Are you following the Level 1 Partnership program which tells you to rub your horse with the halter the first time or two and not put it on him right away? 2. What you will learn in the Partnership program is that it’s “not about the toys,” like the halter, it's about the relationship between you and your horse, and especially the confidence he has in you as his partner and leader. In Pocket Guide 1: Lesson 2, the lesson is to "not" catch and halter your horse before he has confidence and interest in you. This exercise builds trust and curiosity in the horse because he sees that your intentions are to act more like a partner, and less like a predator! NEW FREE Weekly Savvy Podcasts! PARELLI WORLDWIDE JUNE 8, 2007

Question: I have been reading trying to prepare myself to really start the Parelli program.

I took the halter out to put it on my horse and like any other new halter he went nuts and I could not get it on him.

What am I doing wrong, or what haven’t I done?

Frustration....

Answer: 1.

Parelli Canada

Last year, I rescued a four-year-old Canadian-Hackney cross. Looking for a way to have a good relationship with my horse we ordered Level 1 of your training kit and began work building trust and developing communication.

One day last month, he shoved his leg through a gate and needed 14 stitches to close the wound. One week later, I heard dogs barking and ran into his field and saw him being attacked by two rotweilers!! I ran to him and the dogs started to attack me! I backed up into a wood pile and grabbed a six-foot 2x4' and began to chase the dogs out of the field.

The neat thing about this story is that while I was waving the stick above my head and yelling loudly at the dogs my horse was bumping into my shoulder because he was walking right beside me. He showed me the value of Parelli training and the importance of protecting your herd of two. Thank you!

The Level 1 and 2 clinic by Kaye Thomas, 3-Star Licensed Parelli Instructor, was three days with the Level 1 in the morning and Level 2 in the afternoon. It was a pretty cool weekend and it RAINED, probably the start of rains that we hope will see the end of the drought. No one was complaining and of course we were fortunate as we were indoors.

The days worked very well as half days. It was also more affordable. There were seven horse/people partnerships in each group so we had plenty of room. Kaye is such a calm, patient instructor, it was lovely to see her again after about four years for me (the last time I saw Kaye I was pregnant!!). I have noticed a lot of changes in my 4 years absence. It is fantastic to see the developments in Natural Horsemanship, the possibilities, and what people are achieving. I was impressed with the commitment the other participants were making with their horses and how well they understood their horses. I was blown away by the knowledge and understanding of horse psychology involved in Level 2. I can't wait till Equitana and for Kaye's next visit to Unicorn Park!
