for bringing their own horses to the UK.

To A. Healy who wonders if it’s realistic to start on the program at 51 (in last week’s e-News)—I'm 69 and I had nothing to do with horses until I was 60. I bought my first horse at 64. I’m a Level 1 graduate and am well into Level 2.

Thank you again Pat and Linda for all you do and for giving me so much pleasure and my horse a better life.”
