Answer: Something we need to express to you in earnest is the difference between Parelli training and more traditional techniques like the Paso Fino style of training. Parelli trains initially through disengagement and the other through engagement. Here’s the situation: Disengagement relaxes and “loosens the spring” while engagement “tightens the spring.” This means mentally, emotionally and physically. Paso Finos are high energy, their emotions come up very quickly and stay peaked for quite a while. Luckily they can’t run off like Thoroughbreds, their legs just move extremely quickly and that’s the feature they’ve been developed for... high energy, high stepping, smooth, kind natured. The trouble is, they can get bracey and very emotional, but because they don’t run like Thoroughbreds they don’t feel very dangerous. Question: I have a three-year-old Paso Fino filly who has been under saddle for about 8 months. She was in training for about 6 months.

I am very excited about starting up with the Parelli program as my filly is very gentle and did not always respond well to the harsh treatment of her formal training.

Can I ride her during the initial stages of the program?

(I ride with a leather jaquima which has a leather nose band (no metal reinforcement) and a leather curb and rope reins.) I use a dressage style saddle or ride bareback.

Answer: Something we need to express to you in earnest is the difference between Parelli training and more traditional techniques like the Paso Fino style of training. Parelli trains initially through disengagement and the other through engagement. Here’s the situation:

Disengagement relaxes and “loosens the spring” while engagement “tightens the spring.” This means mentally, emotionally and physically.

In our system we “unwind” the spring before we wind it up, this means when we do wind it up the horse does it with confidence, becomes more expressive and spectacular but he’s not frightened in the process.

While you could ride your horse during the initial stages of the program (of course you can, it’s not our place to say you can’t!) we would recommend you commit yourself to following the program as it is laid out, step-by-step, because it’s a recipe for success and a process of developing your horse mentally, emotionally and physically from relaxation through to engagement, not the reverse. That way you stay safe and your horse feels good about the relationship throughout the experience.

“It’s very easy to get into a fight with a horse like this...” Linda says, but a fight is the last thing on her mind. The answer lies in patience, a sense of humor, getting his attention and curiosity and most importantly, knowing how to “outsmart the smarty!”

Today I spent a half hour or so visiting with my Haflinger, Maximum. This included the catching game, grooming, picking out feet, lots of rubs and scratches, a few treats, a bit of driving from Zone 3, porcupine, yielding front and hind quarters, even putting the halter on his head. Big deal, eh? Just two weeks ago it was a much different story.

When I got Max, he was a mental wreck; didn’t like me, was terrified of ropes and carrot sticks, couldn’t accept anything I did. Catching him was a problem. If I could get baler twine around his neck, he would respect that but there was no acceptance of me or anything I did. There was a large element of escape and suspicion and if he wasn’t on line, there were no games at all. It was very frustrating. Any pressure was too much pressure. The farriar was coming soon so I began to get the horses ready by grooming them. Max wouldn’t let me get near him. I would get close, he would leave. Suddenly, he went up to the grooming spot and stopped and faced me. I thought he meant it was okay for me to halter him. Nope—gone again! A minute or two later he was back in the grooming spot looking at me.

I had a brilliant idea, “It’s not about the HALTER!” Or was it Max’s idea? I laid the halter and rope down on the feeder and picked up the brush and he let me groom him all over! I picked up his feet and when I got to the right hind, he had to leave, but, I followed him in Zone 5 again and a minute or two he was back, this time allowing me to pick up the right hind. When Max had the halter on, he had no choice—he was trapped. I decided I wouldn’t halter him again until he could accept it. When the blacksmith came, I offered Max the halter. Bingo! He actually put his nose in the halter! So, you see, it wasn’t about the halter! It was about Max’s choice. When I was cheerfully persistent, polite and ready, without force, he began to perceive me as a partner and not a predator. Wilma and her horse Max pictured above.

Having been on the Natural journey with our first horse for 12 months, my husband and I decided it was time to get our 2nd. We saw a 2-year-old pinto gelding and bought him sight unseen. He came off the float and looked for the nearest blade of grass, not fussing about where he was or all the strange predators looking at him (everyone from the stable came to see just what had we ended up with). He was incredibly thin but had a beautiful, kind eye. Tai, as we called him, adjusted to his new surroundings a breeze and we began introducing him to the 7 games. What a piece of cake! I got him through Level 1 very quickly and we were off to do an advanced Level 2 clinic with Jackie Chant, 3-Star Parelli Instructor.

The first day of the clinic we had to introduce ourselves. Tai was left brain, very curious, very confident. The first riding session was desensitizing Zone 3 in preparation of mounting bareback. Up until this day I had never seen my horse with his ears back. He made up for it this day; not only did he pin his ears back, he came at me with teeth bared & feet kicking! It scared me to death and shocked me! Here was my beautiful natured horse with an issue! Jackie came and gave me some one-on-one and told me what I needed to do. I took 6 weeks, working very hard, desensitizing him and then 6 weeks later we went to Russell Higgins clinic who is also a 3-Star Parelli Instructor. I was chosen to do the bareback mounting demo. I didn’t tell Russell about Tai’s history, it just felt right to try getting on him. I hadn’t the confidence before. Both Tai and I were happy, happy at my being able to mount! The clinic was wonderful.

Through Jackie’s advise there was huge improvement in Tai’s condition and energy. Now Tai gallops to meet me at the gate and whereas before, he would just trot, he now offers me a canter. Thank you to Jackie! Her advice was very clear and easy to follow. When people follow through on such advice, the results are amazing!! —Linsey and Tai
